My daughter and I drove Gabby to the animal shelter about an hour away from us to meet the two male buns there to see if a love connection would be made. The very nice woman who takes care of the rabbits stayed after closing time just to let us try to match up Gabby with one of her boys.

I think she was more nervous over Gabby meeting Thumper than I was. She set up an x pen and we put the pet store cage I brought Gabby in at the entrance of it. Thumper come up and sniffed Gabby through the bars and then hopped on in the cage with her. He started grooming her hair that is molting off and he would hop in and out of the cage to see her.

After a while he humped her and Gabby didn’t move an inch, she just stayed bowed down to him. He humped her head and left a tiny poop on her forehead.  She continued to stay still and put up with him. They ran around the pen a couple of times and then both settled down in the cage laying down beside each other. So, I filled out the adoption form and we closed the cage and were on our way home with them together.

They were angels all the way home and Thumper would come up and lick my daughter’s fingers through the cage bars. I put the cage in the laundry room where Gabby’s litter box, food and water are. Gabby came into the living room to her usual lounging spot and last I peeped at him Thumper was in the litter box eating hay. If he sees me he hides behind some empty milk jugs.

The lady at the shelter said that was the easiest and quickest bonding session she’s ever seen. She was very worried about Thumper meeting any buns as he came from a home with 3 children who it sounds like traumatized him. I don’t have any pictues of him since being here but I’ll post a link to his petfinder page. There’s a cute video of him zooming around too.

Thank you for the sweet words. I’m hoping he’ll wander on in the living room in a little bit once he settles in a little bit. He’s still in the laundry room hanging out. I can’t wait to see them being together here. I’ll take pictures I promise, once I see them together in here.

So cute! I love the little tuft of hair between his ears.

For a moment, I read “adoptable” as adorable on the petfinder site. I think adorable is more accurate and better fitting!
I had a miracle bond like you did too – we were amazed.

He is super sweet already. He has come and jumped up on the couch with me 3 times to visit. He’ll let me pet him and then after a few moments jump down to explore some more. Gabby realized he was still here and they’ve been running around the living room like little race cars. I’m a big night owl so I’ll be up late making sure everyone gets along good.

Whoa. Even in her space, they are getting along?! That’s almost unheard of. You really lucked out. (Don’t ever expect it to happen that easily again… lol.)

                          Congrats!

oh, he’s darling, I love the hair-do and that single little poop in the photo. Maybe that’s his trademark.

How awesome! Apparently theirs is a match that was meant to be! Please post some pics when you get the chance.

He’s even cuter and sweeter in person. He has spent most of the day in the living room sitting on the couch with me and my daughter. He loves my daughter and has been kissing her face alot. If she calls him he comes over to her. He will come into the living room on his own and wander around some then come get on the couch.

He has a spot in the laundry room he can jump on that I made him a little bed. He loves it and it’s too high for Gabby to get to. I think it makes him feel safe. Sometimes Gabby will chase him around and then he just comes and sits on the couch for a while. I haven’t seen any biting, clawing or scuffling just the chasing. I’ve been staying out of it buy watching closely just in case it gets more serious.

Should I just continue to monitor them but let them sort it out? They have half the house to be in and plenty of room to stay away from each other if they need to.

It sounds like things are working out so I’d say just let it continue. Only when it becomes more nipping/biting/growling you should worry.

Thank you for all the sweet words, well wishes, and good advice. I watched them until late last night and Thumper finally got his nerve up to run over to Gabby first. Sometimes he will run off and sometimes he will jump over her. My husband actually saw Thumper run after Gabby this morning. I’m just glad he’s realizing he can stand up for himself too.

The way my guinea pig cage is made of the cubes and coroplast it’s two gird levels high. My husband put plywood with rollers underneath to make it easy to move and sweep under. Gabby has taken to sitting on the ply wood underneath and today I’ve noticed Thumper is in one of Gabby’s spots making himself at home. I’m glad he seems to be feeling more comfortable here. When we call him he’ll come up to us and believe it or not both him and Gabby ate some raisins out of my hand at the same time without being turd heads.

I can’t wait until he feels confident and comfortable enough to sprawl out in the middle of the living room like Gabby does. I’ve taken some pictures of him but only have one of them in the same shot as until today they would stay in separate areas.
