My male rabbit is on newspaper as a litter - I want something more asborbent but he says no. I tried swtiching him out to wood pellets but he ignored the litter box totally, no matter what I did. So, not happening. Carefresh he tolerated, but that was becoming really expensive since our pet store sells it at $20 a bag and I have to change the litter twice a day or he won’t use the box once it gets too dirty for his liking. Over night I have to stack two boxes side-by-side or the one gets too dirty (since he can only use each box twice before it’s changed, once in each far corner to avoid his paws getting soiled).
So I changed his litter last night before bed like usual and he let me know how BAD a mommy I was – I used a black and white page with a PICTURE on it, how dare I! Totally ignored the box for this offense until I switched it back from pictures to plain words.
Are any of your rabbits this finicky about their boxes? He supervises the change to make sure I put the right stuff in, if I don’t do it right, he sits there with this highly annoyed look on his face, ears flat against his head just glaring at me, then uses the floor directly outside the box to let me know he will not be touching it until I fix it to his liking. If it is to his liking, he is 100% on his litter habits. And if I put dirty litter in there to leave his scent behind, he is highly offended and considers the box spoiled until it is removed, so I can’t even use that trick for trying out new litters.
