I have a few people that I house/pet-sit for occasionally, and they pay me $25/day. (This is for houses with dogs, who require walking and letting outside, etc.) I have no idea if that’s a “typical” rate…

We’ve had neighbors and friends cat/bunny-sit for us, and usually we just thank them with gifts (wine, treats, gift certificates, etc.), but they just stop by and feed the pets (as opposed to staying at our place), and/or we return the favor and pet-sit for them when they need it.

hmmmm tough question!! When I’ve had friends/family sit, I either sit for them in return or bring gifts back for them. My own petsitter I’ve paid 12 dollars or so a visit; depending; when I had her come three times a day for meds it was close to 40/day I think and about 12 for just food/water and cleaning daily. I looked after two buns for someone as a job and was paid 300$ for two weeks to come every four days (though I went everyday because I was SO not comfortable coming that infrequently)
So it would depend if they were hired or are friends helping-can you return the favor and just bring a gift that’s unexpected? What are they doing, how often do they come and how much time do they spend? How much driving is involved for them, and how much is gasoline where you live? Are they professionals trying to make a living? Do they have pet first aid? Do you come home to find a happy bunny and no cleanign to do? All things to consider.

Around here (SF Bay Area), 20-25 per rabbit per night housed at the sitters place is what I’ve seen. House sitting would be a little less as they are not taking up any room in the sitter’s place and they are taking advantage of your house’s amenities.

You could search around locally for some professional pet sitters and see what their rates are, and base their rates and time spent with the animals to what you are asking.

I think $20 or $25 a day is plenty. My vet charges only $12 to board, so if you consider that as a baseline, it’s sensible to pay twice as much. Anything over that is just your way of contributing to your college fund. If you’re away on vacation that you’ve saved for, and you find that your expenses end up being less (Ha! If so, tell me where you went ) than you can consider a little extra bonus at the end if you can afford it, but not necessary.

I used to house sit and dog sit for a friend of my family when they would go away for vacation every year. I lived at their house for about seven days and took care of their lab and they paid me between $100-$200 for the entire week.
