Well, the 27th is finally here…

Tomorrow morning is when I take Sugarbear to get neutered and Pepper spayed.  Spoke to Dr. Harvey this morning to confirm everything.  Sugar will also be getting his teeth filed since he has a slight under-bite. I did decide to do the optional features (Vetscan and Catherization) for Pepper.

Please wish us luck. I’m so super nervous! My mom and daughter will be going too for support… Definitley looking forward to Saturday morning when I pick them up!!!

Trust me, you are in excellent hands with Dr. Harvey! She’s one of the foremost rabbit vets in the US.

I’ll be sending vibes to your babies.

I hope all goes well with your babies. Gabby made it through like a trooper and was herself just a few days later.

Thank you so much everyone! It was so hard dropping them off this morning. My 9-yr old cried all the way home (40 min)… *sigh*. It is 2:00pm right now and haven’t heard from the doctor yet. Crossing my fingers everything went well. I’ll keep you guy updated!!

LoveChaCha: they never called, so I called around 430p. They said Sugar and Pepper’s surgery went well. She had just taken their temps which was a little low, so warmed them and gave them warm SubQ Fluids. I get to pick them up tomorrow morning at 920a! CANNOT WAIT!!

                            Well, they are home…*breath*….
Both of them are doing well. They both seem out of it and just tired, but they are eating hay already so I’m happy about that! I did block off the second level of Pepper’s condo since I don’t want her moving too much. The doctor note did say to not let them groom the incision area too much…how do I prevent that?

Just keep an eye on them and distract them if they start with a noise, or attention or motion. Try to let them rest, but keep them from hiding places if it looks like one or both are going after their own incision. Some do, some don’t. You won’t know until you observe. But if one does, check to see if there is any swelling, redness or grinding of teeth which would indicate a problem starting.

When you want to check the incision site, hold up a small treat so the bunny stands, then lay a hand mirror on the floor so you can see the reflection of their belly side while standing up. That way you won’t have to wrestle with a tender area by trying to turn them over.

Yay! I must be a relief for you to have the babies home safe and sound. Bunny surgery is nerve wracking for concern bunny parents. As for chewing, it depends on the bunny, like RabbitPam said. When mine were done, it seemed like Echo didn’t even notice that she had an incision. Calypso, on the other hand, was so insistent on chewing that he came home from the vet with a cone on and it stayed on for a week. (I felt bad for him, but it was sooo funny/cute seeing his little ears sticking out of it. lol)

So the doctor gave prescribed Metacam for Pepper. On the instruction sheet, it says: NEXT DOSE, 5/28 p.m. I gave it to her last night. Is that all?
Do I need to give her another dose today? She seems OK, a little tired still, but eating her veggies (not her pellets).

Also, how long did you guys leave your bunnies in the cage after their surgeries?

                                      Thanks!

Thanks, I’m definitely thrilled to have them home!

Regarding the Metacam, you should just follow the instructions given by your doctor. If none were included, but you have more medication left after the dose last night, I would call to clarify the orders.

I kept my bunnies locked up for about a week after surgery. I was really worried that they would open their incisions by jumping on something or doing some other sort of bunny acrobatics.

My vet told me to give metacam a couple times a day as needed. She’s had a full hysterectomy, it will take more than a day to feel better, she’ll likely be wanting some more pain meds.

Keep her confined for a week or so, don’t let her climb or jump or run. Don’t want to risk hurting herself.

Momo was on it .44 ml every 12 hours for 5 to 7 days. We decided to go the full 7 days, better safe then sorry. And she had no problem with the stitches. In fact almost all the fur is back on her tummy 1 1/2 months later, except for a silly looking patch right where the incision was, and that is filling in.

Keeping her confined for a few days was the hardest part. After a couple days recovery she was absolutely stir crazy. But she is a wild woman with the climbing when let out. So it was very hard.

Pain meds can also trick a bunny into thinking they feel fine… so if let out, they might overdo the exercise, and then hurt themselves. Keep her confined for the full week.

I kept Lolli in her pen for this reason. She started binkying in her pen the next day after I brought her home. I was freaking out. “LOLLI!!! STOP!!!” LOL Luckily she was fine. But my friend’s bunny binkied and ripped her stitches open so it does happen.

Thanks! I decided to take everyone’s advice and continue to give her the medicine. Do you think I need to keep Sugar (boy) inside for a week as well? He seems so ready to come out!
