I’m trying to get an X-pen in the next week or so for Daphne, but I’m having trouble deciding whether to go for one with a walk-thru door or not…Here’s the dilemna:

She currently lives in her petstore cage at night and if I’m gone at all during the day and the roommate isn’t home or in the mood to keep an eye on her.  I’ll be going out of town for 2 consecutive weeks in June without the bunny (she’ll be getting bunny-sat by 2 different people, depending on the week) so I want to make sure she has “some” space to hop around in since I doubt either of her bunny-sitters will be quite the slave that I am to her need for free running time (i.e. she spends all her time out of her cage when I’m home).

Since she’s currently not potty-trained with the X-pen concept (she is pretty much trained with her corner litter box in her cage now), I’m a little worried about making a transition to complete X-pen living sans pet-store cage, especially since I’m currently studying for a giant med school test for the next month (the type of test that lasts all day and determines your future in medicine) so I don’t have the time to make that transition til I get back from my 2-week vacation.

Initially, I was thinking one with a door would be lovely (esp after seeing many of your pictures), until I realized that I wouldn’t be able to attach the Pen to her cage as easily since it appears that the door replaces the “open ends” of a non-door pen?  Is this the case?  I would like to just attach the X-pen to her cage for the time being until I move in July where I’ll probably dump the petstore cage.  Might it be possible to attach one with a door to her cage?  maybe just improvise a connection with NIC cubes?

I hope my post made some sense and that you guys can help me out, yet again, with some great advice!!

I would get the one with the door. It’s so much easier. All of the panels can be taken out so the panel with the door can be moved. When you get your xpen, there will be 7 panels and then 1 panel with the door, but you can configure it to be 2 panels, door, and then another 5 panels (does that even make sense???). You will see what I mean when you get it. You can still have the door with a cage attached as well.
Are you taking the MCAT’s? Good luck!! I hated even looking through that darn practice book…

I’m a little confused, I have one with a door but it still has open ends, just the last panel has a door in it. I have this one
            http://www.petco.com/product/5874/Precision-Pet-Eight-Panel-Wire-Pens.aspx

but it doesn’t have to be connected, which I think is what your asking? It can be just a long straight fence, or as I have it, makes a L shape and each end is on a different wall…

Definitely get one with a door. The higher the better too! Don’t go for the 24″ ones, waste of money. Buns can easily jump over them. Go for 36″ and higher, with a door. Easier for cleaning and for hopping in to hang with the buns

The panels are movable, so don’t worry about initial door placement

Thanks for both of your quick responses! I literally just ordered one from Petco!! After some more googling, the Petco one had a picture that clearly demonstrated that I could have the open ends, just one had a door in it (just like you said, OneTwoThree), plus they have some crazy 50% off sale going on for X-pens.

Also, @Tate: no, not the MCAT (thank goodness), but USMLE Step 1 (which I’m learning is worse than the MCAT). I just finished second year, so now I’m trying to prove that I learned something the last two years before I hit rotations

Good luck on the USMLE! Scary, but so exciting to be going through that process!

Well, the pens come together with these little clip things and to be honest, that how I open and close mine always – I never ever use the doors. Just unclip the clips and voila, instant door.

Mine has a door and I like it. I unclip it and open it up completely for them to come and go, but when it’s closed up it’s nice to be able to slip in through the door to do something (and it’s harder for Hannah to escape since I can block her from the door, but it would be harder if I unclipped the whole thing)
