My Foster bunny Zeke has developed a huge and nasty looking abscess in his right eye. He has an appointment on Friday to have the eye removed by Dr. Harvey at Chabot. Dr. Harvey thinks the abscess was caused by EC, though he also had a Pasteurella infection a while ago, which could also be the cause. The infection has not responded to antibiotics and the eye is clearly causing him discomfort, and he appears to have already lost sight in that eye due to a huge cataract that has formed. We think removing the eye is the best thing for him long term.
Some of you old timers may remember that I have a one eyed bunny, Deanna, who lost her eye to an infection at a very young age. I know Zeke will be better off after the surgery, but I still worry about the procedure. He could not have a better surgeon than Dr. Harvey, so I know he is in capable hands. I will keep everyone who is interested updated on his progress.
Aw poor Zeke – huge healing vibes to him – he’s adorable. He’s in the best hand with Dr. Harvey that’s for sure!
I agree he is in great hands with Dr. Harvey, and he’s lucky to have you as his Foster Slave.
Healing vibes!!

Hope it all goes well, Osprey. Nice to hear from you. Agree about Dr. Harvey.

Wow, he’s like Petzy’s Neigey! He’s beautiful! Sending many {{{vibes}}} that the operation and recovery goes well.
Keep us posted.
Zeke came through the surgery OK. He will be spending the night at Chabot, I will pick him up tomorrow morning.
So glad the procedure has been completed and he is recovering comfortably. HEALING VIBES TO ZEKE.
Healing vibes to Zeke. Please keep us updated on his recovery.
Zeke is back home with us now. His recovery is going *great*, eating well, still the super cuddly guy he was before the surgery. He has a bit of the Phantom of the opera look, his face is half shaved. The scar from the surgical site is pretty nasty looking, he will see Dr. Harvey again in a couple of weeks to have the stitches removed. He tested positive for EC, so it is likely that EC cause the abscess. We’ll know soon.

Thanks for the updates Osprey. From the picture the site does not look bad at all! Though, in real life I’m certain it looks different. It’s amazing how quickly they heal from enucleation surgery.
Great to hear he’s acting his normal bunny self! I hope he adjusts well. More (((vibes))) for the little guy.
Zeke is such an adorable bunny! Look at that face….and cuddly too? Oye sweet. He is lucky to have you taking such good care of him. How is he adjusting to having no eye on that side. Does he try to scratch at it?
I know you said you will know soon whether the eye abscess was e.c related, so does that mean they are testing the abscess they took out? And if it is related to e.c. what is different about the eye abscess that clues them in to that?
Keep us updated.
Continued healing vibes.
Zeke’s titer came back mid positive for EC, so he will start EC treatment as soon as he recovers from his surgery. If the abscess was EC related, nothing further will have to be done. If the abscess was from some other infection, he may require more antibiotics to be sure the infection doesn’t spread.
The eye will be biopsied to determine what caused it. The lab can somehow tell if the EC caused the abscess, and we should know in a week or so if that is what happened.
He continues to heal well. The fur is growing back on his bald spot, and I think he can come off of cage rest tomorrow and get a little exploring time.
Continued vibes to Zeke – thank you for the update.
We have a one eyed bun at Save A BUnny called Whiskey. He looked a mess after his surgery but now you would have to know he was missing an eye to notice else you’d just think he was doing a loooooong blink.
*Hugs and vibes*
Zeke had his stitches removed last Friday. The tech said the wound is healing nicely, and more fur has grown back. We are now giving him the EC medicine (Albendizole I think it is) for a few weeks and then he should be ready to find a home of his own.
I am glad he is doing well
Give him snuggles for me!
Zeke was adopted! … by me 🙂
Another case of Failed Foster Syndrome, we just couldn’t let him go. We are trying to bond him with our trio, it was going OK for a while, then Curly Sue and Zeke got into a big fight and we called it off for a while. I’ll probably try again soon.
A fantastic outcome for Zeke
Congrats! I like to read of these happy endings so thanks for popping by to update on him.
Healing vibes for Zeke…glad it’s turning out so well for him. Good luck integrating him with your trio.
