I’m doing some bonding work with my boys and I have a question: Is it a good idea to do sessions in as many different areas as possible to make sure they become okay with each other in every situation or stick mostly to one place if it’s working good?

I was doing bathroom sessions and things were going pretty well, we had got to a point where there was no humping and less biting and chasing. I decided to do a session in the basement to see how they would react in an area about the same size and the humping started all over again which made Stormy very aggressive.

        Any thoughts on this?

My bonding knowledge is not from direct experience, but my thought is that the bathroom is quite neutral and is best to continue to use for bonding progress. The problem with new turf is that is may be a distraction and lead to turf wars, ie. aggression regarding whose place it is. If you continue to stay neutral until they are better acquainted, or until one is established as the dominant one, they will be more focused on each other. I’m surprised one didn’t whiz in the basement to claim it.

I didn’t say there was no whizzing!! But Bindi usually pees in the bathroom too because I don’t have a litter box that is neutral, I just put towels down. Not sure if it’s a “claiming” thing or that he just has to pee.

The way I did it was to work in just one space until they were fine, then move to another one. When I moved from the tub to the hallway there was definitely an increase in humping again, but it settled down much faster than it had in the tub as they got used to the new area. After they were up to 4-5 hours in the hallway, I moved them to a cage downstairs – there weren’t any neutral areas on the first floor, so I figured it was time they move in together. I tried to make the cage as neutral as possible though (put it in a different area, changed the stuff around, etc)

My basic philosophy was to do one thing until they were so calm together that it was boring. If I felt I could read a book while they were in the bathtub and I didn’t need to stress them, then it was time to move on somewhere else. Once I was bored with them in the hallway, it was time to move them in together. If they are still having issues in the bathroom I wouldn’t change locations yet, but eventually it’s a good idea to move them around and get them ok together in different areas.

Another thing I learned the hard way is to bond at different times of day. I did it every afternoon, which is when they are most subdued. It was good for the initial bonding, but they had some issues when they moved in together and Hannah got bossy in the early morning. Not that I would’ve done a bonding session at 5am, but I definitely should’ve done one later at night and fed them dinner together.

I moved to early and it caused a fight so make sure ( like Elrohwen said) to wait until it is boring and nothing bad is happening. Before you move to a different place I would try doing bonding at different times of the day like Elrohwen said because I know Mocha loved to chase Lulu at 10pm-12pm.

Thanks guys. I’m going to work only in the basement for now. They’ve settled down some. I prefer using the basement because I can leave the area set up whereas in the bathroom I had to set it up every time I wanted to do a session, which was a pain in the butt. I’m going to post some pics this weekend.

I was wondering about this too. I mean, a new space is certainly neutral…until they realize they are going to the same space every day for a certain period of time and then it begins to become familiar…then it’s no longer neutral…right? Or am I only confusing things?

LPT,has Bindi had his teeth filed yet? I personally fear putting my buns together as long as one or another has a medical issue going on (of course, for Mimz & Fiver, the medical issues are seemingly never ending), wouldn’t this cause more stress, hence perhaps more grumbling and aggression between bonding bunnies?

Good to hear though that Bindi and Stormy are actually enjoying at least one space and time together! That’s champion! I wish I had a basement room to place my bonding area; if I use the loo it has to be the tub and that wants cleaning every day before I even think of setting them there!

I am calling this morning to set up Bindi’s appointment for next week or the one after. Bindi is not aggressive with Stormy so I’m not too worried. Stormy’s the biter. Although no matter how well things are progressing with the bonding, I won’t even try “cementing” until Bindi has completely recovered because I don’t want him to have any added stress until his recovery, so they will get a bit of time off of bonding during Bindi’s recuperation. Just going to continue doing one hour or more sessions every day until then and see how things go.
