  What seems to be the average cost near you for neutering?
  
  I adopted a new rabbit yesterday, my little netherland dwarf girl Daphne has been in need of a friend. Well I saw an ad on craigslist for a free bunny, so I emailed and they said I could come pick her up. They seemed to try to be caring for the bunny well, but just didn’t know too much. ‘She’ was in a small bird cage in their garage but I got the bunny and brought ‘her’ home. When she is actually a he. I orginally named her Velma but now he is Fred. I don’t have it in me to give him away so I decided I will have to gather some food money (I’m a college student) and go get him neutered. There is a low cost clinic in town that said they would do it for $40 but I’m afraid that it won’t be a quality place to take him, I have read both good reviews and then bad reviews where the dogs have died. Another place I called said it would be $254, which I cannot afford at the moment. And a third place I was reccommended to from a rabbit rescue is $105, so I made an appointment for Thursday. Does this seem like a normal price? I know I need to get it done as soon as possible, Daphne is kind of terrified of him as he thumps around and runs up and down the side of the cage.

  $105 sounds like a reasonable price for a neuter through a vet. Is Daphne spayed? Are you keeping them together?

  In my area, the costs vary greatly as well. Also costs seem to vary greatly from one part of the US to another.
  
  I think you need to find out what the costs include – does it include bloodwork, pain meds, etc…that way you can make a better decision.

  Honestly, the price varies so much across the country that it’s hard to say. I’ve heard of people paying $75, then I paid $400 (for a neuter, spay is probably more). It can get up there in expensive areas.
  
  I would say anything under $200 is quite a deal.

  Definitely find out what the costs include because you’ll have a better idea then. When we got our bunny in February we didn’t know her sex, so we got estimates for neutering as well as spaying. I live in central NY, where costs for a lot of things are pretty high. The most affordable, but fortunately also the best place nearby, said it would be $150 for a neuter. Turns out we had a female and had to pay significantly more, but everything was included in the quoted price. There were no surprises when we went to pay our bill. Good luck!

  Take them to your local humane society or shelter. Usually they will do the procedure cheaper than vets. Although they may not be knowledgable regarding the general care, I believe they should be trustworthy for the procedure since they usuallly conducted it on all the unaltered animals that go there. They are usually pretty honest about what they can and can’t do, at least the ones I’ve been to have been.

  $150 seems to be the magic number around here, although I ended up paying $65 for each of my boys (it was $80 for a spay). The only lower price I found I think was $40 at a humane society.
  I’m not sure how I would feel about allowing a vet without a lot of experience with rabbits neuter or spay my bun. My vet sees pretty much everything- from dogs and cats to small animals to reptiles, but he specialized in small animals. His price was low because he was really quite experienced. Can you ask the cheap vet how many times they have done rabbits? And what the mortality rate was? Mortality should be just about 0, so if it’s not… move on.

  i’m paying $100 to have pupet neutered on the 16th. when i called around, i was quoted anywhere from $75 to $293. while i would have really liked to have gone with the cheapest vet, i chose one with several rabbit clients. he’s not a specialist, or the most experienced, but i cannot afford $293, and had to choose something more in my price range.

  I just had Gabby spayed under 3 weeks ago and the spay cost was $155 and since she had never been to the vet before I adopted her I chose the optional $85 for blood work on her.

  I believe it covers everything. The rescue that reccomended them has a whole webpage on the importance of fixing rabbits and how they need pain medication and all. They said he is the only vet in town they would trust their rabbits with.
  
  He is very frantic I have him in a pen made of the NIC panels, he isn’t scared or anything but he is digging and biting the cage and running in circles. I’m not sure if it is because he can smell Daphne (they are in seperate pens right now, she isn’t spayed) or what. But he has dumped all of his bowls, I put vinyl on the floor under his cage and it tore it all up. I’m hope after his appointment Thursday that he will calm down.

  I would suggest saving up to spay your little girl too. You can’t bond an unspayed bunny, she will be too territorial and aggressive. ANd its better for her health regardless, she has a far too high of a chance of getting uterine cancer.

  One vet I called charged 240, another charges 160, I’m going with the 160 as it is a vet recommended by the Rabbit.org site.

  Ditto all-it varies from area to area, and from place to place. My vet is higher medium for my area but includes pre surgery bloodwork, and one-on-one while they are waking and I very much trust them.
  
  The vet clinic having such a stunning recomendation from a rabbit rescue (the one you are booked into) sounds good to me.
  
  And sounds like new bun is frantic to check out his new digs It would be good if you can give him some out time to run and play before surgery so that he is comfortable in his new home during recovery

  The original vet I bought my bunnies too wanted close to $1000 for spay and neuter!!! So this Friday I will take them to see another doctor. I called and the prices seem a lot more reasonable. The only bad thing is I’ll have to pay for another check up appt.

  To get Momo spayed was $180, included a short stay and her meds to go home. But I had to have a pre-op exam and fecal done first to make sure she was healthy and ready. This was also at a vet clinic that specializes in exotics near the Detroit area.

  I emailed the low cost spay/neuter clinic back and asked their mortality rate and she said it is 1% and the national average among vet clinics is 2-3%. I figured I could probably get daphne done right now too if I go there, but I’m still nervous.

  $1000?? Oh my. And here I thought $450 was expensive for a spay.
