  We took the dog over to the park by our house today. We went down by the little creek that runs through the park and we saw 5 male mallards swimming around. Then we looked over in the taller grass and we saw the backside of a female disappearing and about 8 little ducklings disappearing behind her! They were so freaking cute!!!! I want to go back tomorrow with the camera to try to get pictures. I’m worried since there are a lot of cats around, plus little kids play in the creek as well. Hopefully no one tries to catch themselves a baby duck.

  I will try to get some tomorrow! I have to remember to charge the batteries though. Probably need the tele lens too, that mama duck was pretty wary of us.

  Woww that’s a lot of little duckies! Do they usually have that many babies? For some reason I can’t imagine a female duck fitting over 12 eggs at once, lol.

  Average clutch size is 8 to 13 eggs. However, some Mallard mothers have been known to be nest parasites by laying their eggs in another Mallard’s nest. So sometimes a mama duck will have more babies than eggs that she laid.

  Well, it has been a few days so we decided it was time to go check on our little duckies. I’m happy to report that we still counted 12 little babies, so nobody has gotten eaten yet. Phew!
