        Hello,

I have now had my rabbit, Walter, for over a month and he is doing absolutely great.  He is really starting to explore my place and even spent the other day entirely out of his cage.  He was doing so well that my girlfriend and I decided to see how he and her cat responded.  While the cat was mostly nonplussed, Walter was estatic.  After a period of watching and waiting, he finally got the guts to go check out the weird looking “bunny. “  After that went well, whenever he got done playing, he would go see what the cat was doing.

Anyway, my point is that Walter seemed to very much enjoy having another animal around.  I have always intended to gett him a bunny pal.  So, I would like opinions on timeframe.  How long should have wait to get another pet?  He has only been with me a month after all.  Should I work on our own bonding more first?

        Thanks

        Rob

Hi Rob, welcome. Is Walter neutered yet? If not, then you definitely want to do that first before getting another rabbit.

Yes.  He is neutered.  He lived in a shelter his whole life and is 2 yrs, 4 months old.  Probably should have mentioned that.

I bet he is very happy to have a forever home then! I think in that case, it’s truly up to you to decide when you feel the time is perfect. Walter is probably though just settling in and getting used to his surroundings and this might be a good time for you to bond with him and find out his personality.

Thank you for adopting him too.

I think it’s really up to you. Something to think about is that often bunnies with a friend spend more time lounging with their new friend rather than exploring and hanging out with you. I love having a pair, but I’m also very glad that I had Otto for a year before I got him a friend.

I would spend some more time bonding with him yourself and getting to know him – then get him a friend later.

I preferred having my first rabbit because he acted more of an ally to me when I got my second rabbit, Annabelle. (Boy and girl pair, they’re both neutered). Oskar was so comfortable around me that Annabelle began to believe that maybe I was okay (came from a hoarding situation then moved around from shelter to shelter with limited space and interaction with humans). Oskar was there to help her come out of her shell. I had Oskar for about five months before I got Annabelle but now they’re bonded and pretty much together all the time but I know if I didn’t spend time with Oskar bonding and getting my second rabbit to like me would be harder.

I’ve had my bunny for almost a year now and I feel very bonded with her, like she is my actual friend lol! I have also been thinking about getting another bun since I’m at school a lot of the time but I feel like I might not connect with this new bunny like I’ve connected with thumper. If that makes sense :S

Hmm, I am not really sure how I got two accounts. This is the one I will use though. Is the other related to the store site?

Anyway, thanks for the anecdotes. I am definitely going to wait some time. Walter and I are getting along great but I feel we have much more to “accomplish” before we add another in the mix.

I preferred having one-on-one time with my first rabbit for awhile. At 2 years old, he is still young and you have time to get a companion later this year or even next year. You might want to keep some areas of your house off-limits so there will be neutral areas left for bonding sessions later on. Would you be taking him “bunny-dating” when you start looking for a rabbit?

I would wait and get to know your bunny a bit more. There’s also a chance that he wont like the companion, and you’ll have to have enough room and time to keep them separated.

                            beka,

Walter will definitely be going to the shelter with me so he can pick out his own friend. I am not bringing anyone home unmet.
