It was a semi-sunny day in Washington and I had to get to work at 3 pm…
I got to the parking lot of the grocer that I work at and saw a navy blue van, with a neon green sign posted on the grass in front of it: MALTESE PUPPIES FOR SALE
![]()
I took a peek into the van and the guy looked shady… and I felt so angry, disturbed and digusted ![]()
I went into the employee door, and I didn’t see the director in her office. So I went to HR office and told the HR lady about what I saw and she phoned someone to get on the issue.
![]()
Why do people do this? It disgusts me that people just want to make a profit off of animals and not give a crap, and have more litters and sell the babies ![]()
I heard from other people that this happens .. someone was selling cats in front of the store
.. IF this happens again, I will call animal control. This is sad ![]()
That is so sad. I am not against proper, responsible breeding, but backyard breeders and puppymills… oh how I hate them!
LoveChaCha, do you read the Seattle area Craigslist? It’s been such a big issue lately! There has been one breeder in particular that people are attacking for doing this and he’s also selling his dogs with PARVO! He supposedly charges an arm and a leg for them too. :\ It’s terrible, to put it mildly.
When we ate at a local restaurant a couple weeks back there was a van with a sign on the side for pure bred puppies they were selling. Made me sick to my stomach.

Is it on the news?
Do you live in WA too? I have not heard of this.
I really wish that people wouldn’t do this. But people don’t always do it the right way ![]()
I don’t have the right to judge them, but the way that they did it, showed me that they do not care about their animals.
With so many animals needing homes at the shelters, anyone who breeds for any reason should have their heads examined. Honestly, is it really worth it? Every time I see one of those commercials about abandoned pets it makes me sick to my stomach.
My daughter still wants a dog, despite us trying to get Jenna for her and having that not work out. But she feels the need to have a dog for companion/protection when she moves out on her own. (Not that this will happen anytime soon either, but…) She talks often about getting a purebred dog. I keep telling her if she wants to have a dog, she needs to mature, for one, and find one at a shelter, for another.
We have folks up here breeding and selling dogs like dachshunds and Maltese and I feel bad enough about having to take Jenna out for potties all winter long…why do people think it’s a good idea to breed small dogs in snowy places?
Just go for the cute factor and to heck with the consequences as long as there’s cash in pocket I suppose. Sheesh. ![]()
It’s not on the news that I’m aware of, I just look on the pet section of Craigslist often. I do live in Washington, I was near Redmond in high school, Bellingham for 3 years of college, and now finishing up in Pullman.
Some people genuinely care about the animals that they breed, but it seems few and far between! Selling pets in a parking lot is just asking for trouble. I’m surprised there isn’t some law about it. Dangerous all around. :\
The thing is there are so many purebreed dogs in shelters too. You just have to keep an eye out or be in contact with a breed specific rescue. No reason to pay top dollar with a breeder when you can adopt one.
My mom’s pomeranian mix dog died over a year ago and she was so upset. She decided she wanted another pomeranian since she loved Phoebe so much. I spent so much time looking on petfinder and craigslist and calling and emailing her with the ones that sounded like what she wanted. None were “what she was looking for” for one reason or another. She ended up paying a fortune for a “pure breed” pomeranian from a breeder. It broke my heart she did that after she knows how much it means to me to adopt your pets, especially dogs and cats.
Some are so set on one type of breed.. it kills me! There is nothing wrong with a mixed breed! I don’t mind them at all! I think they are beautiful..
Tate! That is awesome! I live about 20 mins south of Seattle, in Federal Way!! Crazy
I avoid CL.. it makes me ill to my stomach.
That’s horrible. Makes me so angry and I wasn’t even there. I assume there are no laws regarding this? I can’t imagine there are in Canada, seeing as though our archaic laws still consider animals as “property”. I actually attended a peaceful protest this weekend to change this law (it was also a vigil for the 100 sled dogs massacred a year ago in Whistler). Let’s hope it does some good.
It’s always so sad to see that. Waco has passed an ordinance prohibiting people selling animals on parking lots, etc but it doesn’t extend out here to West. West has a woman who has bred her two little Yorkies nearly to death and when she puts her flyers up all over town, I’ll put another one under it about adopting from the Waco shelter.( Mine get ripped down a lot)
Her grandson is the one that found Charlie last year and brought him to me. They wanted him back to have at their garage sale in case the owner showed up, but when I realized who she was I went down and got him back and left a photo of him instead, I was afraid she’d hand the little guy over to the first person with a few dollars, and in West, that could mean he would be dinner.
I see this every weekend on the main streets of town. I agree, its horrible! I dont understand how this isnt illegal. You cant stand out there with an unwanted baby, letting it bake in a cage all day in the back of a truck, with a sign saying $500 AKA HUMAN FOR SALE! Why can you do this with an animal?
its unfortunate, but i think that if someone is out of a job for a while, they will end up setting aside their own ethics when it comes to being able to provide for their family. if they were selling puppies out of an escalade, then i’d certainly think to my self “Fing animal exploiting ahole”, but until its actually outlawed, there will always be people who resort to income means that that they would not otherwise be considering. i mean,, what percentage of people do you think actually would say they ‘love’ their job.
and in West, that could mean he would be dinner.
People eat dog???

Quite honestly, I have a suspicion that most of these people don’t even have an ethical problem with what they’re doing, financial stress or not.

Ditto.
I think selling animals out of a van is awful but I think a lot of backyard breeders who list on Kijiji/Craigslist are no better. The only difference is you go to their house.
