I was just wondering, one of my friends that is way up north has an american fuzzy lop (male) bunny and it is about 7 moths old. My bunny we think is a Vlveteen rex, and my looking at it’s private having the 2 blood vessels I belive it is a female.. so out of these 2, which do you think would make a better pet.

I heard males tend to be a bit mean when they are ready to breed.

Both males and females make great pets – I have had both, and there is not very much difference at all in caring for them. Both male bunnies and female bunnies are great! However, they can both get “mean” when they become mature – that is why it is important for them to be spayed and neutered.

Are you planning to breed your rabbit?

I agree with peppypoo – I would not say any particular gender or breed makes a better pet rabbit than another.

Spaying and neutering will help any rabbit, male or female, a better pet.

Discussion of intentional breeding is not allowed on the site. We advocate keeping rabbits indoors as house pets, and this is best accomplished thru spaying and neutering.

Usually the larger the breed, the more calm the rabbit. This isn’t always true, mind you but as a general note, it works.

I know bunnies get temper around breeding time. And the males tend to be a bit worse, but at what age does this happen so I can prevent it in time.

Males usually 3 1/2 to 4 months and females 6 months. Those are the ages when you want to get them altered.

You will see the signs when they mature.
I dont know first hand about males.
Huckleberry is a female. She was a sweet curious little bun that would run up and bump our ankles when we would come in the room. She started to grow more territorial. She started charging us, snorting and “boxing” (which is exactly what is sounds like, she put up her dukes and started trying to hit me). She began tearing out the fur on her chest and putting it in her cage. The worst of it was that she was digging at the carpet. She tore up a lot of the carpet around the edges of the room she was in.
You may be able to prevent that kind of damage to your home since you are aware and you will be looking for the signs. I wasn’t at the time. You can also prevent it by making sure your home is well bunny proofed.

apparently, mine didn’t get this memo!  tiny little rue is the mellow, laid back one.  giant nut puppet is crazy and never still!  as i type, he is doing mad zoomies from one end of the house to the other!    it just proves, there are exceptions to every rule!

in my opinion, the rabbit that makes the best pet is a FIXED one!!!!!! i have both a male flemmie mix and a female mini rex. aside from him being more calm and friendly (just his breed) she has really come around and is getting to be better with being petted and fussed over but the bottom line, an altered, indoor bunny makes the best pet
