I just saved a Californian baby bun from ending up on someone table. I introduced him to Baxter who is a little over a year old now. He is calm & gentle. I want to bond them. Should I let them bond only with close supervision until the little one is spayed/neutered? I think it is a buck but not sure.

I should add that they were together today in the xpen I set up for Baxter. They sniffed and groomed eachother. Baxter chased a little but not too much. We just moved into another house and Baxter isn’t used to being confined. I didn’t want to let him out of the pen because I don’t want him claiming the room just yet. He is scent marking like crazy though. My house smells like skunky bunny poop. He did that when we got our cat but it didn’t last long. Am I doing things right so far?

I would just keep them separate until the baby is neutered. If he suddenly gets hormonal and lashes out, things could go poorly for the bond. Males can be neutered pretty young, so it shouldn’t be too long to wait. Baxter’s behavior towards him may also change as the baby gets hormonal and starts to smell differently.

Congrats on rescuing a new bun! I’d love some pics.

I agree, definitely wait. You don’t want to put stress on their relationship now and prevent bonding later on.

Be careful having them together straight away. If this rabbit was from a bad environment, I’d advise getting the baby vet checked so you can be certain there’s nothing that can be transferred to Baxter (coccodia, fleas, mites etc). Also, it would be stressful on the little rabbit if it is sick at all.

If all is well in that department, socialising them would not be a bad idea. But any work on a long lasting bond is better to do after the baby bun is fixed.
I would love to see some pics too! A baby Californian! We haven’t seen pictures of Baxter in a long time either How big is he now?

Thanks for the replies! I haven’t been on for a few days to check so I’m sorry I did not reply. However, I wish I would have! I had the baby in the playroom any it squeezed through the gate and Baxter chased him & tried to attack him! They are both ok but it really scared me! No more of that! As far as healthy baby, he is good and very social with me! He climbs in my lap every chance he gets. Just like my Baxter did! We don’t know exactly how old he is. He us bigger than Bax was when we got him so we are all thinking around 12 weeks. So one more month and I can schedule his blood work and neuter! I will submit pics soon! I’m on an iPhone and dnt know how to post pics from it yet. Bax is around 10 lbs now
