So I need a new cage for Smokey for when she’s at work since she’s grown out of the one I’ve had there since she was a baby first there. The teacher in her class agreed with me that a standing cage would be a great asset, since the kids will be able to see her, they can move the cage around, easier to take her out of the cage and plus she’ll have more room.
The problem is, not only are they all $100+, but I am unsure of any of these standing cages from Petsmart. I was wondering if any of you have any of these cages, or have had experience with any of them, to let me know what would be best. Keep in mind – Smokey is at school Monday through Thursday from 8:30am to 4:30pm.
Petsmart is the cheapest. I saw one from Drs. Foster and Smith similiar to this, but it’s catalog on (so no product reviews) and it’s $200 for the size I want ;/
Also be aware that I would be taking the grates out of any of the 3 cages I’m posting, so no worries there. Can’t have her getting sore hocks
And I can’t put carpet squares down because she pulls up long carpet, the brat.

I’m not too keen on the third one, but the first two seem alright. Let me know what you think. Luckily, Petsmart is having a sale and doing a shipping deal with orders over $60 : ![]()
I’m not much help with opinions on the cages but I did want to let you know that I have had a cage made by Super Pet before. It was for my first rabbit (a long tome ago) I got him a 3 level 3’x3′ rabbit cage. It held up really well. So, I would trust the that brand.
The 2nd one comes in the largest size of all of the3, if you get the extra large one. That would be fine for her during school hours i think ![]()
I would go with the biggest one… I am not too crazy about the flooring either, I am glad you will be taking those out.
Have you checked out craigslist? or freecycle.org? You may be able to find a large hutch there for much less or even possibly free.
I would also keep in mind dog kennels. Sometimes you can find large ones for the same price as a bunny hutch but they are much bigger. You can attach some wheels to a piece of plywood to set it on so that it can still be moved but will have less chance of her hurting herself if she wiggles free when they take her out. There is also less chance of it tipping over. Im not sure how old the kids are in the class but kids can be very clumsy so a cage lower to the ground might be wise.
I cannot get a hutch, since it’s at a preschool. The wood is not a good thing for children or germs.
The children are 4 and 5 years old, they are a preschool class. The teacher and aide in the room always know what’s going on. I would never let my rabbit be somewhere where she wasn’t being supervised. I have mentioned this before, but Sue teaches them the right way to pet her, and also teaches them patience and how much work a rabbit is. Their playtime is always supervised and there is no more than 10 students in the class at a time, so no worries about Smokey and her care at school.
The large and xlarge are only different by a matter of 2 inches of length, but they cost $20 for 2 inches. So the large would be just fine for her, since she’s a 3lb dwarf and has a double level condo at home. She also gets to jump around the rug at least once during the schoolday while the children sit around the edge of the rug indian-style and Sue sits in the middle, and they patiently wait for Smokey to come to them. She likes to do binkies because it makes them giggle, which makes the little ham do more haha
The reason why I made this post was to see what was the best quality of cage. I have read reviews of other cages with stands that rabbits have been able to chew through and then fall down and whatnot. I was hoping someone on here had experience with any of these types of cages. ![]()
Hey Smokey, I’ve heard of a type of cage called “Marchioro” Some of the cages do get really huge:
http://www.thefind.com/pets/browse-Marchioro-Rabbit-Cage
Also be aware that I would be taking the grates out
The only thing I would worry about taking the grids out would be that the plastic wouldn’t be strong enough to hold a rabbit if the grid isn’t made to come out. But maybe sense she is little it wouldn’t matter.
Lizzy — if you didn’t read my whole post, I mentioned some cages being over $200. If I wanted to spend another $200, I would buy her the 2-level condo I had made for her. But for a cage that is just used for 4 days a week for 8 hours, I am not spending over $150 on a cage. Despite working at a school, I make $7.35/hr. ;(
Mocha — the cage is supported by the frame with wheels, if you can’t tell
And she’s only 3 lbs. She poops more than she weighs most of the time haha
I would definitely get the biggest one. I have a super pet cage (not one of those – it’s the extra large one that sits on the ground and has a plastic bottom). I keep it attached to a pen, but it’s quite a nice cage and is 2’x4′ (which I think should be the minimum). I think the cage was less than $100 and you can put it on a table if you need to keep it up off the ground.
Here’s a link to the cage I have:
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753350
I took the shelf out because it took up too much room with both rabbits and I was afraid Hannah’s big butt would break it. Hahaha. Otto did enjoy sitting up there when it was all his. I left the wheels off too, but they could be useful in your situation.
I had looked at that cage before, but it is too long for the table she is on. Plus, Sue would like the use of the table back and really liked the idea of the standing cage. I am pretty set on getting a standing cage, just not too happy about the price ;(
I wish I could use the one you linked me to and find a stand that is cheap that would fix it. And CraigsList is no help either. And I checked North & South NJ as well as Philly since I’m close. No luck with anything good, reasonable, or trustworthy ;(
Marchioro makes very nice, sturdy cages. I have used the XL one in the past. It is 2×4 feet and costs between $80 and $120. Keep in mind that there needs to space for a litterbox and hay in any cage you get. Some of the smaller ones don’t allow enough room.
Yes I know : ) Like I said, she has a cage already at school but I would just like to upgrade. The Machioro ones a previous forum user on here linked me to were about $200. I cannot afford that ;( Which is why I was looking at Super Pet and whatnot from Petsmart.
Where did you purchase the XL Machioro cage for that cheap? I only have Petsmart and Petco in my areas and since I’m in NJ, everything is expensive because they want to make the residents dirt poor ;D
I had looked at this cage a year or so ago, and was pretty determined to buy it —
But the price and some of the not so great reviews I read turned me off. Some people said their rabbits fell through the bottom of the cage because it wasn’t made right. So I bought her a 2-level handmade condo instead ;D
Something like this, and the others I posted, would be great for work and would fit perfectly in the space Sue has in mind. I’m just trying to bargain shop because $200 is a little high, even though I’m getting the feeling I’m not going to have a lot of luck finding it any cheaper ;(
The one in that link is not the same one I had.

This site has link of where it’s available. http://www.guineapigcages.com/petstorecages.htm
I purchased it some years back, but IMO, it is still affordable for the size and quality.
(And when you google image the model, it actually brings up a pic of MY house… lol!)
I just reread that you were interested in a cage with a stand. In that case, yes, you pay a premium ($75-100) JUST for some wire and casters. If the cage must be movable, you can get a plank of wood for a platform and place casters on the bottom. Or if you’d prefer elevation, you can get two of those plastic Sterilite stacked drawers and place the cage on top…. and have an ADDED BONUS of tons of storage space underneath! I bet you can get an entire set-up for $150, and it will be more useful than pre-made stands.
If you can’t find a cage you like with a stand, can you buy a cheap table from Goodwill or Craigslist? Just give it a nice coat of paint and set the cage on it.
Beka — I didn’t even think of using those wide 2-drawer storage things with a large cage on top, hmm… Would the weight of the cage + Smokey be too much for the plastic, though?
And I think I’m going to stick with the Prevue cage. I read through a lot of pages of reviews and the Super Pet one’s plastic apparently doesn’t work too well, but the Prevue has high reviews and is the same price, basically.
I just have to say, I love how we go through all of these things for our rabbits haha. Like searching around for days and reading hours of reviews just to make sure it’s safe for the little diva haha
In any case, I am getting the one that you all suggested ;
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753643&clickid=cart
And again, I hate wire-bottom cages so I will be taking the grates out. People with multiple guinea pigs have done it and shown pictures and it works great. You have to attach the grate anyway, so I just will assemble the cage without it. If I feel the plastic is a bit unsafe, I can always reinforce, but she’s little so it shouldn’t be too much of a hassle.
Thanks for all your help and hopefully this cage will be worth all of this fuss haha
I have a plastic drawer storage thing that I pile alot of my jewelry stuff on, my little anvil, a metal block, tons of metal wire… all of which adds up to much more than smokey
You can always give it a try, and if it doesn’t work, you can use the drawers for storage anyway!
I know this is probably too late, but I’ll throw my, belated, two cents in. A play pen might be a decent idea too. I bought one, I think it’s 9 sq ft and it came with a plastic liner for the bottom. I think it was only $40-$50.
