Hello! I have a few questions regarding bonding.  I’ve had my two babies since mid-January. They are male and female Netherland Dwarfs and will be 4 months next week.  They have never been in the same cage together but their cages are set up right next to each other. Only about one inch separates them. I let them out one by one every day and they Sugar(boy) is starting to groom Pepper through the NIC cage.  They sometimes just sit and stare at each other with their noses touching.  It’s the cutest thing!

I am planning to get them spayed/neutered at the same time.  Maybe in a couple of months since I realize the surgery for females is a more dangerous and they need to be at least 6 months.  My question is this:  After they are spayed/neutered and waiting a month for everything to heal, do I need to bring them to a neutral territory to bond? Or would you say they are pretty much bonded already? Has anyone experienced this before that can help me?

I’m already super excited for the day I can let them both out at the same time!!

My bunnies loved to kiss through the bars before they were bonded too, but they were not bonded. I would definitely put them in neutral territory like a bath tub to start out and if they are doing completely fine then you could try letting them out in a small pen together were ever there play time is.

Yes, you will need to put them in neutral territory after getting them both fixed.
You will need to wait a month to try to bond them, due to hormones being still high.

Behavior through cage bars is not indicative of how they will be together in an open space. I would also suggest that you increase the space between their cages. Rabbits can get impregnated or badly bitten through bars, so you want 3-4 inches between them.

My advice is to neuter the male ASAP, allow him to heal and his hormones to calm down, and then do the same when the female is old enough. This will also minimize the pregnancy risk if they somehow manage to get loose.

                Thanks for the advice!
