I try to post this once a day in my areas on Craigslist:
Subject: Live Easter Rabbit Bunny is a 10 year expensive commitment!
Despite what you may think, a rabbit is not an animal that you can just stick in a cage the size of a footlocker and feed until it dies. It is an animal that needs constant attention and socialization. It needs to be fixed (usually around $150 per rabbit) or when they reach 3 months and they’re not fixed, their hormones kick in and the cute, little fuzzy creature is suddenly lunging, scratching and biting and will be around for about 10 years.
Initial costs for setup of a rabbit is around $200. Monthly costs can go above $100 for food, greens, hay, litter and other things. They are considered an ‘exotic’ pet – which means they tend to go to the vet more often, have more issues with health and cost more to be seen – and that is when the vet is familiar with the animal. It can break its back by kicking out of someone’s grip or even falling the wrong way off the back of a couch.
And if they have babies (It’s amazing how many ‘boy’ rabbits turn out to be girls because sexing is so hard with them) that’s another 6-8 and in 2-3 months, the babies will be ready to have babies – a litter every month. When they reach 3 months and they’re not fixed, their hormones kick in and the cute, little fuzzy creature is suddenly lunging, scratching and biting when they’re not cared for correctly – or sometimes even when they are.
A rabbit is an incredible, loving pet that can be as social as a cat and have as many as different personalities as a dog – but they are not easy to care for. They are like living with a 2 year old for a decade. If you want to make a child happy, get them a chocolate one or a stuffed rabbit. That way, when they get bored with it in a month, you won’t have to worry about what to do with the animal. And setting them free is almost always a death sentence to them.
