Our new foster bun, Sterling, gets very excited when I greet him or have food for him.  But when he gets all excited and jumping around, he gives off a smelly scent.  I’ve never experienced this before, is this normal??

I have herd of rabbits giving off a smelly sent before even if they are neutered. I am not sure why they do it, but I am pretty sure its normal.

I think it’s normal, yes. He’s a happy bunny, and he wants you and everyone else to know it.
(The only other possibility I can think of is if his tummy is empty when you go to feed him, and the jumping around brings on a bit of gas. ‘Scuse him.)

Is he neutered? If not, that scent could be his musky “I love you” scent, especially if he is getting excited and jumping around. He could be wanting to mate.

If he is neutered, then since he is new to your home, he may be letting you and your bunnies know (especially if you have their scent on your hands) that “Sterling is in the house”. Sort of like putting a “scented picket fence” around his new little home when he invites you in to visit.

Do you notice that he leaves droppings while he’s jumping around? He could be leaving that extra special something on those — part claiming the place.

Yeah he’s neutered. He got fixed right before we got him but that was like a month ago so I don’t think it’s left over hormones (he doesn’t want to hump a stuffed bunny anymore haha!).
I’ve seen a few poos outside the litter box but I don’t think he does it when he jumps around. He’s in the basement and he doesn’t see us as much as the others, and he just gets oh so excited for food and seeing humans. Today my husband went to feed him and he jumped onto the grids and held on for dear life with his one paw wrapped around it lol! I guess he looked like spiderman! My husband had to pick him up of put him down. I wouldn’t be surprised if he jumped into our arms pretty soon o_O

Remy did this the other day. I actually posted about it lol.

Stan was making him binky like a madman and then whole room filled up with that distinctive skunky gland smell.

                    It was *weird*

Hannah gets smelly sometimes. When she first game to us she was awful! I was afraid our whole house was going to smell. She’s calmed down a lot since then and I almost never smell that oniony smell.

Otto also smelled like this once when they got into a scuffle and he was huffy and upset.

**raises hand* I’ve noticed this too though not due to excitement for food. Jersey has been emitting the scent gland smell when she’s smelt TimTim on me. It’s happened a couple of times recently and it’s the 1st I’ve ever come across this. I’d only ever smell scent glands when cleaning them. I don’t know if it was purely agression, fear-aggression or territoriality. Probably a combination. She was definately fired up, tail straight out or up and charging at me. Definate anal scent gland smell, no mistaking it.

I tend to smell that onion/garlic/corn chip type smell more with the territorial marking poops.

Glad it’s nothing abnormal then! When I go to feed him he sometimes lunges at the bowl and if I don’t put it down right away he growls o_O I think it’s safe to say we won’t be foster failures with him haha! He’s to much of a handful…cute though.
Oh and Jersey, I like how you described it as corn ship type of smell; I always thought that when Gracie did territorial poop (since she’s the only one that usually does it) it smelled like old Doritos Ranch chips lol! Good thing I like Doritos so I can stand the smell of her sometimes!
