i have two bunnies one is a female one is a male, they are 8 week old brother and sister. I am really concerned about being able to get them fixed before there is any “funny business”between them, how old do they have to be and is it the same for both genders? also should i separate them during the months close to when they will hit maturity?
please any advice or suggestions would help.

One of the forum leaders probably can give a better answer, but I think vets usually want them to be about 4-5 months when they spay or neuter. I also remember that a member had a fairly young bunny that got pregnant so they probably need to be separated very soon, if not now.

Agreed, some boys can mature early, so the best bet would be to separate now rather than later.

My vet waits until 6 month to spay females, and 4-6 months for boys.

Some vets will neuter male bunnies as soon as their testicles drop. My bunny’s showed up at 12 weeks, and if I remember right my vet neutered him a couple of weeks later.

Like Bumblebunny said, I also remember vaguely a post about member whose bunny had babies very early. Not sure if the age though was correct in the first place or if there was some question about that. But obviously if you have a male and female you have to be extremely careful.

You won’t able to get them fixed before they will be able to have babies though because even if you did have your male fixed early, he still has sperm that is viable for up to month and he can impregnate her even after he’s been fixed, and you won’t be able to get her spayed by then most likely. So unfortunately, you will have to separate them soon.

This article from he house rabbit society http://www.rabbit.org/care/babies.html  says that it is possible for some females, though not as common,  to become pregnant as early as 10 weeks.  (though 12 weeks is said to be the earliest by other experts).   But really, not sure if I would want to to test out first hand which experts are right.

And usually by the time you witness “funny business” with your own eyes, it has already occurred when you were not around. I would start making plans to separate them within the next week or two. Breeders separate males and females at 8 weeks.

Ditto-I’d seperate now. You don’t want babies-especially brother sister babies! Being rabbits they *can* reproduce young though the exact age will depend on the individuals. I just would seperate now.

They do pediatric spay/neuters in shelters so you could actually get them fixed now-though most vets prefer to wait until 4-6 months of age. You should select a vet now, have them in for a health check and your vet can book the surgeries for when he/she thinks they will be ready

Congrats on your buns! We love pictures *hint*
