It’s nothing urgent, but I thought I might try here for some ideas!  I’m not looking for a sustained job or a steady income, just a way to make a small amount of cash in the next month or two.  Since I’ve spent all my free time and college summer breaks pursuing activities to boost medical school applications, I don’t have any appreciable work resume to speak of, save a litany of healthcare certifications, molecular biology research qualifications, and volunteer duties.  The only “real” job I’ve held is currently as a tutor for my school’s learning center, earning $11/hr tutoring for miscellaneous science classes.

So far, the only job lead I’ve had is a listing teaching piano to young children, probably 2-3 hours a week, but I’m not entirely sure if it’s going to work out.  Food service/retail jobs generally don’t tend to work for me, as I’m juggling a very erratic class schedule as well as irregular tutoring hours; food service/retail types of jobs will typically have shift requirements that I can’t meet.

I guess I’m kind of taking a shot in the dark here, but feel free to throw any ideas my way! Thanks

What about babysitting? Or are you looking for more employment experience for your resume?

The only thing I can think of is mystery shopping. You generally have to visit the store/restaurant within a specific time period but you could work it around your schedule.

You could try a temp agency. I worked for one for awhile and got some long-ish term positions as well as a lot of short term, fill in for people while they’re sick or on vacation, type deals. A lot of times it was very small companies or law firms who needed someone to answer the phones or do some filing when a receptionist was out or things of that nature. And you can accept or turn down things based on your own schedule. It would be pretty hit or miss whether you actually managed to get any assignments very soon though.

I would say check out a temp agency. Though a lot of temp jobs are typical 9-5s, which might not fit with your schedule (at least the temp jobs I’ve known of).

Baby sitting is also a great idea! I hear they get paid quite a bit per hour and it’s something you can always turn down if you are busy doing something else.

I did that for a while.  I hated it.  It sounds like way more fun than it really is.

What about online work?  Things like KGB don’t pay well, but since you can do it when you feel like it, in you PJs, from your own home, while doing other stuff at the same time, you aren’t putting out for gas and a wardrobe and stuff which makes up for the low pay.  If your good at data entry, online medical billing pays better, and may actually be useful when you go into medicine.

How about animal sitting? I mean, going to people’s houses to feed animals while their slaves are on vacation.

Thanks for the suggestions so far everybody! I’m not really looking for steady employment, just thinking about pre-emptively recouping some of my summer travel costs while I’ve got a bit of time on my hands right now. I’m moving at the end of summer anyhow, so employment with long-term committment probably would be a little futile.  It actually looks like the piano teaching arrangement is going to work out, but it’s only 2 hours a week so I’m still open to more ideas.

Michelle – ooo good idea, I’ll look around to see if I can find some babysitting jobs.

Elrohwen – yea, a lot of the temp agency jobs are full-time positions (albeit for a short duration), which are a little hard to squeeze in for me.

Eepster – what is KGB? The only thing that comes to mind with that acronym is the former USSR intelligence/secret operations unit, which I’m assuming isn’t what you’re talking about…

LoveChaCha – maybe I can look into that for the summer! I definitely wouldn’t mind doing something like that.

KGB is a company that text messages answers to questions. You just have to look up stuff fast and accurately and send the answers back.
