So after Coco’s near death from bloat a few months ago, I have been a very nervous rabbit parent.

I’ve also been finishing my PhD comps ( done! Hurrah!) and starting to interview for professor jobs, so I haven’t been anywhere but polishing my CV and trying to sound like people should hire me.

That being said, I have kept a close eye on the Rabbits. The utter “Out of the blue”  and no real underlying cause nature of Coco’s Bloat really drove home how Fast rabbits can get sick and die.

So Tonight, at 5 pm I walk the salad into the room. If there is one thing I can count on …it is Two rabbits waiting by where their salad bowl shouldbe, waiting for the Human to deposit the food offering. Only Coco is there.

Odd. I call Jackson, and no reponse. I shake the papaya tablet jar. Coco gets very excited and I give her a tablet. Normally if Jackson is being slow, as soon as he hears Coco crunching the tablet he is out like a Shot for his.

Nope.  I think back to when I saw him last. Morning Salad? Yep. 1 pm when I cleaned litter and refreshed new hay? No. I didn’t see him then.

I find him under the bed and get him out. I offer him a papaya tablet. No go. I offer a dandelion green by putting it right up to his lips and pushing. Nope. I go and get a little pineapple juice. No Thanks.

I do some belly massage and give him some gas drops ( and rescue remedy). Call the vet and get him a late appointment.

Stasis, but early in the process. He gets sub Q fluids, Metacam and some probiotocs. I get metacam and probiotics to take home and critical care for force feeding.

I got some critical care into him tonight – and a couple of pieces of parsley. The fluids seemed to really help and I did see some Moist smallish poops. He definately seems more comfortable after the metacam, and jumped into the box and nibbled a few pieces of Hay.

Again, Thank You BB forum.  I’ve learned that speed is important in rabbit care – Him not eating since 1 p.m. or so and he was already dehydrated after only 5 hours.  That will, of course, make the stasis Worse. I know that Pain will keep him from eating, so I need metacam. I know that belly massage and gas drops that I started an hour before he was seen helped too!

And Now, I have a belly to massage

I hope he gets better soon! Stasis is always so scary, but it’s good that you caught it early.

{{{Jackson}}} Sorry to hear you’re dealing with this again. Vibrations on the tummy and some heat supposedly helps also. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the vibes – Jackson is Right as Rain today – His poops were smaller for sure, and soft ( from the massive fluid push) but There.
He is eating like a champ – Sitting in the box right now Gobbling Hay. I assume he is extra hungry since he normally sleeps during this time of day.

Was right there at 7 a.m. for the salad which he promptly finished off.

Of course, I am getting the heavy Eyeball since I handled him so much yesterday. That was one way I knew he wasn’t feeling well. As I told the Vet – If he was 100%, I would have lost serious skin trying to pick him up and examine him. The fact that he was letting me hold him and massage his belly was a sign in itself.

I am just really, really grateful that we nipped it in the bud.

Obviously I always am watching them for signs of change in habits…Had I waited another day, it would have been that much worse.

great that you caught it so quickly!  I know how scary it is as I have taken both Griff and Schroeder in for the same thing!  Griff bounced back quickly and even liked being fed the Critical Care.  Schroeder was a nightmare for me- did not want to accept the force feeding of Critical Care and I was so stressed out and in tears!

Waiting to take them in never really helps- and it is unlikely that it will resolve on their own if it has lasted for awhile and are in pain.  Plus it seems to happen on a Friday anyway and I decide it is cheaper to take them to regular exotics vet than to have an emergency vet bill.

I’m so glad Jackson’s feeling better! You must be SO relieved to se him eating- I never thought I would get so excited about seeing a bunny eat hay until BunBun got sick! And the feeling you get when they refuse food after going through an illness is just pure panic. It is really terrifying how quickly bunnies become deathly ill. I love rabbits but I really wish they weren’t so fragile . With cats and dogs you usually have more leeway- you can go to work and see how they are “later”. With rabbits, no way- everything is an emergency. My husband thinks I’m crazy for being so vigilant about their eating habits- but everyone here understands!
I always used to hesitate to take them to the vet or medicate them, possibly over “nothing”- but now I’d rather have a p*ssed off rabbit than not do anything and have it get worse. And yes, KatnpCrzy is right- it’s always Friday that they get sick! Or before a major holiday…
