› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Suggestion for new bunny room? UPDATE
So our big move into the new house is next week and I’m still debating the best way to house the buns. I wanted to get your opinions.
We have two options for where the bunnies can live..both on our first floor..
The first is sort of a sun room, our builder dubs it a “morning room”, but it’s basically a room off of the kitchen that has doors to our backyard and filled with windows. It’s a nice size and very open, plus it’s close to the kitchen, family room, etc and close to where we will spend time. But I had wanted to have them in their own room sort of separated so when we did have company we could leave them undisturbed…and also because this room would be great for entertaining company as well..so I don’t know if I’d want them living in it? So I’m not sure it’s best fitted for them/or us?
The second option is a room that has double doors that can be shut…we had wanted to make it an “office” but I’d willing to give it to them and use a room upstairs as an office instead if it meant they had their own room. The issue with this is that it’s carpeted, which I guess for some is normal, but ours have never been on carpet and I guess I’m worried they’ll destroy it (the first option room has a wood floor). I guess I’ll ask for advice on that when the time comes… Another issue is I feel like they’ll be far away from us, I’m used to having them right near our living room or family room, so this is a little set off in the front of the house… I don’t think it would be a bad option though, since we’d have them running around when we’re home anyway.
Any thoughts??
Would they be in a pen in the room or free roaming? Also keep in mind any finishes that might be in the room… bunnies LOVE woodwork.
Both spaces sound like nice options. I think for myself, I’d prefer having a downstairs office. I think it would be used more frequently if on the main floor. So I would probably end up using the sun room for the buns. Depending on the size, you could have a large pen in there for when company is over… or could you do a large pen in another room (like the corner of the family room)? They don’t have to necessarily have a dedicated room as long as everything is proofed and they have adequate exercise space.
My two have their double wide xpen in the same room as our computer desk. They have their space, we have ours. It works very well!
Just reread my post…
you could have a large pen in there for when company is over…
“C’mon Grandma, let’s go Aunt Susie… get in the pen. The bunnies are out.”
;o)
I think I’d prefer the office. Honestly, they’ll adore the carpet and you’ll see more binkies than you’ve ever seen! They might destroy it, but you can put another type of flooring over it (cheap area rugs, or something else). I think that option sounds a lot better than having them right in the main entertaining space and you can close the door to give them some privacy. Depending on what you need your office for, I imagine you can set it up in the same room as the rabbits if you needed (that’s what I would do, since I agree with Beka that a downstairs office would get used more). But if you work from home or something and really need a large dedicated space with no distractions, then having your office away from the bunnies would be better.
Also, not sure if you’ve considered other pets, but I thought I’d mention this since we’re looking at houses and considering how to keep a future dog separated from the buns – having a room with a door makes it so much easier to keep bunnies separated from other pets since baby gates aren’t always enough. Even if you don’t get another pet, a friend or family member might want to come over and bring a dog (my friend brought her dog over all the time before we got the bunnies).
I’d say second room. The first one sounds like a great room for you to use, and may get too hot for them to boot! Also, it might be a pain to step over toys and hay on your way out to the yard.
The room I keep my bunnies in has carpet but I layed down a rubber flooring overtop. The only issue I have with that flooring is that it shows stains-so one wee spot looks terrible. However, it goes over the carpet-so nothing to do when we move except pull it up, it has ridges so the bunnies have traction, it’s soft because it’s over the carpet-and it’s waterproof-so no damage. That’s an option. I found it at home hardware but have seen it in Rona and Home Depot too. It was cheap-the bedroom was like 150$ to do, and we used carpet seamer to seam it.
It’s this stuff:

Thanks for the feedback Beka…sorry I’ve been super busy with the move or I would have come back here sooner…Anyhow..
For now they will each be in their own pen…they are not bonded yet so I can’t let them out together right now. I’m very concerned with the wood in the house…it’s all brand new, but it’s all painted white too..so I guess I’m hopeful they won’t like it? But I’m still trying to figure out how to make this work in the new house without sacrificing too much with our new things… I’ll block off as much as possible. The family room is an idea too..I hadn’t thought of that.. We aren’t moving in for another day and the bunnies won’t get moved in until Wednesday so we are still throwing around options…
If we can fit it, we might try to do as you said, the pens in the office with the computer desk.
Thanks again!
LOL Beka you had me laughing with that comment…haha
Thanks Elrohwen! Neither of us work from home (permanently at least) so it would be okay to move the office, but I like the idea of having both in there…just have to see how everything fits. Like I said, we’re not moved in yet, so we’ll have to measure it all out first I guess… Binky overload would be a nice incentive though….
As far as other pets go, we would not be getting any others… but that was a good thought..
Thanks Kokaneeandkahlua for your tips… I think my little Blu would probably try to eat the rubber flooring though…he seems to chew on everything! But that’s a good option to keep in mind..
I was thinking the same thing about the sun room getting too hot for them…we would have blinds on all the windows though, so hopefully that would be good enough. I like that room mostly because they’d be sort of set off from our main house area but still have lots of space…but like I said that room is a great asset for us to use too… hmm. I guess I still don’t know what to do..haha
I think room #2 also, and it sounds like you already leaning that way. I figure that they will destroy the flooring in any room you use, whether is is carpet or wood. The carpet will just be cheaper and easier to replace once they have destroyed it than the hardwood floors would be.
Well I decided for the sun room instead…so far so good. It seemed like too big of a space to pass up…They’re still recovering from their long day yesterday, so lots of unfinished salad (not typical!!) But I know they’ll come around…We interrupted their sleeping yesterday with a car ride and unpacking so they’re all out of whack and sleeping a LOT today…
Wow looks like a huge space!! Nicely done ![]()
Beautiful. One warning. Urine will burn hardwood. I would get a couple of larger area rugs that have a rubber backing or water proof the underside somehow. (Urine won’t burn it right away, but it can overnight. You might have some sort of protective coating on your floors where you may not have to worry about that?
That is such a beautiful room! Looks great!
Wow! What a great room for the bunnies!! I bet they will enjoy lounging in the sunlight!!!
Thanks everyone! I’m jus glad we got them here and settled in. They are pretty much adjusted to the change but their eating schedules are still way off. But they are eating/pooping fine just different time than usual for eating.
Thanks binkybunny for the heads up! It is engineered wood so I’m not sure if it’s different than natural hardwood? But I’ll keep that in mind. I don’t want to jinx anything but usually poop is the only thing that gets outside their litterboxes which are inside the store bought cages within the pens. Either way I’ll look into it.
Lastly, the only thing still to set up is a bunny proofed area outside the pens for free run time. They must hate us by now bc they haven’t been out in two days! We have so much unpacking still so it’s been put off. We’ll do something soon though.
