Hi guys so as some of you may now Im not working right now because im having a pretty rough pregnancy
but im still doing some work from home. Anyways as some of you may know im a nurse so our hospital has this great program where they offer their medical services to adoption agencies so we give annual check-ups to children 17 and under. Once a year adoption agancies all gather in a certain place and we do kinda of a health fair for the children. Its really awesome doctors and nurses from different hospitals gather up and plan this event. Anyways my boss has asked if i could volunteer my time this year and would like for me to discuss the topic of puberty to all girls ages of 11-15. Basically how these fairs work is they separate the kids into groups and hand them out schedules of certain “lectures” they have to attend according to their age. I will be giving a “lecture” on puberty just going through some of the main topics on female puberty. Anyways im in charge of this specific area so I need to come up with pamphlets and “goodie bags” and age appropiate visuals to go with what I will be explaining. I got the pamphlets already and visuals but would like some input from the females here in this forum as to what the “goodie bags” should include. Apparently alot of jr. high schools do this for their students but when I went to jr. high i never got a goodie bag from my health class
Also I wanted to include a chart for them to keep track of “stuff” I was wondering if anyone here has any ideas of charts that would be easy and fun to use for an 11-15 yr old girl? nothing to explicit or complicated I want to keep this age appropiate.
Hope some you girls can give some input I would really appreciate it greatly.
I have heard of Jr. high giving out a pad and the travel size deodorant.
I never got as goodie bag back then either! So I have no idea what to suggest… Good luck though ![]()
Does the place the pamphlet came from have any charts? Maybe email or call them and ask.
It’s been so long since I’ve been in junior high and had this lecture (which is probably obsolete by now) that I would have no idea what to give.
Yeah pads may be good to put in the goody bag, and a chart/calendar for them to mark “X”s on days of the period. (Stress keeping track will help you predict when the next one will be so you can be prepared -no accidents).
If you have a good budget can you get travel/purse sized stuff? How about face wipes to preventing acne? That sorta thing starts to happen then too. Maybe something fun too, like bracelets, lip gloss, or a travel mirror? You don’t want to be all serious.
Make sure to mention, you can still go swimming!! I remember I wasn’t sure about that (as well as any other sport and that tampons might be better for athletic activities).
I got a goody bag back in the 5th grade
Travel sized stuff is a great idea. I would recommend possibly face moisturizer, lotion? I think having a nice soft face is great ![]()
For the goodie bags, I would recommend travel sized items and then a little something that is fun. I think the women’s health center at my school was giving away goodie bags that had a bottle of bubbles in it. And this was for college girls! LOL!
Will you be talking about breast development too? If you do, definitely let them know not to be scared by it when it starts happening. Sometimes the tissue starts out really dense and feels like a hard lump and it can be painful. It can be quite tramatizing for some girls and it helps letting them know that it is completely normal! Sorry… I wasn’t trying to be too graphic there!
LBJ10, that sounds good. Mentioning or having an information pamphlet on yearly gyno exams would be okay?
i’m sorry but i have nothing to contribute here…
OOh! I got a goodie bag. We got a single pad and a travel size Secret Deodorant, a pamphlet on birth control, a condom and a sample pack of Herbal Essence shampoo.
Now, what I wish they would have given us instead were a small pack of pads or those tiny teen tampons, some panty liners, deodorant, face wash and moisturizer (express how important lotion is, that it helps keep acne under control and prevent wrinkles which WILL happen one day) and maybe a couple of tips on how to cope with the stuff that teens struggle with, emotionally or socially.
Gyno exams! Good one ChaCha! Tell them about the ice cold duck bill, the weird jelly, the uncomfortableness of the whole event and then tell them that they can avoid this for a few more years if they dont have sex!!! Do you have a video of this procedure? It would have scared me for another year lol. But to be serious, yeah, you really should tell them about that and that they need to have these done every year. Im sure the pamphlet tells you to tell them all of this, pap smears, breast exams, yeast infections and what to do about them.
Good luck with them!
Oh, one more thing. When I was battling acne, I tried a ton of products. You know what finally worked? Taking a vitamin! Just a simple prenatal vitamin everyday! They are about $5 a bottle (in OK) and now I just wash my face with normal bar soap and toss on a little moisturizer and bam! No more red itchy dry areas, no breakouts, no giant pimples. It’s been the best discovery I have ever made! Maybe you could mention that to them as well! Better nutrients=better skin, not expensive harsh chemicals, they just burn your skin and make you cry!!!
Oh WOW!!!! You guys are great!!!!! I now have many ideas!! I love the whole herbal essence shampoo idea, the moisturizer, deodorant and the bubbles too!!!!!! I love the vitamin Idea too plus acne face wash =( Definitely will include some sanitary napkins and other menses necessities. And yes will talk about breast development and all of that other stuff that goes on plus women healthcare including self breast examination. THANKS ALOT GUYS!!! And i think I will go with giving them a personal day planner instead of a chart. I’ll go buy some really nice girly day planners with stickers and stuff like that. Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!!
I definitely recommend using the U by Kotex brand of pads/tampons in the goody bags. It marketed towards teens and young adults and all of the products come in bright, fun colors. And everything is fairly small and easy to conceal in a purse. The whole ad campaign is really funny too. I’m 20 and I actually got excited to go out and buy some, lol, but I’m a dork. The bubbles are a great idea too! I wish I had gotten a goody bag when I had that lecture. Good luck teaching the girls!
Everex, me too, LOL. I like the U : )
I was a wee bit surprised to come upon this post, but you girls are handling it tastefully and it’s a good cause. (Longhairmike, I hear you.)
I just want to add that a calendar is a really good idea, and I have seen small ones in the pet stores and the bookstores with bunnies on them. So a cute calendar would be pretty but useful. OR, you could order bunny calendars from a rescue shelter, using it as a segway to teach about birth control while supporting a rescue that handles bunnies that are the result of not using precautions for pets.
Pix of bunnies and litters can illustrate the result of not taking precautions once you “become a woman” which is the bottom line when puberty kicks in. No matter how young, nature has declared you eligible to be a mother. (Not too cute or girls will want to have litters!)
In our “girls-only” puberty health class, we were given small slips of paper PRIOR to the presentation and encouraged to ***anonymously*** write down any questions we had. After, everyone folded up their papers and handed them in (even if blank!) The presenter, I believe an RN, read the questions (she did not show the papers and she had no way to identify our writing or anything) and she addressed our questions the best she could. I can guarantee that if she had simply said “ANY QUESTIONS?!” after the presentation, NOT ONE HAND would have gone up. By doing this anonymously, she was able to give us feedback without causing embarrassment on an already embarrassing subject.
Good idea Beka ![]()
Everex thanks for that idea!! I really like it I was gonna go with just a regular sanitary napkin but Kotex U are pretty funky and im sure the gurls would loooooooove having something like that. I will call the Kotex company and see if they are willing to donate sample products of U. Also rappitpam the whole bunny calendar sounds nice, ill try and get in contact with a bunny organization here and see of any of them sell calendars the hospital pays for all of this so im pretty sure they would love the idea its sort of a cause helping another cause
Oh and Beka had that in mind already I was already warned that not many hands go up at the end of lecture so i had that in mind already. ![]()
Yeah, don’t forget about the other hygiene stuff, like deodorant and what not. And maybe some of those plastic razors. Shaving comes along with all this too.
Oh yes! I remember how giddy we all were when my friends and I decided it was time to shave our legs for the first time. It doesn’t really have anything to do with hygiene, it’s just something you do.
