You really cannot. I would just suggest changing the whole box as often as you feel you need too but at least once a week – I change my litter boxes every 4 days.

The poops are dry and relatively odor-free, so they really are not as much of a concern as the urine. Rabbits can get scalding on their feet/heels if allowed to sit in an overly wet box, so frequent cleaning is necessary.

If your concern is the high cost of the paper pellets, you may want to look into wood stove pellets or horse stall bedding (available at hardware/tractor supply stores.)  You can get 40lb bags for around $6, and many people feel they do a better job at absorbing urine and masking odor than the recycled paper pellets.

I agree with the others that it’s easiest to just dump the whole thing. Some people do it every day, but I usually only do it once a week (my two share two large boxes). I add hay to the top of the boxes as the week goes on so the surface stays dry. Like Beka said, poop isn’t an issue – it’s the pee that’s stinky and messy.

I do litter box cleaning every 3-4 days. I use wood stove pellets, which are so easy to clean up after. I stick the litter box in a plastic bag and dump the contents into the bag. I put on a glove sometimes if there is some wetness that is stuck to the box.

Pee is the main issue. I only smell it when I am dumping the box contents into the bag. Sometimes, I can’t even smell it.

Oh, I forgot to mention that lining the bottom of the litter box with newspaper or a paper towel helps a lot when it’s time to clean. All of the litter comes out with the paper towel, leaving just some wetness at the bottom. Without the paper towel it stick in clumps and is much messier to clean up

I use the same kind of litter (Yesterday’s News), but I mainly just clean out the wet areas. I tilt the litter box, so it’s up on one end at about a 45 degree angle, and the clean dry pellets slide to the other end, then I scoop up all the wet litter that’s clinging in a clump on the high end. Then I reverse and scoop out the wet litter on the other end. I do this every day. I add more litter as necessary. Once a week or so, I dump out the entire contents and wash out the litter box with a natural/organic cleaner.

My two rabbits have free range of the house and screen porch and most of their poops, along with some of their pee, is on the carpet or floor, not in the litter box. I have 2 litter boxes in the house and 2 on the screen porch, but they mainly use one in each place (when they use it). I still find that the boxes need cleaning every day. I don’t like for my rabbits to sit in them, when they may be sitting on wetness.

With any method of cleaning, you are likely to waste some pellets that are still dry and clean, but that’s unavoidable.
