Over a year ago Dexter had statsis and he was on meds as well as critical care.  I remember him hunched in a corner in his condo and wouldn’t eat or move .  They took x-rays when he had this problem and said he had a big blockage and didn’t know what it was.

I am afraid this is happening again   At 5pm today (about 4 hours ago) I gave him his dinner pellets and he was acting normal bouncing around and going nuts as he always does.  At 7pm I usually take him out  and he wouldn’t budge.  He would usually zoom out and sit at the kitchen waiting “patiently” for his cilantro snack.  My fiancee put his hand in his condo to pet him and he bit him!  This is very odd because Dexter never bit anyone in his life.  I changed his litter box so I can monitor his poo and left cilantro in his condo as well.  He jumped into his litter box and jumped out, didn’t do anything.  Now he is on his bottom level hunched in the corner.  When I try to pet him he jumps for some reason.  I am so scared and I am wondering why this always has to happen on a Saturday night!!  The emergency vet here scares me too, the last time we had to take him there the vet picked him up by his scruff and I got so angry.  I don’t think they were even rabbit savy even though we were referred to them by the emergency vet hotline our vet provides.

Sorry for the long rant, I am just so scared for him and I remember how stressful it was on him before.   I am not 100% sure if it is statsis but I still have some critical care from a year ago, would it still be good?  Should I do something else in the meantime, like get some baby gas medicine.  Where should I look for it if I should?  I really wish I could wait until Monday but I will take him to the emergency vet if I have to   I am just hoping that I will go in there and he is just playing a mean trick on me!

Did you check and see if there is a date on the critical care?

I just checked the critical care and it expired in 2009 He finally came out of his condo and is laying down in the corner of the living room. I rubbed his tummy and there doesn’t seem to be anything hard there, just his tummy is growling really loud.   No he hasn’t eaten anything since dinner time, and no poop yet since I changed his litter at around 7pm tonight, he just pee’ed once.

Is there any way you could get Simethicon? I think they sell it at a drug stores but I am not positive as I have never bought it myself. Have you tried offering his favorite treat?

I can try to find simethicon somewhere tomorrow morning, there is a walgreens around the corner that might have it. I tried to give him a raisin and he looks interested and smells it but then backs away. He keeps shifting around and laying in different positions like he is uncomfortable

No he hasn’t had any water since dinner time I am assuming.

I would try to get some water in him if he hasn’t drank in awhile, Do you have a syringe on hand? You could try to do a 50/50 pellet and water mix to get some water/food in him. Also is it normal for him to sit still while you rub his tummy?

I just rubbed his tummy again and it now seems that the right side is harder then the left. I have a few syringes on hand, yes. I will try the water first and see how it goes. He doesn’t like to be held or held down at all. He usually wiil sit still for head rubs and stuff like that but if I tried a tummy rub on him normally he would just run away from me. He is very calm right now which isn’t normal for him.

Sounds like he could have stasis. or some sort of blockage that is making him uncomfortable. Here is a link on how to tell if your rabbit is sick if you want to look at it:
http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sickbun.html
ok thank you. I got him to drink some water but he wasn’t happy. He just sat there and let me squirt the water into his mouth so I know he is not feeling well Should I wait 12 or 24 hours since he ate his dinner? I wish my normal vet was open tomorrow

If he has not eaten or pooped in 12- 24 hours he needs to see a vet.

keep trying to get him to drink and eat until you can get him to the vet. also you can try to rub his belly to try to get things moving again. If walgreens is right around the corner you could go and pick up some Simethicon, I think most walgreens are open 24 hours a day but i could be wrong.

should I try to find a store that has simethicone now or could I wait until the morning? I don’t know what is open 24 hours besides Walgreens and I don’t think they have it.

I don’t know what time you were posting Dex but wondering how things are?

That article Mocha posted is a goody.

Save them somewhere handy if you don’t have them already.

It does sound a bit like some gas discomfort/ possible GI issue. I hope you were able to get him feeling better. (((Vibes!)))

He is doing so much better now, I am so happy!! Thank you so much!! I slept in the living room with him lastnight and he woke me up this morning being his cheerful energetic self! He hasn’t really touched his pellets or cilantro yet, but he did do 7 poops which all looked normal, drank a ton of water, and ate some hay. I gave him one more dose of the simethicone just in case. He seems to be doing fine, I am still keeping my fingers crossed. He was a champ through all of this. Thank you once again

I posted at first around 7pm lastnight, and started the simethicone at around midnight.

It’s always a sure sign of gas discomfort for mine when they let me touch the belly! A bit of a tummy massage helps sometimes & simethicone seems to also. Glad to hear Dexter is perky again. : )

I’m happy that Dexter’s feeling better! Coming on here for advice/support has saved me and my bunnies plenty of times. Even when I don’t get a reply right away, I go on the Search option and read up on whatever my bunny is going through. It helps a lot just reading about people dealing with the same thing, and gives me good ideas too. What happened with Dexter sounds just like my buns when they have gas. The problem is that it can turn into GI stasis, as you know. I always get sooo scared when Bun acts sick since he had stasis- it really is a traumatic experience. BunBun took a while to get back to eating greens and pellets after his tummy trouble- the main thing is them eating hay, and it sounds like Dexter is doing fine with that .
That’s so strange though- my bunnies always get sick on weekends/holiday when the regular vet isn’t around too. And I always feel like it might do more harm than good taking Bun to a vet that doesn’t know about rabbits, especially if it turns out that he just has gas. It’s such a hard call. Glad you guys got through it fine .

Dexter ate a bunch of cilantro today, drank some more water, and ate some of his morning pellets. I refreshed his hay but he’s hasn’t touched the hay much since he ate a bunch this morning. I am still watching him carefully and he seems to be doing ok so far. He pooped a bit more too but not as much as he normally does. Should I keep giving him the gas medicine or just wait it out since he is doing ok now? I love these forums and I am so greatful that they are around, I love the support here!

I think he knew how much I cared for him the other night because yesterday he kept following me everywhere and giving me tons of kisses and binkies. You guys are the only ones I can tell this too because if ever I told anyone my bunny was sick or he did something cute the only thing that would come out of their mouths is “bunny stew” Thank you all!
