Good morning BB! I need some more advice about my little Pepper again…(she is 12 week old Netherland Dwarf)…

About a week ago (Wednesday) to be exact, I noticed she wasn’t pooping or eating. I ended up bringing her to the vet and they gave her a fluid shot.
That same evening I was told from the breeder (with over 20+ years experience) to give her a little bit of mineral oil. I did, and she did poop. She was actually back to normal that evening.

This Wednesday night when I got home from work I let her out of her cage (indoors) and she seemed perfectly fine.  Then she went back in her cage and laid down in her litter box and was shaking. I was petting her and she just kept shaking/shivering (maybe about 10 minutes), but she seemed very uncomfortable.  She then pooped and there was a little bit of clear like jelly stuff.  After that, she seemed to be better (stopped shaking).  Thursday morning about 6am, I checked her litter box and her poop was normal and she seemed normal as well. I emailed the breeder and told her what happened, and she said the clear jelly like poop is called Mucoid Enteritis. And that if she was pooping normal than there’s no need to worry. I looked up Mucoid Enteritis…and I’m very concerned.

Thursday morning, sometime between 8am to 3pm she had pooped soft poop. Quite a bit and very messy. It was stuck all over her little butt and feet. She still seemed to be acting normal, not listless or anything. Eating and drinking the same.  I read on the rabbit.org webite to give her a dry bath to wash off the poop so we don’t get a fly-strike. OMG…more worries! So I followed the rabbit.org instructions…using baby cornstarch. I tried so hard to get the poop off her but it was so difficult but I managed to get as much off as I could.

This morning, I checked on her at 5am, she did poop but it was smaller than her norm. I am planning to bring her to the vet this afternoon. But wanted your advice on this matter…and if anyone has experienced this. Also, what should I expect at the vet? The previous one I took her too didn’t give me such a great impression so I’m taking her to another one.

Also, I have another bunny, same breed and age and is doing great *knocking on wood*

Sorry for such a long message! Any help will be much appreciated.
        Thank you!

I would have the vet do a fecal test to check for coccidia.

I would not worry too much about fly strike as long as she is inside and you keep her area clean.

Tell the vet everything you have told us so they can advise you.

Sarita: I was advised to use Simethicone drops for Pepper… Have you heard anything on this? Is this safe for bunnies?

It is safe, but it’s not going to get to the root of the problem. Is that what the vet advised?

Poor Pepper! I’m sorry that I don’t have any specific advice, but I hope you are able to find a good rabbit vet who can diagnose Pepper and get her on the road to recovery. It definitely sounds like she’s have some serious GI issues, but I’m not familiar with baby bunny health issues. I hope she gets better soon!
