Just a quick update and I thought it might help me to write and talk to some people who understand.  =)  As most of you know Rhinelander was adopted just before Christmas and I had decided to take a break as we just had too many things going on.  Then I needed knee surgery.  Well, it’s been 4 weeks and I still can not bend my knee as much as I need to or get off my crutches.  I am working VERY hard and doing everything I’m suppose to plus more.  Not to mention, my therapy appointments just went from twice a week to 4 times a week.  It’s becoming very frustrating and discouraging.

So, that past 4 weeks I’ve been missing Hugo and rabbits in general.  I know it’s not a doable thing right now.  I can’t ask my husband to take care of a rabbit when he already takes care of me, our girls and the house on top of his full time job.  Plus crutches and rabbits would be very dangerous and probably scary for the bunny!  I just really miss having a rabbit jumping up on the couch with me for treats and pets.  It’s very soothing for me to even just watch them.  Rabbits can bring so much laughter, joy and happiness to a home.  I wish I knew someone who could even just bring a bunny for a visit!

I have been helping the shelter I’ve worked with by posting their rabbits on websites, filtering emails and helping with applications and adoptions over the computer.  I’ve helped them find a number of bunnies new homes.  Which makes me SO happy.  I’m so glad I can help them.

But hopefully I will be on my feet soon and can start looking for our new family member.  Thanks for listening!  Oh, and I LOVE seeing all of your bunnies on here.  Such beautiful rabbits you all have!

I know how you feel.   I went a couple of months without a pet.   Drove me nuts.  I have had pets all my life.   Was just so weird not to have one.   I think pets are a necessity.

My knee surgery went well.  I still have to be careful kneeling.  It has been 5 months now.  I still can’t get down on all fours cuz it hurts my knee too much.  I can get on all fours but putting weight on the knee is painful so I don’t do it.   When the weather changes it hurts or the humidity is really high.

I rode my bike yesterday figured it was about time I see how it holds up.  No pain whatsoever.  But my back sure hurt lol.

I put most of my weight on the left knee when I squat down to take care of the buns.   Hopefully my left one won’t be wearing out.

My shoulder is much better but still hurts with certain movements.

What kind of surgery did you have on your knee?  I had an ortheroscopy.  Torn miniscus.   They didn’t give me crutches.  And living upstairs wasn’t too much fun.

The guy at the dr office said I can pedal like on an exercise bike for my therapy.   It is easier to do that at home than go to p/t 3x a week.  I pedaled a total of 2x.   The bike ride went well yesterday tho.

Hope it gets better and you can bend it again.

Thanks Mocha! The thought is very sweet.

BT, I had a torn meniscus but I also had to have a new ACL put in. I either tore it almost 10 years ago or I never had one (they aren’t sure). So I also have 2 screws and a staple in my leg right now to hold the new ACL in place. I still can’t even roll of my toes when I walk which is why I can’t give up the crutches yet. My bedroom is upstairs so I have been sleeping on the couch for the past 4 weeks. I got a recumbent exercise bike last night to help me stretch my knee at home. I can only rock the pedals back and forth about a quarter of a turn right now. The goal is to keep the bend that the therapist can get me at when I’m at home. I lose about 20 degrees over a days time.

Knowing that I have to be better before I can get a new friend is all the more reason to keep me working hard. I also miss doing this with and for my family too. Not to mention doing things for myself. =)

It is a weird feeling to have everyone doing for you when you are used to doing for yourself.   Are the screws going to come out later or they are supposed to stay?

OH you must really miss your bed right now.  Can you put any weight on it yet?

May this healing time fly by and you be well in no time.

Thanks BT! Thankfully the screws are dissolvable because I have reacted to stainless steel pins in the past. The staple is titanium and they said if it bothers me they can take it out later. I can put almost full weight on it. My strength has come back really well. Just can’t bending I’m fighting with.

I can totally relate. I’m in physical therapy for my back and I’m not seeing much improvement either. Plus I am going to have to move in with my dad. So right now I’m just depressed about it all. And a snuggly bunny would make a big difference! It’s just not in the cards yet.

And I have Lolli and she is a total sweetheart. But she doesn’t do much or give kisses. She has started to come up for pets when I’m on the floor, getting ready to go to bed. Eddie was my snuggler. My Mr Kissy Kissy Snugglebun. lol He’d randomly hop up to me and give me kisses. And I could hold out my arms and ask him if he wanted snuggles and if he did, he’d hop over to me. If not, he’d totally take off, sometime with foot flicks. haha I try that with Lolli and just get the death stare. LOL I guess the best way to describe Lolli is that she’s like a teenager – totally disapproving of everything, but will totally surprise you with her sweetness on occasion.

It gets hard sometimes. I love Lolli to bits but it’s just different with her. Not a bad different. Just different.

I hope you get better soon! My aunt broke both bones in her ankle and had to have a plate put in. She is now in a cast, but has to keep her ankle elevated to keep the swelling down. So she’s almost immobile like you. I had corrective surgery on both my knees at different times when I was in high school and it sucks so much. Being a teenager was easy cause I wasn’t responsible for anything. I know what it’s like to be staring at 4 walls for most of the day and start thinking about all the things you COULD do if you were able.

I hope you feel better soon! I will be praying for you and your family! Maybe some day when your feeling a little better you could visit your local rabbit shelter.

my bro in law   got in 2 accidents about a year apart.    Both times he hurt the same knee and had surgery.    He cannot bend it  but halfway.  It won’t get any better.    I think he had a knee replacement.

You will do good don’t worry about it not bending all the way.  I know you are trying to get it to bend in the first place.  You are working hard at it too.  Yes it gets very boring being immobile or stuck in the house all the time trying to recover.

Having surgery 4 months apart was very confining.   Was driving me nuts.

Dissolvable screws  thats something I never heard of b4.   Thats neat.   Most people are not allergic to titanium.    Glad you aren’t.

Did they tell you to put cold n heat on it ?    I am wondering if putting heart b4  exercising it would help it bend more when you are doing this at home.   You have probably tried all sorts of things already.

Get well soon   come on knee lets bend for Amy&Hugo.    Amy wants another bunny so knee hurry up n bend

Thanks Mocha. That means a lot to me. I would love to go for a visit but all of their bunnies are in foster care. They do not have a building. Maybe I could ask for a house call??? LOL I need a therapy bunny! =)

BT, thanks for the laugh. I love the end of your message. I use heat the whole time I’m exercising and then ice immediately afterward. Otherwise the swelling is too much to handle. Hopefully, 4 times a week in therapy will help me keep the bend I leave with.

Amy, do you have a cryotherapy machine? When my mother had her knee surgery her surgeon insisted that she get or rent one for while she was in the hospital and for use at home after, and the difference it made was astounding. I borrowed it when I was having some knee pain and it was great. It’s bascially just a cooler that you fill with ice and water, it has a tube leading from it to an attached pad that you wrap around the limb and cold water circulates through the pad. You can wear it pretty much 24/7 if you want, I know immediately after surgery my mother did.   There were a few medical/mobilty supply places here that rented them out, but the purchase cost was about the same as 2 rental periods so she just bought it.

I found a picture of someone using one, I have no idea who this person is but it’s a good representation of it.

I’m glad to hear you’re doing well!

The hardest thing in the world is to wait (and wait and wait and WAAAAIIIIIITTTTTTTT….) when you really want something (or somebun!) But keep getting stronger and better.

You have a head start because of your rescue work (THANK YOU by the way!) so when the time comes, the bun will be there.

ScooterandAnnette, I did not have one. I did have a cooler that refill an ice wrap. I had a CPM machine. It’s a metal motorized machine that moves your leg for you that costs $4,000. Thankfully the insurance covers that rental! They say it works better. who knows? I ice all the time though. The other thing that has been so difficult is that I only took half of the prescribed pain meds and only for 3 days. They made me too sick. Then I took Tylenol for 2 weeks but I haven’t been able to take that now either. So I’ve been without any pain medicines for 2 weeks now.

Beka, Thanks! I’m definitely waiting! I know I just can’t do it right now. It would just be nice to have a little fuzzy friend to keep me company. Especially when I’m home alone. They actually have a bunny that sounds perfect for our family that they have had since Christmas. She said he’ll probably still be there when I’m up and running again because he’s black. So I know when the time is right the right bunny will be waiting for us to love it!

Thanks for all the encouragement. I knew you guys would understand! =)

                                  Hi Amy

I just talked to my boyfriend. He said that it will take a couple of months to recover fully from the surgery. He worked with some students that have had to have ACL and menisus surgery. I hope the therapy will help

I’m happy to see you on the boards.. keep us updated on how you are and I am looking forward to hearing about the newest addition to the family in the coming future

I just know you will do great with the recovery. Have you tried something like advil instead of tylenol? It may be gentler on you. Ask your doc!

Your perfect bun will definitely be there when you are ready for him or her. You won’t be bun-free for too long!

Thanks Brittany. My Dr and therapist said I should already have a 90 degree bend. My Dr is a very aggressive D and said he had already wanted me at 120 degrees. Everyone is different though and my therapist made me feel better by telling my I’m not the first person she’s had struggle this bad.

Monkeybun, Advil (ibuprofen) is very hard on me and I’m allergic to Asprin. I had to stop taking the Tylenol because I was getting pain in my lower back that was from my kidneys. My body told me I had taken enough meds. Thanks for the suggestion though.
