Just as the title says. How did you first discover that rabbits could be house pets? What made you decide to get one as a pet?
I’ve always loved rabbits, but I used to think that they could only be kept in outdoor hutches. Around the middle of 2008, when I was really into ghost videos and photos, I discovered some videos of a cute house rabbit on Youtube. Coincidentally, that was right around the same time that my last pet fish died, so I was looking for a new kind of pet to have. I loved the idea of having a rabbit as an indoor pet, so I started learning as much about them as I could. I got Mr. Bunny a few months later. ![]()
I had a rabbit as a pet when I was a little kid. Unfortunately, my mom didn’t like her very much (she smelled and spaying rabbits was practically unheard of then) and I came home one day to find my rabbit missing from my room. My mom had given her away to someone at work who was going to keep her outside in a hutch. I was crushed.
After I grew up and moved out on my own, my boyfriend (and later husband) and I had a variety of pets. We didn’t consider getting a rabbit until our chinchillas passed away. My husband was actually the one who thought of getting a rabbit. He was missing the chinchillas and wanted a new pet. So we ended up getting Leopold and then Wooly followed.
I had a rabbit growing up too. But he was kept inside during the winter and outside during the summer. We didn’t know any better. Eddie was an impulse buy at Petco when I was going through a really bad depression. I brought him home and immediately did a crash course on house rabbits. A little over a year later, I got Lolli!
When he was in college, my older brother told my family about a girl who would bring her pet bunny to club meetings every week; my sister (who was about 12 at the time) immediately started asking for a rabbit. My parents never let us have pets growing up because they’re very strict about being clean, but after doing some research, we decided that house rabbits wasn’t a terrible idea. However, my parents still weren’t too convinced to go out and get one. Then one day, we were at the pet store and saw the cutest little baby rabbits, and that was it! So I guess it was kind of an impulse pet buy, but not quite, because we had considered/researched bunnies previously; just weren’t expecting to pick up a rabbit when we did.
I honestly have no idea. I’ve wanted a dog for a long time, but since we’re renting and I traveled constantly for work (at my last job) I knew it wasn’t an option. I’d had gerbils on and off since I was 8 and I loved little furry critters, but they just weren’t cuddly enough and couldn’t spend much time out of their cage. I’m allergic to cats, so that was out. I started researching rabbits for some reason and realized they could be the house pets I wanted, while still having a lot of characteristics of the small pets like gerbils and not requiring nearly as much time and energy as dogs.
A couple weeks before my birthday I started bugging my husband about getting a rabbit and I found Otto at a local breeder. He agreed to a bunny and we’ve been in love ever since!
I had a house rabbit when I was born.
I ALWAYS wanted one.
I built a rabbit trap in my yard when I was like I don’t know…six…I had a cereal box and a carrot and a harmonica…so the rabbit would run up to get the carrot, be out of breath and that would sound the harmonica so I could collect the rabbit out of the cereal box…
It gets better…my dad says thats not a rabbit trap…you dig a whole and cover it with leaves. My mom could have killed him, because cause and effect escaped him…and they came home to find I’d enlisted the neighborhood to help me dig wholes all over the yard.
Never caught one.
A good friend had one when I was in uni and I loved her bunny-she had him free range.
One day I pop in a pet store (I’m in my twenties now and working on my second degree) to get a gift for my dog…and I see the bunnies…I go over and check them out…realize I’m an adult now, and I brought Kokanee home. And I’ve had bunnies ever since though now I know, you don’t buy them in petstores.
I had one as a little girl, but it wasn’t my responsiblity.
I’ve always liked rabbits. I have a lot of rabbit related stuff in my bedroom..
When my mom passed away, I had to move out of our apartment and into the house my dad lived. It was just him and I, since my cousins found a house and moved out shortly after I moved in.
My grandma and I talked and decided it would be a good idea to have a pet companion. I grew up with lots of animals, so my dad was okay with it.
So I did my research, bought books, etc. I was given some money from my relatives after my mom passed and I used part of it to buy stuff for my future bunny. I believe that is money well spent, because of the love that I received from Chacha is priceless. I believe my mom bought Chacha and I together and thought that we would have a good bond ![]()
I had never thought of having a rabbit as a pet when I was younger. I never knew anyone who had a pet rabbit. I’ve now talked to people who lived on farms and stuff and have ALL had rabbits as kids. I grew up in San Francisco, so I guess that’s why.
Anyway, so I moved out on my own after college to an apartment that doesn’t allow pets. Of course, I wanted a pet. I couldn’t get a dog (I wanted a big dog) or cat (can’t have the cat sitting at the window and be seen). Then I saw these baby rabbits at a pet store (they looked terrified) and fell in love with their cute faces. I went to a breeder on a whim and got Cheddar. It was really spontaneous since I didn’t even buy a cage, hay, or anything yet. Then I became obsessed and got Poopy and Meatball less than a year after getting Cheddar.
I got my first pet rabbit at 6 thanks to my grandpa. I was really sick as a child so I missed a lot of school and never really was able to play outside. We used to live in a 3 bdrm apartment so we didn’t have room for a dog and I was scared of cats, lol. I spent a lot of time alone and my grandpa felt that was not healthy for a child. So one day my grandpa came over and he told me we were going to pick up a surprise, i got super excited he got me dressed up and we walked to some pet adoption fair that was going on in my community and he let me pick out any rabbit i wanted. The rabbit I got was still a baby she was 3 months and I just fell head over heels for her!!! We got home and he helped me build a hutch in my room so I could keep her with me at all times. It was great! A rabbit was my very very first pet and ever since iv’e always had a pet rabbit. She hardly used her hutch since she was always loose in the apartment just like a cat or dog. My mom instantly fell in love with her too!! later I got a turtle, some love birds, a lizard, guinea pig, hamster and after that my mom said “we need a house” lol!! so we bought our first home with an extra room to keep all my pets, but my bunny still kept sharing a room with me ![]()
I was a student teacher at a preschool that had a pet rabbit when I was in college a year ago. I took him home for a few weekends and we fell in love with him, and a few weeks later I got my own little diva
I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to get the bunny from the preschool, it was a bad situation for hiim, and the teacher wasn’t particularly nice to me, and when the preschool closed she said I could keep him but then she said she was going to keep him until she opened her own preschool in fall 2011. I haven’t heard from her since and hope she hasn’t abandoned him somewhere or given him to a home that treats him badly. We really loved him
But at least he was able to introduce me/us to bunnies being pets! I couldn’t live without Dutchess Marie.
In my mid-twenties I stopped by a co-workers house, and she had a huge rabbit and a large cat just loose in her house/apartment. She had a cage with a mostly free-range bunny. That was my first encounter. Fast forward about 15 years and I’d moved far away from my nephews’ home, and they didn’t want me to be lonely, so got me a pet for my birthday when they came for a visit. They were allergic to cats, the landlord didn’t allow dogs (neither did I), so they got me a bunny since they saw them indoors at school. We went and found Spockie. I actually didn’t find Binky Bunny until 8 years later, a month after Spockie crossed the rainbow bridge.
