› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Sunny got neutered today
Everything supposedly went good today. I got to bring him home a few hours after surgery. He was given a pain med injection that should last ~24 hours. So far since being home, he has peed and pooed (sp?lol), and he has drank some water, but the only thing I’ve seen him eat is banana that I gave him. He won’t eat his veggies or har or pellets. I have also seen him lick his seagrass mat a few times, which I’ve never seen him do. He is still a lil dazed and confused though.
Here’s my question: Will it be ok if I leave his veggies there for him overnight just in case he decides to eat them? Or will they be no good left out for that long? Like if he doesn’t eat them until 5 in the morning, they will have been sitting out for like 10 hours…
They told me that if he does not end up eating soon that I can give him some baby food w/an oral syringe. But I think he wants to eat. He ate the banana (maybe because he knows it’s soft??)
I always find Sammy eating his veggies left overnight in the morning. I take them away and give him fresh ones but he’s never died from eating the ones left out overnight
LOL
How long has it been since you brought Sunny home? Sammy didn’t get back to eating his normal food until maybe 5 or 6 hours after I brought him home, maybe even slightly more. You probably want to keep him enclosed in his pen/cage for today and maybe the next 1 or 2 days to avoid him jumping on stuff too soon.
FYI, just in case this happens to you, I had a freak out about him licking his incision a lot, but it turned out it wasn’t that big of an issue and I was over-reacting. Your vet will most likely have used internal stitches and glue to keep the incision closed, so it’ll just look like skin folded in on itself, with a little redness. You can get sunny to stand up by putting a raisin over his head and place a mirror by his back feet so you can see his incision as he stands up. If he’s licking it or it looks slightly red don’t overreact like me though, he most likely will not be able to damage it ![]()
OOOH good idea about the mirror! I will try that tomorrow! I got him home, probably about 4.5 hours ago. I will leave his veggies out for him. I will check on him before I actually fall asleep, too, so it is possible he will have eaten something by then. I think tomorrow will be a better time to judge him.
They gave me three doses of liquid pain meds in oral syringes in case he needs them. I asked how to tell and they said he doesn’t seem like himself, like doesn’t want to get up and move or anything..? Does anyone else have anything to add to that so I’ll be able to tell if he is in pain?
Just so I don’t take credit for the mirror idea, I read it on this site
LOL
If it was Sammy, since I’m kind of crazy, I’d set an alarm for about halfway from when I’m going to sleep to when I wake up, so I don’t wait 7 or 8 hours to monitor him but monitor him ever 4 or so. But I think you should be okay doing the morning thing too. I’m just over-anxious.
I gave Sammy the pain meds the next morning just in case. He seemed okay but not great. Signs of pain are grinding his teeth, sitting in a hunched position, being lethargic and unwilling to move, not eating. If your rabbit isn’t eating yet by tomorrow morning I’d definitely do the pain meds and call the vet to see if you should give him some critical care or something like that.
Sammy actually liked the meds they gave him, so he licked them up willingly. Hopefully Sunny will be the same!
Thanks for the advice. Will update tomorrow!!
I can’t tell if he ate any hay throughout the night. His petite carrot was still in the bowl, as was lettuce. BUT he may have eaten a little bit of lettuce, I’m just not sure.
I gave him a small piece of banana a little bit ago and he ate it right up. I gave him a strand of oat hay and he ate that too, but that’s all. He didn’t eat anything else yet. Oh I forgot, he did start chewing on his seagrass rug, just a little bit though.
He very well could be in pain or just be uncomfortable, I dunno… I’m sure they didn’t give him his injection until about 9:30-10:30 yesterday morning, so if it really is a 24 hour thing, we still have a few hours to go.
***Edit: He just jumped in his litterbox and started eating oat hay! I also threw in a little western timothy I bought him yesterday and he ate some of that, too. Now he just turned around and started eating his alfala!. I think he is going to be A-OK!!

Now he’s really perking up and wants to come out of his cage!lol it’s hard not to let him. I know I have to wait at least 10 days before he can run and jump onto things, but how long do you think I need to wait just to simply let him out of his cage into a larger area (he really can’t run and there’s nothing to jump onto), ya know, like a small bathroom? I just think he likes to get out of his cage. It is our routine, anyway, he gets out as soon as I get up lol.
**edit: oh wow, I take that back, he is not only perking up, he is being a little terror! He is tossing everything he can possibly toss around in there! Can’t tell if he’s in pain or just wants out of there…. He tossed around the bowl with his veggies in it and yanked on one of the mats in there, tossed around his kong, digging another grass mat, BUT I just now saw him eating on his carrot…. silly bunnies!
It’s the jumping up onto platforms and things that causes the most harm. I would let him out to any room that doesn’t have something to jump onto. A bathroom is good, a hallway for a long run. Just keep him away from chairs, couches, beds, or platforms in any habitat. But if he’s feeling that well, he wants out so let him get a run. You can use a baby gate to block off a hallway if you have one.
When they’re in pain, they usually huddle in a meatloaf position and grind their teeth. It doesn’t sound like pain to me.
Awesome! Thanks for that. I will let him out into the computer room, but I will take away the things, or block off the things he can jump onto. Sometimes he wants out so badly, then he just sits under my chair while I’m sitting in it. lol
Glad to hear he’s doing well!
You don’t need to wait 10 days to let him jump on things. I called my vet after having confined Sammy for 3 days post surgery and he said “let him out already”. He said 2 days would have been fine.
lol @ “let him out already”
Sunny is doing GREAT, guys! I’m so happy about it. The papers they gave me were pre printed for like dog & cats lol, I will call monday and ask, as long as he’s still doing good by then.
I tried the mirror thing, and could only get a little glimpse of what’s going on there. Is it normal for the site to be a little swollen and dark, maybe even purplish colored? Like I said, I didn’t get a good look–he’s too fast, and he doesn’t like to be held in weird positions…
Did you use a treat? If you dangle it just out of reach he should stand up for a bit trying to get it.
My rabbit hates being picked up for held, but if I just lift his front legs gently and slowly (leaving his back legs on the ground), he lets me do that till I can have him in an almost standing position.
You could give that a shot, just do it slowly so he’s not spooked.
And if you then can’t see into the mirror another good option if you have a camera or camera phone is to take a quick pick of the area.
Sammy’s area was dark red, not necessarily all the way to purple. Not sure if your rabbit’s color as normal or not though so I’ll leave that to someone else to determine. If he’s acting like he isn’t in pain I’m sure it’s fine.

OK, FINALLY was able to get him to lay still for just a minute and was able to take a peek at him and snap a quick pic. He is still acting normal. No problems. Just wanted to see if this is normal or not? He got neutered on the 23rd.

hey, I’m not trying to be a pain by bumping, but is anyone willing to take a look at my rabbit’s goods and tell me if it’s normal 3 days after neuter to look like this?lol
No problem. I’ve always been warned to look for swelling and redness, which does not seem to be the case there, so I think he’s doing well.
If the discoloration changes by becoming larger, or looks inflamed, or if it seems to be more swollen as time goes on rather than less, that’s cause for a vet call. It’s more the progression from the initial day he’s home to what it looks like a few days later and so on. So if they become lighter in color, the fur fills in (looks pretty good that way too), and his behavior, appetite and poos are all normal, I’d say you’ve got a successful prognosis.
thank you so much! That is good to hear! Yes everything seems normal- his eating/drinking, pees/poos, he’s playing and acting like his ole’ self! I will keep an eye on them!
Hey sorry, just saw that you added this picture. To be honest, my rabbit’s nether regions did not look like this after his neuter. However, I think more of your rabbits fur was removed, so you can see the skin more, whereas with my rabbit I couldn’t see much of his skin, so that may be why it looks different.
You could call the vet and describe the incision area, or even, if they have an email address, send the vet office the pic you posted then call them to let them know to show it to the vet and call you back.
My vet included a checkup appointment post-surgery in the neutering cost, so I was able to bring Sammy in to be checked about a week after surgery, just to be sure. You could also call your vet to ask about that, just for peace of mind.
hey, good idea. i will email them. thanks for the suggestion!
I always recommend asking your vet if you have any questions about an incision. But from looking at the pic- what it looks like to me is that the scrotum (plural?) area is shaved or plucked in order for the area to be scrubbed and prepped for surgery. If boy pets are neutered and they are more mature (have larger testicles) it can take awhile for the sacs to reduce in size. Neutering involves removing the internal testicles and not the actual sacs- so sometimes that confuses people when they are looking to see what was done.
So from the pic- I am not sure I see the actual incision but the neuter site that was prepped by removing hair.
