› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Fiver update and Mimzy’s next vet app’t.
I’m currently at the end of Fiver’s meds. The metronidazole is not doing as well as it was when we first gave it to him. So I talked to the vet today and they want me to bring in a fresh stool/cecal sample to test and consider putting him on another round of the metro, plus adding the TMS as well.
I still see mushy poos (cecals) and sometimes just smears of brown liquid. Poor little guy, his hocks are getting stained again too and turning red, so I had to put HealRx on last night, even though he licks it off and my regular vet said it might cause more trouble with his bowels.
In the meantime, Mimzy is still peeing and pooping outside his box. He’s also developed a worse sneeze, right after he had his APD cookie treat this morning, he took one bite and went into a huge fit…continuous sneezing, no letup. I was afraid he wouldn’t be able to breathe. I find I can only partially soothe him by rubbing his face and ears a bit during one of these episodes.
The only thing I can think at this point is there MUST be a molar root going into his sinuses. There’s no other explanation unless it’s wholly environmental. He’s been laying with his head flat on the floor of his pen (a cool surface feels more confortable?) and tooth purrs loudly, or maybe it’s a grind I don’t know…but often after he eats something hard or purrs I will hear him suddenly go into one of these fits. I can’t think what else it could be and maybe now the little puddles I’m finding are because he sneezes so hard he loses control of his bowels. ![]()
He’s due for a checkup anyway, he’s 4 years old this spring. I want those rear legs looked at too to see if he’s developing arthritis.
So Sunday is the big day for him, then the next day I have to get up early and take my other cat in for a dental. It’s been expensive this month. LOTS of veterinary stuff. ![]()
I may be having my cat shaved while he’s under too…this is going to be weird…he won’t look right without all his fluff.
But he has such terrible hairballs. I’ll have to post a before and after in the Lounge.![]()
Awww…poor Mimzy & Fiver. Keep us updated.
Gee, MM, this is all coming at once. (I sent you a private email in the Message Center here. P.)
awwww poor little guys! Let us know what happens with the checkup!
So sorry to hear about both your rabbits being sick at once! I really hope they feel better soon. <>
****Hugs**** When it rains it pours in the pet owner’s world. I know all about that!!
(((((Get well Bunnies. Momma doesn’t like worrying!)))))))
We went into town yesterday and, as per the vet’s instructions, took a sample from Fiver to have it tested. They told me it would be about an hour, we had some shopping to do so I said we’d call back to see if he needed more meds.
So That was 4 PM…about 5:30 I’m finally done with my errands and nothing from the vet. I call them back since I know they’re going to close in about half an hour. The receptionist tells me they haven’t gotten to it yet. Huh?
I tell her I’m about to leave town and need to know, could they please run it, I know it takes 20 minutes…she suddenly switches me over to the lab tech who tells me it WAS tested and looks normal. HUHWHAT?
SO why is Fiver still having messy cecals and a brown liquid under them? It’s like he wasn’t treated at all. The tech intimated there was some ‘adjustment’ period now that he’s off the metronidazole. Does that make sense to anyone?
I don’t think they tested it in time or didn’t do it at all. Now if I want further treatment for him I’ll have to make a whole new appointment and start over form the beginning. What rot.
In the meantime we’ve had a raging blizzard hit us for the last two nights with no sign of letup till Saturday/evening. At least a foot of snow (more with the wind I’m sure) and 50 MPH gusts. Not typical for this time of year in the Interior, at least since I’ve lived here. We’ve lost power at least five or six tiems today and I can hear the gale screaming out there. 0_o
Please hold some good weather thoughts, I may have to drive Mimzy in by myself (I’m not the best at driving in snow) on Sunday due to my hubby having other commitments. I couldn’t postpone his appointment because next weekend the vet will be closed while they move their building.
On a better note, he doesn’t seem to have been peeing in his pen for the last few nights. I’m hoping it was just a territory thing or he was crabby with me for not getting up earlier.
Geez, MM, that’s awful. I think you need to talk directly to the vet, not the receptionist, not the tech. Just get on the phone with the vet and get a full explanation of whether the test was done, what it means that he is still doing this after the meds have run it’s course, and whether the VET needs to have you drive in this stuff to bring him in, or if you are safe to wait and watch him a few more days.
I am also wondering if all the bad weather and power outages are stressing him, which may add to his sketchy bowel movements. Let’s see how he does all day today, Saturday, and if his condition calms down a bit.
What’s with our bunnies, Mimz? They seem to give us a lot of problems..They know we are worriers and like to keep us on our toes! Bindi is on Baytril for a 7 week span..yup them ears again. And Stormy is worrying me very much because he doesn’t want to eat much hay (and he won’t eat the new pellets at all). I think I will be bringing him into the vet when I get Bindi re-checked. It’s very hard some times…
I’ll be talking to their regular vet Sunday. I’m taking in another sample. He’s still messy (dropped at least 3 cecal smears this morning alone) and since the storm messed up hubby’s plans he’ll be driving us to town tomorrow. Fiver had such bad gas last night I could hear his tummy gurgling across the room…I thought it was mine! 0_o Two doses of mylicon (.6ml each) put a stop to it in about two hours, but I felt so bad for him. Oddly, he was still spunky enough to come out of his pen for his meds, do some binkies and eat the fresh hay I handed him. Go figure. Maybe for him, tummy noises (even ginormous ones) are a good thing. He was the worst off when I could hear nothing at all, but those big ones spooked me a little last night.
Mimzy has had to deal with .6 ml of benadryl each night for the last three nights. It seems to help his stuffy nose fine, but doesn’t do anything for the rapid fire sneezing.
I know what you mean LPT. Even my little Yorkie has gurgling tum this morning…I’m looking up the dosage for mylicon for her now…will it never stop?? >.< (I'm going to blame daddy for feeding her too much steak.)
I hope Bindi and Stormy will be better soon. Funny, yeah, how it’s both our lops and our rexies. I assume the Divalicious Olivia is healthy as a horse, right? Pip is doing great but for another shed that’s making her cross, and even she’s left a few cecals the last few days. I have to overdo the oat hay when she’s shedding and sometimes it just gets to be too many calories, I think…or too coarse. Either way, she seems to shine through just fine no matter how bad off the boys get, thank God.
The storm is now over, boy it was sure still blowing last night and I couldn’t find my porch steps this morning! This means we’ll have very cold temps as the front clears out. -40’s F forecast for the next few nights…..yuck!
The buns have seen the power go out before, it doesn’t seem to bug them much. But at the start of the blizzard, Fiver was thumping in his pen early that morning and we had to assume it was because he could hear the wind howling outside. Poor bub.
Oi it is time for some good luck!!! I’m sending warmer better weather vibes your way
I know how those hard winds can keep you up-and power outages-yuck! Vibes to everyone and mother nature better send us all some better weather soon! ![]()
Thanks K&K!
I got a bit of a break, hub is not doing what he was scheduled for tomorrow and so will be driving me in. Phew.
It was so lovely outdoors, even with all the wind, since it was a southern gale and brought the temps up to almost 40 +F. Now the cloud cover is all gone and the temps are dropping so quickly that our beams are cracking. 0_o
I think everyone in North America is MORE than ready for spring to get here….wasn’t it supposed to be early, Mr. Groundhog?? ~_~
Yes it is. It’s starting tomorrow. I said so.
Good luck today.
Thanks Pam.
*peeks back outside* Sorry…no spring yet.
Well the verdicts are in:
Fiver-nothing wrong with his cecals as far as infections are concerned. My vet even said she thought they were formed correctly. (not, it was a slimy little ball of toothpaste-like goo, he hasn’t had a ‘grape cluster’ since he began the metronidazole, and that wore off quickly) I asked her if it could be his teeth causing tummy trouble and she said no. She suggested I shave his butt if he’s getting messy and just strive to keep him clean. *sigh*
Mimzy: urinalysis shows nothing wrong (two puddles in the pen this morning) and fecals are fine. (Fiver’s fecals too) But he does have molar spurs again, so he’s scheduled for a filing on March 7 with the vet who did Fiver’s last time. She was pretty good, I just was frustrated that she did not give pain meds, so I’ll have to be obnoxious and demand them for Mimz.
At that time he’ll have a blood test to determine he’s completely healthy, she said something about his urine density being possibly low, but not to worry about it. She’ll be checking his kidney levels on the CBC.
He had a nail trim which he was stellar for, (he sat still for the otoscope as well…wow!) with the exception of his left rear foot, which is the one that he holds funny and seems to be paining him more than the others. She agreed he is getting older and that may be why.
So I guess I just give Mimzy benadryl when he gets really snotty and wheezy and hope for the best with his filing. I realized he is truly grinding his teeth more lately, as he did a purr for me last night that was so quiet I could barely hear it. I mentally compared it with one of the louder grinds and I’m glad my suspicions about his teeth were confirmed. Otherwise I think the hub would’ve been more put out than he already was, as he is allergic to the fur to a point now that he can’t even be in the car with the animals without sneezing, barring Jenna who does not set him off at all.
And oh goody…another early trip in tomorrow with my kitty…oh boy oh boy. >.< They're BOTH gonna be HATIN' me! 0_o;
Sounds like you’ll have to feed the hubby some benadryl too
I hope Mimzy’s issues are just him getting older and lazier, not something hiding in the bloodwork.
MM- there is a brand new product out that I would recommend that you ask your vet about. I just saw the company rep and when I mentioned recommending Cosamin/Cosequin to rabbit owners online- he told me their company has a new rabbit product out. So new that he did not have samples. I have NOT talked to my vets about the product and they have not ordered it yet. It is not prescription as none of their products are- they are known for their outstanding high quality human and vet supplements.
I would have your vet research this. They should be able to order it and get it in- or you might find someone that is already carrying it.
If I had a rabbit with mushy poos- I would look into this. I can’t hurt to ask your vet what they think about it.

Our groundhog predicted a late Spring and boy is he right! We got over 40 cm Saturday and another 10-20 coming today. There’s no place to put this stuff. I was at my Mom’s yesterday and my nieces were outside playing in the snow. They were having fun running back and forth on the roof since the snow in the backyard is as high as the roof!!
Yup, Mims. Your right. Olivia is healthy as a horse (knocking on wood…). I’ve had way less problems with her than my boys. Maybe she’s just tougher than the boys.
