I was wondering how many of you take your furballs for vet checkups?  just for a well visit?  I am contemplating since mine are just over a year and we’re moving to another state…I figured get a good lookover and perhaps a recommendation for a good vet where I’m going?

I know vet bills are never cheap…but of course I would do it if it’s in their best interest…

So is it recommended to take them periodically or is it just more as they get up in their years that it’s a good idea?  My two are still babies…

        Thanks!

I always do and always have. Today Peaches and Peppermint are in for their annual.

The reason I recommend doing this is that first and foremost you can start having a relationship with the vet and the vet staff in case of an emergency. And also the vet can check their weight, their teeth, their eyes, their ears. The exams will be a good reference for the vet as well in case their is a reason to take them in when they are ill or there is an emergency.

This is just my philosophy and it has worked very well for me in my relationship with my vet and the staff.

It took me 3 vets to find one I am comfortable with. I know you may already know this but a good vet answers all of your questions and doesn’t rush you. I go to a vet that someone on here recommended me and I wouldn’t trust going to another.

Even if your bunnies are young, a yearly exam is good to do! My bunny suffered ear yeast infections at 6-8 months of age. Other vets couldn’t figure it out and the one I see now did everything she could do and she figured out the issue

            Good luck finding a vet!

Thanks guys…and I do have a great vet right now..just that I’ll be moving out of state and won’t be able to see him anymore… So I checked out the HRS site and found some in the area where I’ll be moving, but I would think it would be good if I could get a recommendation from my current vet.

Mine both have been there for their spay/neuter, and also for a stasis emergency with Oreo. So I definitely know it’s important to have a good one! Thanks Brittany and very good point Sarita..I’ll have to start over from scratch once I move though. It should be permanent though, so hopefully I can find a good one.

I think taking them in is a good idea…plus I’ll get a free nail clipping out of it!

              Thanks!

I took both of mine as soon as I got them and they also go once a year for a wellness exam. The vet has never had a problem with Otto, but on Hannah’s first visit they found that she had molar spurs (she wasn’t showing any symptoms other than being a light eater). Now I’m happy to take her back once a year so I’ll be able to catch the problem if it returns. Even though Otto’s never had any issues, I think it’s worth it to take him just for peace of mind.

eta: I going to be moving soon (as soon as I find a house at least) so I’m in a similar boat and I know how hard it can be to leave a great vet for the unknown! My current vet is half an hour from my house and we’ll be moving at least a half hour in another direction, so it’ll just be prohibitive to continue with our old vet They’re fantastic and I’m not looking forward to finding a new one! Good luck with your search.

I agree with Sarita. Also, because bunnies are so good at hiding their illnesses, I think annual check ups are a good idea. Than they can catch things on an apparently healthy bun.

I would definitely recommend a wellness exam right after you move to establish yourself with a new vet. If you want to try different vets to find one you like, you could have one go to one new vet, and the other go try a different vet. Then take both to the one you like the best in several months for a checkup. If there’s a chronic condition, it’s most important to really like your vet and go more often. Otherwise, I’m doing the once a year wellness exam.

I just moved for the first time since getting Riley. One thing I would recommend would be to get a copy of all your records from your current vet before you move – my vet was awesome and gave me copies of all my pets records, which I now have in an accordion file so that each pet has his/her own file with their vet records and any other info I have on them.

This worked out great for me, because a week after moving here one of by birds had an egg laying issue and I ended up having to take her in to a vet here – the vet was so impressed that I was able to pull out her file and every vet record I had.

Great points everyone. I think RabbitPam you’re right on with waiting…we’re moving next month so I’ll try to get an appointment once we’re settled.

Elrohwen, thanks…good luck with your move too! It’s a stressful process!! I am hoping my two handle the transition well. They did great when we moved them into my parents’ house…but this time they’ll be subjected to at least a 2 hour drive to get there…
