› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › weak immune system? [me, not the buns haha]
it seems lately I’ve had this permanent cold. I’m only 23 so I swear my health can’t be in THAT bad shape… but I’ve had this cough for weeks and there’s days when I wake up and feel out of it. I try and rest some days but then a few days later it just goes back to square one. It’s not like I’m feverish, so I don’t really want to go to a doctor [funny how I’ll bring the buns to the vet with no hesitation, but I’m one of those people who just hates going to the doctor myself lol]. Should I up my vitamin C intake? does anyone else go through this?
Haha, I can totally relate. When I get sick, I end up coughing for a month or two afterwards too. If you started out with a cold of some kind, opportunistic bacteria could have taken up residence in your lungs while your immune system was busy, resulting in a lingering secondary bronchitis. A good sign is a productive cough with icky looking phlegm, in which case a dose of antibiotics is in order unless you want to tough it out. I’m also the same way with taking myself to the doctor as opposed to taking my buns to the vet…I guess I feel like I can gauge my own health a lot better, but who knows what’s happening/how my buns feel when they get sick! Better safe than sorry when it comes to my buns, but I can tough it out if it’s just me, lol. Ironic that I’m lazy about going to the doctor though I’ll be one myself in a few years!
If it has been that long, it’s best to go in, if only to get some antibiotics. Why risk your health, if it can be avoided? Plus, I bet the buns would appreciate it if Mom didn’t feel like crap when going out to get noms for them
If you don’t want to go in, up the vitamin C, take some echinacea, some multi vitamins, and relax a bit. Veg on the couch, take naps, let the body heal. ![]()
You’re not asthmatic are you? There are different types of asthma. I have seasonal asthma that my allergies build up mucus in my longs and I will cough all of the time but I wasn’t sick.
If it’s not asthma, then you may just have a chest cold you can’t shake.
I’m 21 and work and have worked at a preschool for 3 years almost and my immune system is still somehow weak. Definitely go to the dr though to get it checked out.
Going on 6 weeks of coughing….I feel your pain. I don’t know what to do either.
Bleh.
A doctors visit and… ester-c.
My dad reads mens health (and me womens health) and he said the magazine’s higly recommended vitamin c is ester-c.
It worked for me. I was feeling the early cold symptoms and I took ester-c and my cold was very light. Normally I get sick bad but get over it within a few days (thanks to nyquil), but I believe vitamin c does help.
Have you tried a womens multi vitamin? I pop at least 4 different vitamins daily, a multi, b12, fish oil, and fiber. You don’t need to take a bunch but a multi vitamin is a good supplement
there are gummy type ones too!
Feel better!

Have you been tested for allergies?
It seemed like I was always getting colds, and then because of all the coughing they would turn into bronchitis and it would mean a few more weeks of being miserable. It would clear up just in time to get the next cold. Turned out they weren’t colds, they were allergies. Because I tested positive to so many airborne allergens I take 2 allergy medications twice a day – one in the morning and one at night. Since then I still get colds now and then but at least I know they’re actual colds. And when I don’t take my allergy meds for a while I can definitely feel the difference. I’m all stuffy and coughing and feel sluggish.

brittany – yeah, I think I seriously need to start taking vitamins lol. thanks for all the suggestions! I’m going to head to the shop today.
Annette- you know, I do have really bad seasonal allergies so maybe I should actually ask a doctor to test them. I never knew you could do that! haha. I thought it was a lost cause and I spend all my money on zyrtec and stuff. thanks so much for the input!
Something else to consider would be heartburn or digestive issues. That could cause coughing as well.
You can also try an elimination diet… no wheat, sugar, soy, milk for a week, so how you are, add one category back in a little bit, etc. etc. It’s a pain to do, but a pretty good gauge of how you react to certain foods.
About the vitamin C – make sure not to superdose it! That’ll cause stomach upset for sure.
You should also make sure you’re taking Vitamin D (get the gel capsules) and calcium. The vitamin B’s also work well if you’re feeling bleh.
Feel free to PM me if you want – I worked in the industry for 7 years, and I’ve got lots of health issues in general lol so I feel like I’m pretty well versed after all of the doctor appointments I’ve had!
Darn my double post LOL!!!!!
Cainan, I absolutely agree. I take vitamin B12 and I feel energized ![]()
another side note – sublingual B12 is better than the pill form. ![]()
I ditto the thoughts on asthma, environmental & food allergies. All those things came to mind when reading your post.
It certainly won’t hurt to go see a doctor if you haven’t yet. There may be a bug around this season that you’re not aware of. A vitamin B injection might be the way to go if you’re feeling particularly rundown.
