I kind of fell in love with this bunny on craigs list from some guy in a near by city. I know there are lots of bunnies at shelters, but this was almost love at first sight.. in his ad, its almost like this guy just wants to get rid of this rabbit since he listed it as free and he doesn’t seem to care too much where it ends up. The bunny lives in a tiny store bought cage with wire flooring. He seems to take up about almost half of the cage. All that is inside is a bowl of pellets.

I would like to do a trial run with the bunny, but from the vibe I get with his ad, there are probably no returns.. So if my Totoro and this craigs list bunny don’t end up getting along, I get stuck with 2 lonely bunnies… I would love the other bunny regardless… but the whole point is since I am gone about 10-12 hours a day because of work, I wanted to get Totoro a buddy.

Facts about the other bunny: Netherland dwarf 1.5years old, male, originally bought from a bredder, gray, very cute, I know you cant always judge a book by is cover, but the bunny does look kinda docile.

Facts about my Totoro: Mixed “mini lop” although he is kind of on the hefty side.., will be 3years old in May, male, gets along with many types of animals, but I haven’t seen him interact with any other rabbits except when I bought him at the mall (I know, bad!, but at the time I knew almost nothing about rabbits, but sites like these and books and videos helped a lot and now he is kinda spoiled living in a huge condo while I sleep and am at work, and roams while I am home. Hes been around 3 cats for over a year now.. the cats will be going back to my mom this weekend actually I was watching them as she did some remodeling at the house. He never was bothered by the cats, the cats would hiss sometimes, but never attacked him, BUT when the cats got too curious and when in his condo he started Thumping like crazy. The first year I had him he was around a LARGE dog at my work. When I first bought my bunny I was scared to leave him alone so my boss let me bring him to work. The dog (bermese moutain dog) never barked at Totoro and would even sit next to his cage and Totoro would smell him and sit next to him not afraid at all. Totoro is very approchable and he will come right up to strangers. He is very curious and I think he could get along with another bunny, but I don’t know if another bunny would reciprocate the love.

I haven’t contacted the person yet… I worry too much so I don’t end up making a decision because end up talking myself out of it each time with all the cons outweighing the pros.

Should I just leave the craigs list bunny alone.. or should I go for it? I have been very hesitant in finding Totoro a buddy because I am afraid the other bunny just wont get along with my sweet Totoro, but I have been contemplating about this for quite some time now. I have done my research on how to introcude them and how to start the bonding process (mostly all my info from here!).
        what should i do?

Is there a good rabbit rescue organization where you live? If you are mainly concerned about the welfare of the bunny (and there is good reason to be concerned; “free” craigslist bunnies run the chance of becoming snake food!) you could take the bun and redirect it to a rabbit rescue or foster home to ensure that it will have a good future. If you really want a friend for Totoro, you could then take Totoro into the shelter/rescue for bunny dating, maybe even with the craigslist bunny! Best of luck to you and the buns

Thanks, but the rabbit is gone already. I guess I waited too long to think about it. I just hope he went to a good home. I definately want to set Totoro up on dates. I’ll contact my shelter to arrange something..

I adopted Hannah off of Craigslist, though her owner did care about her very much and wanted a good home for her. I was able to work out a meeting where we went to Hannah’s home and let the bunnies meet. Otto had already met a number of other buns and I knew how he got along with them (he gets along with anybunny) so I kind of knew what I was looking for what we met Hannah. They were fine together for at least 20min before there was some humping and chasing and after that we took Hannah home. I did have a brief period of regret, I’ll admit it – Hannah is very active and the first couple days she was digging and chewing everything for 6 hours straight. I was worried she wouldn’t fit in with our home, but she ended up being a fantastic bunny and bonding took only a couple weeks.

I definitely understand that you can fall in love with a bunny not at a shelter (we really wanted a lop and there were none that fit our needs). However, I would absolutely recommend that your bun meets this new bun first to make sure they’re not at each other’s throats. It can also help if you have a bunny date or two first so you know what to look for. Good luck!

eta: I should’ve read the whole post – I just saw that the rabbit is gone. That’s ok! You’ll find another! I was going to add that trying to meet with an un-fixed bun can be hard, so definitely check out the shelters and things. You’ll find one.
