bah, my long detailed post got lost during posting.

Let me ask the brief version though – is tryng to bond a baby (male or female) to a 3 year old  (female) a bad idea?

I don’t think it’s recommended since the baby will get hormonal eventually. I have tried it sort of, with a gate between pre-neuter Panko and spayed Lago. Lago wasn’t aggressive, but I waited until Panko was neutered and non-hormonal to put them together. Their bond was instant I guess because he was around before.

I was afraid this was the answer. I’m considering finding a buddy for Merry, and her former foster home just got in 3 mini rex babies and I LOVE mini rexes! They also have a mother but she’s not ready to be adopted out yet. *sigh*

I once brought home a baby girl and after the 14 day introduction period, put her with my two neutered males. If I can use human terms, they loved her so much so that they would jostle each other in order to be able to lay next to her. She was quite often the filling in the sandwich. Unfortunately, she died during her spay but I have no doubt the bond would have held after her surgery. I haven’t yet received into my home a rabbit that couldn’t be bonded with the rest of the crew. Because my rabbits are house bunnies (not to be confused with the dust bunnies around here) cages are not an option and everybody has to get along. If the bunny being introduced has just been spayed/neutered, it is best to wait 2-3 weeks minimum after surgery before attempting a bond since it takes a while for all the hormones to leave the system. I wouldn’t write off the idea just yet . . .

Thanks Wendy! Makes me feel better because I just saw a video of these sweeeeeeeeeeeet little babies and I’m really hooked!
I talked to Foster Mom and she thought it would be a possibility. I’ll be meeting these cuties and re-meeting the two adults I’m considering in a few weeks and we’ll see what Merry has to say!

If you’re going to do it, it probably would work, you might just have to wait until after the baby is neutered. I would ONLY get a baby if it’s a male. You can neuter sooner (about 4 months) and there’s less of a chance of the bond not working afterward. Two females very often spell TROUBLE.

Thanks – he’s definitely a boy – and the two adults I’m considering are boys too. (well I guess they’re men now lol!)
                    He’s 10 or 11 weeks old now I think.

What kind of bunny is the baby? Talk to your vet too, I know my vet has said spay/neutering is also based upon size.. as in larger breeds can be speutered younger. But see what your vet recommends/comfortable with age and breed of speutering.
