Yesterday evening Bumblebunny ate  his greens and about 9pm I gave him his pellets. This morning I noticed he had not eaten the pellets and he did not touch his morning  greens.  He did however come running for a small timothy treat.  At noon he ate few carrot tops and about a half teaspoon of sliced carrot but did not touch his morning greens. He seems only interested in chewing on his willow ball and willow basket and he did eat a few willow leaves  that he was offered and he seems to nibble an occasional piece of hay.  He is using the litter box regularly and is actively exploring when he is out.  He does spend a few minutes sitting in a corner, but then explores some more.  This behavior is a first for him. He did have an annual check-up about a month ago and the vet said he was in great health. Should I remove the ball and basket and just leave greens and hay in his home?

I will call the vet tomorrow if he does not start eating more regularly.

A bunny will eat periodically throughout the day. Unlike dogs who inhale it all in one sitting, a bunny may leave a meal for hours sometimes, but eventually you’ll find all or most of it gone. If he is filling up on hay or hay substitutes like willow, that’s actully fine. I ahve seen Sammy leave her breakfast of greens all day, then eat them around supper time and ask for more. He will settle into a routine eventually, but he may already be in the habit of eating when you’re not around as much, so might be full shortly before the greens arrive. As long as he’s pooping and peeing regularly, and is drinking his water, I think you can continue as is. Don’t remove the ball and basket – they’re good for his teeth, too.

Oh, and sometimes they just reject that day’s greens menu. Might be a bit soggy or stale or looked up at him from the bowl in a funny way. Finicky buggers.

Did you recently open a new bag of pellets?
