Friday evening and Saturday Aspen was VERY active during the morning and evening, but she napped most of the afternoon. This morning she came out some, while I cleaned her litter pan out, swept up her cage, and fed her, she only stayed out for about 20 minutes, then went back to her cage and stayed there, then this evening when I opened her cage to sweep up her pellets and feed her her lettuce and parsley she ate then went back to her litter pan and laid down. She doesn’t even want to come out. I got a carrot piece and she came out, got it, and took it back to her cage to eat it.  I’m really concerned that somethings not right. She doesn’t like anyone touching her when she’s in her litter pan, so I don’t want to be pushy towards her, and make her angry, Should I be concerned? Should I maybe call the vet. I would like to look into her litter pan to see if she’s pooping ok… I guess I will have to get her to move so I can see. She’s eating normally, she drinks from a bowl, so I’m not sure really how much she drinks, but I can tell when she has because her little chin is wet, I rinse it out and replace that with fresh every morning. Is this normal new bunny behavior? am I just worrying myself over nothing? I’m sure they have “down” days just like we do… but I would like to know if there’s anything I should look for, or if I’m right to be concerned and I need to take her to be seen.

        Thanks so much!

          Hi,
It’s possible that she is not well, and it is important that you monitor her behavior closely and be prepared to take her to the vet in the morning.
I actually want you to check her litter pan for poos, and if you go into it knowing she usually objects, how she responds will be a good indicator of whether she’s just feeling low energy or is really ill. If she lets you, or moves very little out of the way, or growls but doesn’t object very much, she’s probably ill. Is she grinding her teeth? That is an indication of pain also.

But if she has normal poos, and is jumpy and feisty and mad at you for going in there near her (in whatever way you usually see her behave when you invade her box) than that is actually a good sign. If she’s just lethargic and won’t move, you may want to call an emergency vet. Keep her drinking, give her hay. The hay will move what’s in her gut, and it’s possible that she will have a big, smelly bowel movement then be suddenly energized again. The next few hours should determine a lot. Also, listen to her belly and see if you hear gurgling, or see her rippling, which could be gas. You can massage her tummy, and if you seem to detect gas, she might take a small dose of simethicone – the kind used for babies.

Keep us posted. You can’t be too worried when a bunny is acting funny – they hide illness until it’s critical.

Thanks RabbitPam! She moved for me, and she has been pooing and peeing. I changed the bedding and hay this morning, so I know that any poo’s are from today. She’s eating hay now, and she’s eaten some pellet this evening as well I noticed. I will definitely be watchful, and if anything changes for the worse I will take her to the vet first thing in the morning. Her previous owner did say she’s kind of a lazy bunny… so maybe all that activity was just from being in a new place and now she’s finally relaxed.I’m getting the material to make her new cage tomorrow, hoping to get it together tomorrow evening, but if she’s not feeling well it will be postponed, I don’t want to make anything worse.

That’s promising. Just keep an eye as you said and see how she behaves in the morning. Bunnies can be vigorous little babies and incredibly lethargic adults, then suddenly popcorn into the air when you least expect it. They do it to make us crazy. It works.

I wouldn’t worry about a “lazy” day too much unless there are other signs of ill health or repeated lazy days. My lop, Bindi, comes out every evening for a run. Some nights he is insane, doing binkies, zooms, hopping up and down off the couches, etc. and then the very next night he will just wander around for a couple minutes and then lay down. He really goes back and forth between crazy hyper and lazy. At first I was quite concerned but eventually I realized that he was just like me: some days full of energy some days a couch potato.

Well I’m happy to report that Aspen is doing GREAT today! she’s been MUCH more active, and she now has a bigger cage! Which I really think she’s enjoying! for roughly $20 I was able to get some wood (cut at the store) and some vinyl tiles and upgrade her cage! I got it all finished up this afternoon. She’s now enjoying her new “ledge”!

We require pics of said cage, with said bunny inside enjoying it. Numerous pics.

I promise I will get those up tomorrow… I’ve also posted about it in the “habitat & toys” section, so I will probably post them there, but for now, I MUST study, and get some school assignments done, so please don’t hit me with a stick… they will be up tomorrow for certain!
