so for some reason, my buns have decided they are no longer litter trained! I cleaned out their cage today and there was hardly any urine in their pan, instead it looks like they’ve been urinating on the bedding in their cage. they also pooped in the cage too. I don’t get why they’re doing this since they were doing great before haha. I keep them in an x-pen now so maybe since their cage isn’t their sleeping ground and whatnot they decided to expand their bathroom? at least they’re still doing their business inside their cage haha.

By bedding, do you mean there is some litter stuff lining the cage? Or bedding as a blanket?

If bedding is everywhere in the cage, it will confuse them. They must think it is litter and they can poop and pee on it Were they fully potty trained before their habits went naughty? I would just keep the litter in the box..

yeah it’s so weird! this is how their cage has been forever. haha. they were totally potty trained before this, they left mountains of poop in their litterbox and they were excellent and peeing in the box. are they being rebellious teen buns or something? lol.

Yes, generally you don’t want to have bedding in the cage, only in the litterbox. Sounds like you may need to do a litterbox refresher course.

I don’t think they’re being rebellious at all – they just think that if there’s bedding on the floor of the cage it must be one giant litter box. Just remove the bedding from the bottom of the cage and I’m sure they’ll stop peeing there.

Hannah never pees outside her litter box unless there is hay all over the cage floor – then peeing on the cage floor seems to be fair game.

Could be something like that. Jersey seems to view the rabbit room as one big toilet. Grrrr!

I agree with the others, may as well get rid of the bedding & see if that helps. Also would help save a few pennies.

                          old towels, blankets?
Many rabbits like the bare floor anyway. What do they hang out on most when in their pen?

Just wanted to share that Eddie used his whole cage as a litter box. Oh man the battles we had. He used to piss me off so bad. LOL I’d clean his area all up and he’d flick – I kid you not – litter and poop 3 FEET outside his cage. GRRRR And I’d have a separate litter box for him, but he’d just go everywhere in his cage even thought I just put litter in his box.

And now, what Brittany said makes total sense of his behavior. I got Eddie at Petco and he came “litterbox” trained. Well when he was Petco, they used carefresh in his enclosure. He had a litterbox too but they used carefresh as bedding, so he just went wherever. So when I brought him home, he did the same thing. I finally gave up trying to get him to just use a litterbox and not his whole cage. I had his cage attached to a pen so he wasn’t even using the cage for much except pee/poop and to get a drink from his water bottle. I was much happier after I just gave up. lol

And Lolli. Lolli used to pee on any fabric I gave her. But I put a fleece blanket over her maze haven and all she does is do her lazy pooping on it. Huh? lol Her water bottle was leaking and i put a towel down and she peed on that. But I guess since she sleeps on/in the fleece blanket, she won’t pee on it. ?????

I have no help really except that if they don’t use their cage for anything except to potty, maybe turning it into a whole litter box will solve your problems and frustrations. lol

@jerseygirl their area is covered in carpet, so maybe I’ll get some more scrap pieces and put that in their cage =]

@bunbuns1 yeah, their cage basically is their huge litterbox now since they’re always out in the pen hahaha -___-

I wouldn’t put anything down for right now. They won’t think it’s un-comfy, especially since most rabbits like the cool plastic. Your guys have plenty of space outside of the cage, so they’re not forced to be in there if they don’t think it’s comfortable enough.

Once they’ve proven they can use the litter box you can put down fleece or something. I like to get a yard of fleece and cut it into three pieces that approximately fit the cage. Though I don’t bother anymore because Hannah just pees on them.

                                  Rabbits can be complex! lol

They’re funny with some surfaces. I find I can put mats or towels down in some areas with no trouble yet in others, they will immediately poo and pee on it. It can take some time to find what we can and can’t get away will – according to them.
