One of my bunny’s been having bouts of GI Stasis so often that I feel it’s become a chronic problem. He had his first bout at 3.5 mths, and maybe 6 bouts since that first one. He’s now 5.5 mths. I’m quick to notice so fortunately he’s pulled through. Anyone have a similar problem, and if so, what do you do to prevent it/treat it/etc.

Additional Info: his diet (according to a very rabbit-saavy vet) is perfect- mostly hay, 1/8 pellets a day, no sugary foods, we had veggies, but vet thgt it’d be a good idea to stop them till we get to the bottom of this. We’ve done an xray, nothing. Blood work, nothing. Can’t figure out what might be causing it.

In my experience, its usually the pellets that cause the gut problems more often than the veggies. What kind of pellets, veggies and hay is he getting?

He gets Oxbow pellets, oxbow timothy, and in terms of veggies, it varies from romaine to parsley to cilantro, arugula, dandelion, etc. etc.

with him being so young till, you may want to lower the variety of veggies, and test them one by one, to see how each affects him. It could be one particular veggie that does it

Have you had a fecal test for him to check for coccidia?

I agree that it would be good to just stick with pellets and hay for now if that is what your vet is recommending.

I can relate. My Mini-Rex used to have frequent stasis, we almost lost him a few times and spent hundreds on vet bills. I tried a lot of different things but what seemed to work was drastically reducing pellets. My vet is very anti-pellets and told me to give him only a sprinkle; like croutons on a salad. He was getting about the same as yours; maybe a bit less than 1/8 cup. Bunnies don’t really need pellets if they are getting enough fiber and veggies. My lop got stasis once in a while too so I reduced everyone’s pellets and it really seems to have helped. They only get about 1/4 teaspoon sprinkled on their veggies; 2 meals a day. I know your bunny won’t be impressed but it’s for the best if he’s having health issues. Some bunnies just can’t handle the carbs from a lot of pellets.  Of course, with him being so young, you should discuss any diet changes with your vet first.

                  How much does he weigh?

If you haven’t had a fecal test done I also recommend that. GI stasis is more a symptom of another problem. Good idea to test for intestinal parasites, especially in a young bunny.

I have 1 bunny who also has chronic GI Stasis. It sounds like his diet’s good, but could there be anything else he’s ingesting that’s causing the problem? Maybe carpet or chewing on the baseboards? I give my bunny canned pumpkin as soon as I see he’s gtting GI Stasis and it seems to help. My vet said pumpkin’s great for rehydrating their intestinal tract and getting things moving again. Good Luck!

I think it was Binky Bunny’s Jack that had an unusual chronic problem that resulted in his being taken completely off one of his staple foods (pellets?) to get him regular again. some bunnies just don’t handle certain foods well, no matter how healthy the food is or they are otherwise. You could email her via the message center to ask if she has any pointers. I think her bunny Bailey used to have odd GI issues as well, so she’s had some experience in this department.

I really hope that these issues will ease once he gets older. I always think that he’s just getting adjusted cuz he’s still so young.

Sarita: i don’t think it’s the veg. it doesn’t get triggered when i switch around the veg. but anyway, my vet’s told me to stop as a precaution
puffytail: he weighs around 1.8 kgs. coming up to 6 months now.
jerseygirl: will ask vet’s advice. thanks =)
Daniellef: He’s really good about not chewing anything that he’s not supposed to. but will def ask my vet about canned pumpkin. thanks for the suggestion
Pam: My vet’s started him on a diet regime, and we’re going to try adding and taking away things one by one to try to figure out what the issue is, and whether it’s related to food

All in all, his last bout was a week and a half ago. Hopefully nothing comes up in the next little while. cross my fingers.

Has he had any xrays done?

@puffytail: as mentioned we’ve done xrays, bloodwork, and actually a urine test recently which showed nothing.

if nothign is showign up in any tests or xrays, seems to me that its likely a food intolerance of some sort. hope you can figure out what food isn’t agreeign with your baby
