Hi, im new here im pretty desperate let me try and make this short. My name is Ava and I live in central america with my parents we recently moved here from the U.S. we used to live in California but my dad had to move out here do to buisness. Anyways we have been living here for about 1 year already. I was really mad at first since it was a big change, but im getting used to it. 6 months into living here i got a rabbit, she is maybe around 1 yr. old, my dad’s co-worker gave it to him and he thought it would be a nice gift for me, the co-worker gave it to him since she had given birth to 4 litters in a short period and yeah he couldnt handle it anymore. Anyways I named her Sweet Apple, i call her Sweetie for short. Couple months later I got  another rabbit, and it turned out to be a male I got him at 2 months his name is Nanner and he bonded with Sweetie very well they would groom eachother non-stop, needles to say when he began mounting her I had to separate in fear that he would get her pregnant. so they live in separate cages now. After I got ANOTHER rabbit (i  know, that was a bad move), let me explain how I ended up with Mango a male by the way, i went over a friends house who is actually central american, when i arrived to her house i learned we would be having rabbit for dinner ugggh they love to rabbit meat here, anyways turns out when i went out to their field I saw Mango, I knew he would end up being dinner in the future and i felt soooooooooooooo bad so I asked my friend if I could have him. So i have 2 males and a female. Mango got along just fine with sweetie but Mango and Nanner hate eachother guts! All three are NOT fixed, I know i need to find a way to do this, but Im living in a country where rabbits arent considered pets rather dinner Vets arent something you see around here and is pretty dificult trying to find a reliable vet who knows what they are doing. So giving this summary I would like to know  the following:

        1) How can I bond Nanner and Mango?? i know them not being fix is gonna be a BIG issue in this but my parents dont want so many cages in the house so I would really like for Mango and Nanner to be able to live together and have playtime together. Is bonding two in tact MALE bunnies even possible?!!

        2) I Know female rabbits have a high risk of getting uterine cancer if unspayed does this also apply to female buns that have had litters?? (please, say no, i would be super worried, and its really hard to do something like that here)

        3) Is there an age where female rabbits CANT reproduce anymore, i would really like for Swettie, Nanner, and Mango to hang out together one day  i cant leave them together right now because that would mean Sweetie getting pregnant and my parents wouldnt be so happy with that and would probably make me give Sweetie away with her kits and I know EXACTlY how they would end up

PLEEEASE SOME ADVICE AND ANSWERS PLEASE!!! I really dont want to have to give my bunnies away.

Well, this is going to be tough 😮

Is Nanner a boy or a girl? I would consider keeping a female and male apart from each other. Female rabbits will always have the ability to reproduce, I am sorry to say that. Even to females that have had litters. Female rabbits can be impregnanted right after giving birth.

I am not so sure about boy-boy bonding, but I do know there are other members that have bonded males.

I am hoping that you can find a vet in your area. I am not sure about the circumstances or how veternarians operate there, but is there a phonebook or any vets in the city that you live in? I don’t have experience in other countries and their vet care, but I HOPE that you find one!! It will make you and your bunnies lives easier!

I don’t think this is going to be any easy task for you

Unfortunately, females who have had litters have the same likelihood of developing uterine cancer as those who don’t. Also, male bunnies naturally stake out and defend their territories as they reach sexual maturity, so as long as those hormones are present, they will be vicious in defending what they see as “their” turf. Do you mind saying the area you’re located? Maybe somebody might be able to find a vet for you.

It may be a tough situation, but kudos for trying to stick up for your buns!

From what I know, females can get pregnant even late in their life, but it could kill them doing so. And yes… females that have had litters can get uterine cancer. i believe the chance is higher in fact.

The chances of the un-neutered boys bonding is extremely slim. Normally I would say don’t even bother trying. i would say try your best findign a vet, as that is the best thing you can do for them, getting them all fixed.

Nanner and Mango are both males, Sweetie (Sweet Apple) is girly-girl. We could probably go to like a big major city which would be San Salvador, we live in el salvador, as some of you may know Salvador isnt a big country and resources here like vet care are scarce. I’ve learned that many people here actually vaccinate their OWN pets, they go to a farm supply store and buy the vaccination their pets may need which their main concern is rabies. This was completely new to me. I went over a classmates house and actually saw her mom vaccinating their dogs and cats. So different from united states =( We currently live in a three story house and ive mangaged to keep all 3 buns separated. Swettie sleeps with me in my room, Mango sleeps in the 2nd floor in an indoor porch we have and Nanner sleeps downstairs in the family room. The only way i can see to get them safely neutered is if i take them back with me to california when i go in the summer. But i dont know if my parents are gonna wanna pay for the transport of 3 buns.

Im getting really dissapointed at this point i was really hoping their would be a way to bond the 2 males, bonding them to Sweetie is the easy part, they already like her. Im not even sure if they allow for bunnies to be transported from international countries.

                    Welcome

You are in a difficult situation I’m afraid. Do not put unfixed rabbits together, they will fight and it can be vicious.
I believe you really only have a couple choice here if your parents are not open to you housing them all separately.

                    1) keep looking for a vet that can spay & neuter the rabbits. I was going to suggest taking them to the States if at all possible. I’m happy to see you’ve considered this. Maybe there would be a visiting vet from the States that could perform the procedure also?

                    2) rehome some of your rabbits. I know this would be difficult. It’s very easy to become attached to them. You may find someone else who wants them as a pet only.

As you have discovered, there are regions around the world (including in my own country) where rabbits are viewed as stock. I’m afraid you likely will come across more situations like you did with Mango. Be careful about this as you may end up with more rabbits.

I’m sorry I can’t offer more hopeful advice.

Edit to add: You are doing well in their current housing arrangement. I hope your parents will support you in continuing this.

That would be because they want to mate. It only takes seconds and in a month you’d have more rabbits then you know what to do with.

I meant to add, uterine cancer is not the only risk in older Does. They can also get mammary tumors and other conditions in the sex organs. It is just that uterine carcinoma is the most common.  Again, I’m sorry to sound so negative, it’s important to know the risks though.

Is there any possible way a bunny can heal from a spay in 2 weeks?? My dad will be leaving to the states in 4 days, he could probably take sweetie with him and I can make the appt. from here and get him to drop her off at the vet so they can do the spay and he probably would be willing to pay for her to stay with them for the 2 weeks and then pick her up before leaving to the airport. Will it be safe for her to travel after a spay?? And if i can manage to do that can Sweetie share a cage with of the boys safely or will there still be problems?? I really dont want to give them away. They are literally my only company when im home. It would be SUPER lonely without them.

My bunny took a few days to heal from her spay. She will need pain medications. Does your dad know how to handle your bunny?

I am glad that he will be able to take her with him to the states to get fixed.

If she gets fixed, I would keep your rabbit away from the males for a month. Her hormones need to go down.

That could be a possibility! She should be ok to travel after that.  Mine was pretty active the next day but it does vary rabbit to rabbit. 2 weeks should be good time for her to recover.  There are lots of rabbit vets in California. Do you need help locating one for Sweetie?

You will need to look into the travel restrictions for going out and entering both the US and El Salvador. If it can’t be arranged for now, would you Dad be doing future trips?

My dad has NEVER handled the bunnies, lol, he is scared they will bite him, lol!! But i would put her in a carrier and he could hand her over to the vet in the carrier. I actually think i will skip skool tomorrow and see if i can go to the airport and see what are the rules and restrictions in traveling with exotic animals internationaly. i can get this kind of information at the airport right?? And im not sure when my dad would be going back to the states after this, but I will be going in the summer. My grandpa lives in Malibu California so i would have to find a vet some where around Malibu, so it would be great if anyone knows of a vet around that vicinity. If i only get Sweetie spayed will she be able to bonded to both males? or will i have to make arrangements for the male buns too?? I cant take all 3 with me, and i dont think my dad is gonna want to take all three with him either. I wouldnt be able to either because I have plans on bringing back with me some rabbit supple from the states such as Xpens and NIC grids and bunny vitamins and pellets they dont sell bunny pellets here, so i have to really portion their intake of pellets since its a hassle getting their food. They have a really high diet of timothy hay and fresh greens.

I did a quick google search for “veterinarios en san salvador”: http://www.google.com/search

The first link (not the map) seems to have a listing of vets…not sure how up to date they are, but you could call around to ask and see if anybody sees bunnies.  I tried searching “veterinarios de exoticos en san salvador” to no avail…and two of the first-page hits for “veterinarios en san salvador + conejo” returned “Carne de conejo en SAN SALVADOR” (rabbit meat in San Salvador)…err, not what I was looking for

It looks like there is some amount of vet resources in the city..maybe, as was suggested, you could find a yellow pages listing of some kind? Or you could ask one of your classmates/friends for help if you have trouble navigating the system.  Good luck!

The airport may be able to assist with specific airllines and booking protocols for animals. I think you would have to check with each countries Customs laws for other information. Dept. of Agriculture?   I’m not certain you’d be able to fulfill all requirements in 4 days. Maybe planning this when you travel to the States would be better. I imagine you’d feel happier too being the person accompanying Sweetie.

My dad travels with American Airlines, I will look up information on the customs laws tomorrow i think i might be too sick to go to school tomorrow so i will do all of that tomorrow. Oh and peppypoo im not sure if they have “yellow pages” here but ill check with my classmates and see what i can find. So does this mean I wont be able to bond Mango and Nanner until they get neutered? I think in 6 months we might be moving to Europe, not exactly sure where though, my dad and I tend to move alot so maybe if i dont get enough time to fix all 3 I can maybe get better luck in being able to neuter the males over there. I think i need to get a headstart on finding info and vets that do this in europe just in case. Ill be in the states for 2months so Sweetie will have more than enough time to heal. I will feel more comfortable with her traveling with me instead of my dad. You guys are so helpful, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! You dont know how much I appreciate your help!! i was feeling really, really depressed abobut the whole situation, i really dont want to give my buns away and I know if Sweetie ends up pregnant my dad will give her away without giving it a second thought, thats why i keep them in different floors to minimize the chances of one of them escaping and meeting up with Sweetie. Each floor has a baby gate so that reduces the chances even more, i had my dad install the baby gates at each floor when I got Mango and warned me about Sweetie having kits.

Well, don’t be afraid to ask any more questions or generally chat about rabbits. That’s what the Binky Bunny forums are for.

I want to say I am really impressed at what you are willing to do. I don’t normally suggest someone rehome their rabbits but I didn’t see many options for you initially. I’m pleased to see that there actually are more options to better the situation. : )

Welcome here SweetApples. I have to commend you. Reading your posts, you sound to be a very intelligent, mature young lady. Some members would hear our response that it’s not a good idea to bond unaltered bunnies and either give up, or decide to risk it and try anyways. You have been able to talk this thru with us and try out different scenarios, and it appears you are well on your way to getting those buns taken care of.

I don’t really have much to add, but it sounds like your parents are definitely willing to work with you, so that is a big plus. Please keep us posted on what you find out.

Okay. To find vets in my area I use AEMV.org If you punch in your country (which I believe you live in Mexico?) it will come up with a listing of Exotic Mammal Vets near you. I found three in Mexico though I am completely unfamiliar with the area and so couldn’t tell you where they are in relation to you. Please give it a try, maybe you’ll luck out and find something.

Okay so i woke up super early today to start gathering the information I need and I should have tooken a friend with me, lol, my spanish isnt all that good yet so there was a slight language barrier, lol. But I did get to visit two vets, which peppypoo they do have “yellow pages” here put in the internet. Anyways i only got see two because San Salvador is pretty far away from where we live maybe like a 3-4 hour drive. I was able to get a bus to take me there. The 2 vets that i saw though straight out told me they have never spayed a rabbit before or even examined a rabbit, so im not so sure about it, they are more than willing to try but, i dont want my bunny to be the “scratch piece of paper”. One of the actually recomended i just fatten her up, let qoute what he told me ” Just fatten her up, if she gets too much fat around her uterine horns they will choke and she wont be able to conceive” Is this even possible??

i did find another vet on the yellow pages but ill have to go see him tomorrow after I get out of school, this is his website:
http://www.paginasamarillas.com/www.serviciosveterinarios.com.sv/web_15856061_2_1_1345_2_1/index.aspx i like that there is a bunny in his homepage

Just in case I found a vet in california that is close by where my grandpa lives and offers overnight hotel stay for pets!!!! Just in case she doesnt get to travel with me. I went to go see my Dad’s co-worker and his going to be traveling to the states in 1 week and he said he would be willing to take Sweetie and drop her off there. this is there website http://westlakevet.com/index.html

I really like that they have a pet hotel and are willing to board exotic animals aside from dogs and cats. Ill be calling later and see how much they charge and if they have any experience with bunnies. I will go to the airport tomorrow I just have to figure out how to get the bus over there.

I have a big gut feeling his job will require for him to move to either France or Italy, Im hoping italy since I have struggled so much to learn spanish that i cant think of having to learn to speak french. Itlalian would seem easier for me since ive heard it has alot of spanish root words.

You need to check into what the countries that you are entereing (US or Europe- and then back into El Salvador) what they allow for animals to enter- what vaccines if any, what vet papers if any, and what quarantine period if any.
I work for a vet clinic- and it varies per country as to what they require. Many countries are strict about what they allow and their procedures due to possibility of introducing new diseases into the country.
It is unlikely that you will be able to get all 3 to live together peacefully and using the litterbox reliably if only Sweetie is spayed. Your boy bunnies like her because they want to mate- so they are not bonded (as their affection might indicate). And once Sweetie is spayed she may not be so welcoming of the unwanted attention.
Good Luck and keep us updated- but the first step will be to see what the countries require for the bunnies to enter the country.
