Ok so ive had my bunny, Teddy, for 4 years approximately, hes about 5-6 years old and over the last few months ive given him freedom of having my bedroom during the day whilst im at work becuase he just sleeps all day (normally he would be confined to the kitchen and hall area which is quite small) but ive noticed this last few days hes doing what seems like spraying in my living room as although he doesnt mark my cream rug it is lightly wet to touch after hes done it… it looks like he’s about to take a pee. Now ive never seen him do this before and he has been neutured and im wondering if anyone has any answers to what/why he is doing this… do you think its too much freedom so hes marking out his boundaries or something? Should I start to confine him back to the kitchen again? am concerned he may be urinating or spraying all over my bedroom without me knowing at the moment.

        Emma.

When was his last vet visit? IMO he’s a bit old to just suddenly start spraying. My first thought is marking, but I think an exam would be a good idea too.

His last visit to the vet which was for an anual booster was only about 2 months ago but he seemed fine then.  He was also off his raisins yesterday which is unsual for him but he was still eating everything else.

Do you have other pets or animals approaching outside the house?
This just reminded me of a story about a cat who started spraying the curtains. It turned out a feral cat was visiting outside and the pet cat viewed it as a thread and marked it’s territory.
I realise rabbits are not exactly like cats but they can be territorial and also spray when stressed or as a defence.

This is the strange part.. nothing has changed for him, everything is the same, same people visiting me same food, same everything that i know of, he doesnt even normally take any notice when my friends bunny marks me. He just seems really off but ive managed to persuade him to eat a little bit of carot. He is also hugging the radiator… like he cant get close enough to it. Is it male menopause LOL!

If he is doing other stuff out of the norm, you may want to take him in to the vet for a check up. especially if he isn’t eating like he usually does, or is hugging the radiator like he’s freezing to death.

I agree. You know, Binky Bunny’s Jack started being excessively humpy and spraying when she bought home the new bunny Vivian. At first it was though it was due to that but it turned out he had a bladder stone. I’m not saying that’s what is going on with Teddy but more so that some antics we might think are hormonal or territorial are not always exactly that. (I’m listening to my own advice here regarding my girl bun who had been acting out of the norm. )

Thanls for the advice. Sadly Teddy has taken a turn for the worse, hes in the bunny hospital tonight and may not make it through. The vet doesnt know whats wrong with him, at the mo they can only treat him for diabetes but if he makes it through ok tonight I have to take him to a specialist tomorrow so keep fingers crossed for him please.

                      Teddy’s very worried mom.

                      x

                          Hiy guys,

Sadly Teddy passed away this morning, was very upsetting.

The vets didnt know what was wrong with him and there are no Specialists locally so I couldnt have him checked out straight away, he spent last night in a hospital and I was going to travel with him today but sadly he died minutes before I arrived to collect him.

I suspect it was a condition called GI Stasis which the vet thinks it may well could have been and they tried to treat him for, he also had very high glucose which indicated diabetes and his temperature was extremely low and explains why he was hugging the radiator.

Definately keep an eye on your buns… Teddy was fine one minute and not with me anymore the next , it all happened so fast so speed vetinary care is of the essence.

                          Take care everyone.

                          Emma x

I had hoped to be reading a different update. I’m so very sorry. He had a loving home for the majority of his life because of you.
