Coco has lived through the night, which is just amazing. When I got her to the vet yesterday, her lips were blue and she was fairly limp. She was somewhat responsive – but not eating, even when I wedged the stalk of dill ( her fave) in her mouth. I also got a few drops of Rescue Remedy in her mouth at the vets office, because I felt it couldn’t hurt.

I called the vet and got her in within about 35 minutes of realizing she was not well.

Since she had been eating and pooping perfectly fine at 1 a.m. ( when she last danced around me before I went to bed) , A Stasis episode didn’t make a great deal of sense.

I am lucky to have a really great, rabbit savvy vet who assessed Coco and began treatment immediately. As in, talked with me for about 3.5 minutes then went to work on her. Coco got IV fluids to begin to flush her system, Pain meds and antibiotics. Her temperature had dropped to 35C ( Normally about 38 C) and she was going into shock ( ergo the blue lips) So they had her in the incubator to warm her.

The vet has called us three times since we brought Coco in – and the Vet tech called us first thing this morning (Sunday) to update us. Coco survived the night, which is promising. Our vet was pretty honest that the odds of getting Coco through this were about 30% at the beginning. Coco’s body temp is slowly rising, although it is difficult to tell entirely since they are keeping her in the incubator, so it may be a false positive. This morning, she is moving around more on her own AND is eating on her own, although is still on IV fluids/antibiotics/pain meds to help her stomach try to flush the bacteria and whatever obstruction  caused the original bloat.

I assembled a couple of articles on Bloat, and they explain the difference between Bloat and GI stasis. I am fortunate to have a vet who seems to know the difference AND seems to have started the procedures FAST enough to perhaps save our Coco.

There was a moment in the vets office when I had to decide whether to take Coco home to die, or begin the treatment. She has given us such great joy that I knew that she deserved a chance to fight this and survive. Yes, the financial cost was unexpected and costly, but I have some money tucked away for animal emergencies (learned from my years on this forum!)

I am also grateful that all the years here have trained me to JUST GO to the vet when I know something is very wrong. Waiting even another hour would have sure killed her.

Thank you for the update. Coco is a strong girl. I hope that helps her come through this. Your quick decision would have been critical in her surviving til now. I’ve only learnt about bloat (in adult rabbits) in the last 6 months or so. That bunnylu article is one that I learnt of it from. It does get easily confused with GI stasis.

              {{{Coco}}}  {{{comforting vibes}}} for Jackson also.

No word, so I am going on the “no news is good news” theory. I expect to hear from the Vet first thing in the AM – We got the call at 8:30 this morning as to the overnight update.

Jersey – I had never really considered Bloat – I knew what to watch for in terms of Stasis – but I have to be honest that this took me by surprise. Plus, and I know that it has been repeated a thousand times – but it was SO fast. She went from binkies begging for a papaya treat to Blue lips in shock in a matter of hours.

And as I discussed with the Vet – she was in the “perfect” rabbit environment – They are pellet free, fresh greens 2ce a day – unlimited Local Hay and free roam. She wasn’t getting too much sugar or Carbs, Plenty of Hay, Water and exercise to keep her gut moving. A Papaya Tablet ( or 2) a day. I groom them when they are shedding, to help keep down fur ingestion. I was/ am doing it all right – and still, it just happens.

The only thing I might add is the couple of tablespoons per day of unsweetened Pineapple juice. There seems to be some indication that this might help digest the fur, particularly during molts.

Jackson remains aloof. He is upset, no doubt. I have tried to comfort by rubs several times, but he Quite clearly misses her. He has never been here without her, so this is awfully strange for him. For most of the day, he has been under the bed, just staying put. He has come out for greens and litter box and Hay…but right back under the bed when he is done.

I had to change the litter, but I didn’t do a super proper clean, as I wanted to preserve some of her scent for him.

Thanks everyone – I will update again as soon as I hear in the morning. Every hour she survives seems to really increase her chances.

I’m glad to hear that she made it through the night. I think you made the right choice in giving her the chance to fight this. They can be absolutely amazing sometimes. I’ve experienced a situation when I was certain Bindi was going to die…I said my goodbyes and just held him through the night but he was an incredible fighter and pulled through. Hang in there and never doubt the power of a little bunny spirit!

Sending lots of vibes to ((((((Coco)))))))))

Oh, She’s Home! She jumped into my arms when the vet tech brought her out!

Her temp normalized, her pooping has been good, still kind of small – but frequent. She has been eating like crazy they said. I have meds to give her twice a day for a couple more days, but other than that – She is in the litterbox right now, seriously chomping down on her Hay.

She and Jackson are Ignoring each other at the moment…. But no hostility.

They aren’t sure what caused the Bloat – Jackson is in a heavy Molt right now, so it could have been something as simple as her grooming Him.

But Oh. It is hard to describe how incredibly Glad We all are to have her here home with us.

The vet techs, the Vets, the front desk staff – All were All smiles as we left.

And then, as we were walking out I found someones Blackberry in the snow, and brought it in to the front desk!

Thanks to all of you for your good thoughts AND my proper Bunny Mom training which Got her to the Vet Fast enough so she could be saved. Getting her to the vet so fast is surely what saved her life ( and having A Vet practice which is Exotics, so they know what to do!)

You do hooking?  I remember the first time I saw someone do it- it was a relief vet at work and she said “there are no appointments so I might as well do some hooking.”  Sounded kinda funny until I saw her working on her rug.  LOL

Glad for the great news on Coco!!!!!!  You must be in bunny bliss right now to have your sweet girl home where she belongs.

Yes Katnip – I am a Hooker. I laugh every time I go to Hooking Class..,It is Me and a bunch of MUCH older women. They keep inviting me to Hook-ins, but I am not ready to go that far yet! All Hookers.

Now Coco News: She had a slow day yesterday. Annoyed with me forcing medicine into her 2ce a day….Annoyed with Jackson who keeps wanting to mount her from both Joy and his 2.5 day reign as King of the Roost. She ate Some – not tons and her poops were still quite small.

She would half a papaya tablet, then ignore the rest. Ate some salad in the Am, but more Hay.

BUT this morning, the Old Coco appeared. Mowed through the salad Then headed for the Hay. She is also more active overall, and her attitude has returned – The cat got a resounding Thump when he walked into the room this morning.

                                          Now THAT’S Coco!

That’s wonderful! Does the vet have any idea what may have caused the bloat?

Honestly Sarita, we went through the list of “usual” culprits and No Clue.

She doesn’t get pellets or things with high carb or sugar content.
I give her a papaya tablet ( or two) every day. She gets fresh greens twice a day, plenty of fresh water. She is an excellent Hay eater and I get the hay from a local farm – stored in four pound bags in our Cold and Dark basement, She is free roam so I know she is usually moving around a great deal. She isn’t overweight.

There was no Stress event of which I am aware.

The only thing “different” is that Jackson is in a Heavy Molt right now. Coco finished hers a couple of weeks ago. While I brush him ( and her) to get the fur off, she may have ingested more of his hair during a grooming session and that may have set it off. At the vets suggestion I am adding a small bowl of pineapple juice to their evening diet (Like 3 tablespoons) She feels strongly that this will help them move the fur vis a vis the enzyme theory. I figure, what the heck, it can’t hurt them.

Yay, Coco! I hope she continues to recover. The rug is gorgeous – I doubt the buns appreciate it as much as we do! That’s so funny – I’m tempted to try hooking so I can tell people I’m a “hooker”. I recently picked up a package of dried pineapple rings (unsweetened and unsulfured) from Trader Joe’s – my bun and I both enjoy it as an occasional treat.
