This morning a moose came by my place. It just cracks me up how funny he looks standing by objects such as my neighbor’s shed. They move so effortlessly in the deep snow, it’s amazing. I love seeing them.

That is the coolest thing ever! It’s always been a dream of mine to see a moose. Apparently we have 100 now living in my area, but most people will never see one 🙁

Looks like he is waiting for someone to get the door

Haha! At first I was thinking ”Monkey’s Moose”. What, he stopped by?

Awesome pic! I miss seeing Moose. When I was a kid they would sometimes eat the apple trees behind our house. Most people think they’re ugly; I think they are beautiful.

I was thinking the same thing! I wish I could see moose in my backyard! The most “exotic” thing around here is coyotes and I’ve never seen one, but heard them at my dad’s. He lives in the country about a mile away from a river, so late at night during the spring/summer, we can hear their pups barking and stuff. Actually I think the most exotic animal I’ve seen is a great horned owl out near my dad’s. The things was HUGE too. Didn’t get a good look cause it was at night, but it fit the size and coloring and wingspan. lol

We also have coyotes all over here, Bunbuns. In my five years here I’ve only seen them twice though. Animals in busy areas get really good at hiding!

Wish the deer would get good at hiding! LOL Actually, I don’t see any type of wild life usually until I go out to my dad’s in the country. When I was going to my mom’s who lives in Peoria as well, I saw 3 raccoons in the ditch. I couldn’t figure out what they were at first cause they were bigger than a cat, but smaller than a medium sized dog and looked weird. Then I realized it was raccoons. They were HUGE and FAT. Obviously city living was treating them well! lol

Me too! lol. Was thinking dang, no wonder he’s tired and napping away the afternoon. Would have been quite the run to get there and back without me or the hubby noticing

That’s too funny about the door! It really looks that way, have to show my neighbor~
well, this moose is small, and I do not feed them even though I would like to. It isn’t a good idea to get them hooked on being fed close to homes.

Whoa! We wanted to see a moose SO BAD when we were up in Maine over the summer! There were tons of moose crossing signs, but not one glimpse of the real thing! But then not too long ago, we watched one of those “When Animals Attack” shows that had moose footage… those things are big and DANGEROUS! Have you ever had damage done by a moose?

I hear they have a similar problem with kangaroos in Australia… car damage and such.

But they’re both so FREAKIN’ CUTE!

Moose are nice to see…from a distance. There are a lot of moose/vehicle related deaths around here. Mostly in the Fall. When my bf was in college, a guy in another class was paralyzed from the neck down; He veered to avoid a moose but didn’t see there was a baby and hit into it. The baby moose went right through the windsheild and landed on top of him. It was so sad. The college students did a bunch of fundraisers to raise money for his family.

Moose are not like deer and do not jump or run across the road; they just stand still many times when the cars approach and are invisible against the darkness. You just can’t see them at all. A moose may charge at you if he felt threatened, or during mating season anyways, or if a mother’s calf was approached. But I find them also very shy. I think confrontations happen when the moose feels he/she has no escape.

We just had a moose/driver fatality in the news today. A woman had swerved and avoided the moose, but was thrown from her vehicle when it rolled over in the ditch. Very sad.
Also if you hit a moose or find one that has been injured and is suffering by the side of the road, it is illegal in Alaska to put it out of it’s misery. You have to call a trooper and wait till he/she comes out to dispose of the poor thing. Then the meat is salvaged for charity.

I always drive very carefully here, no matter the season, since I know moose abound. But a lot of folks just drive like maniacs and don’t think about the wild creatures.

I mostly just see tracks or poos from the moose in my yard these days, Petzy. It’s really unnerving when I go take Jenna for her night walk and there’s fresh moose tracks across our driveway. I am certain I’m going to get stomped simply because I won’t see it till it’s too late. 0_o

I had to post about this ridiculous letter I read in the local newspaper’s editorial this morning. I’m sure this guy will get lots of “you’re an idiot -type responses”, if not I may have to write one. This guy is suggesting that because of the danger moose pose to drivers in New Brunswick and Newfoundland and since all moose are good for is looking at, photographing and hunting, the government should declare “open season” and hunt them till extinction. Then if you want to look at a moose you can go to the zoo.

Maybe he doesn’t realize that the moose were here first and we paved highways in “their” neighborhood. Let’s just open season on all animals that are inconvenient to man. Great idea, moron..

I don’t mind fox and deer too much. I do get nervous when the local fox (and we also have a bobcat here lately…eep!) is going through my neighborhood and I’m walking my little Yorkie at night. Nevermind how I watch my buns like a hawk if they are going outdoors for any reason.
Our local hares are too smart for this guy though. He has to be happy catching grouse to eat. I see rabbit tracks everywhere that are pretty obviously from a chase, but your can see how the fox doesn’t even get a sniff of them, they are too fast.

I realize some people need to hunt for subsistence, like the natives here, but people who want to shoot something so life is more convenient for them need to be removed form the gene pool. Period. I wouldn’t even dignify such stupidity with a response, LPT.
