  Today was Mango’s annual exam – he’s about 8 1/2 years old so he’s a senior fellow.
  
  I know that everyone is always asking how much vet visits costs so I thought I’d give you a breakdown of what my vet charges for rabbits.
  
  Exotic Examination – $56.00
  
  Urinalysis – $35.00 – he has a urinary infection
  
  Blood work – $162.68 – I believe this profile is much more in-depth that the exam they do for a presurgery since they are sendng this out to a lab. As you can see, it’s expensive – we want to do bloodwork due to his age and also we want to start him on some pain medication for arthritis so she wants to see his kidney values.
  
  Sub-q fluids that they administered (to help dilute his urine for his urinary infection) – $29.50
  
  His mediation – $32.23 for the baytril and $18.00 for compounding.
  
  As you can see, it’s not cheap – heck even for the exam. I do think that my vet is in the mid-range as far as costs and maybe more on the high side but not outrageous by any means. She is located in the “Uptown” area in my city which is a very large metropolitan city and the “Uptown” area is a bit on the expensive side as far as rent (at least for apartments) – it’s really a regentrfied area of the city.
  
  Luckily I have Care Credit since this bill was over $300 and my vet takes Care Credit! So I can pay it out over 18 months as long as I pay the minimum with no finance charge – I always pay it well in advance but I like that I can spread it out without penalty if needed.

  Looks to be about what my vet charges, which seems to be the average here too.

  Wow… baytril is expensive o_o ;; I paid about $12-$15 dollars. An ear culture was about $18.

  The animal hospital I take Smokey is
  
  $40 for a visit
  $15 for flea medicine that lasts me 3-4 months
  $8 for a nail cut
  $108 to be spayed
  $75 for pre-surgery bloodwork
  
  When I took Smokey to the vet when she had gas, they gave her 10cc of fluid since she didn’t eat/drink for about 6 hours and they didn’t charge me any extra

  LPT – I don’t think this is available in Canada. It is a credit card but it has some promotional features that can allow you to pay the amount due out over a period of time without a finance charge. For instance this particular charge was a little over $300 and they allow me to pay it off in 18 months w/no finance charge as long as I pay the minimum amount due on time each month. I usually pay it off way before it’s due but I like the freedom of being able to do it for a longer period of time without finance charges just in case.
  
  It can be used for vet, dental, medical as long as that provider takes this card.

  My vet has charged me… (£1 is roughly $1.60)
  
  £21 for an exam
  £6 per 100ml Baytril
  £16 for a follow up consultation
  £37 for a general anaesthetic
  £12.50 for an x-ray
  £11 for a nail trim
  £31 for a urinalysis
  £14 for metacam
  
  It was around £45 for a neuter around 18 months ago.
  
  I thought it might be interesting to see the difference between the US and UK.

  My vet charges $73.25/visit! Gotta love Northern NJ. :/
  
  She also has a sliding scale for the molar trim:
  132, 165, or 197.25 – depending on how “difficult” the rabbit is (I think that’s what the tech said)

  WOW Grumpybun, the neuter is really cheap!!!!!
  I am using a convertor right now lol. I was really curious about the International price differences!
  
  Spaying is more expensive here. I paid 84 GBP for my bunny’s spay Are spays more pricey in England?

  I don’t know how much a spay is to be honest, Brittany, I think it would be more expensive. I believe my vet has a policy of cheap speutering to encourage take-up though. Plus, my buns were only in for 6 hours.

  I think Peppy’s usual vet charges around $60 for a normal small-mammal exam; however, it usually ends up being about $100 when we take her in due to medications, lab tests, etc. Peppy’s spay cost about $300 (where did you get such a cheap spay Brittany???) and Remi’s neuter cost about $200, though I did go for the optional blood testing/catheter package for both of them, and the speuter prices included medication. When Peppy had a bad bout of diarrhea/GI stasis, a 2-night emergency vet stay ran us $600. And to think…we adopted Peppy for free, lol.
