I’ve been feeding my girls timothy since I got them but a few days ago when I went to the pet store to replenish they were having a sale on Oat Hay (1 lb for $2.50). I grabbed the last few bags and took ’em home. I love the smell of it and the whole look and feel is very different. I was worried my girls wouldn’t go for it but when I woke up this morning it was completely gone from both cages. What are the differences between the hays and which is your/your bunnies favorite(s).

Hays do vary in their nutritional composition, but as long as it’s a grass hay it’s just as good for your rabbit as the standard timothy, provided he eats it as readily. It’s hard to state the composition of individual batches of hay because it also depends on which cut it is from, how much sun it received, what the soil was like etc. In fact, even a normally rich alfalfa hay which as a legume hay and would be a highly nourishing hay, can turn out to have lower values than another batch of hay just as a result on these circumstances. If your rabbit likes the oat hay, it’s a very healthy choice. I hear many members love the oat hay for their rabbits. My rabbits’ most favorite hay is actually timothy, at least going by the speed with which they suck it back.

I give Smokey Oat hay when she is shedding, as per the advice of the lovely people on here. I was told it helps with moving the hair along.

Smokey loves ANY kind of hay. Timothy, Orchard, Oat, etc.

My 3 love Oat and orchard the best, but will eat pretty much any kind of hay I give them. I’m glad they are such good hay eaters!

There are little bit different of nutrition in different type of hays.

For instance, orchard grass hay is kinda little bit higher in protein than timothy hay.

Here’s the link for you to see the hay chart.

Otto definitely loves timmy the best, so I don’t bother buying anything else now. I’ve never tried different hays with Hannah since Otto didn’t like them, but maybe it would be a good treat once in a while.

I always go by the thinking that all grass hays are pretty much the same – so timmy, orchard, oat, bermuda, brome, etc – and I don’t worry about which one I feed. They are slightly different, but I figure whatever they eat the most of is the best one for them.

I have heard some say that feeding different types of hay is good, since they provide slightly different nutrients and textures (for wearing teeth), but I figure as long as they’re eating a lot I won’t worry too much about variety.
