Can someone give me a list of questions that I should ask a vet, to see if they’re experienced enough to do a successful bunny neuter?  What do you look for?  What are the answers you’d WANT to hear? .

Also, what’s a range for neutering cost?  If the vet gives a quote that’s way low, or way high, I know that could be a red flag as well.

Here’s the list of questions that the House Rabbit Society recommends:

          http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/spay-ne…-questions

Prices really vary from place to place.  You need to find out what the price includes when they quote you.

CO-HRS has a good article on this:
            http://www.coloradohrs.org/articles…od_vet.asp

The cost for neuter surgeries really varies. It’s a relatively quick and non-invasive surgery, so I’ve found that most vets charge less than $250. The cheapest I’ve seen it is $75.

Yes, I’ve read that list.  I was wondering if there were any other questions, that people had asked, with first-hand experience.

Thanks for the range, I realize it varies a lot based on location, but the $75-$250 range gives me an idea!

How many spays and neuters do you do? Have you lost a rabbit?

Will you notify me for updates or do I have to call?

                  Do they give pain meds?

                  Say hi to Zeus!

Mocha’s neuter was $60, but I will never go back to that vet again because he is old and ditsy, not very good with rabbits, and has dirty equipment.

Have you checked any rabbit rescues in your area for recommendations?

When I was calling around,I thought it was a red flag when they said that blood work was optional. In my opinion, I don’t want a vet putting my rabbit under anesthesia without doing the proper blood work first.
Some vets offer laser surgery, others do only laser. You will pay more $$ for Laser surgery.  Mine only offers laser surgery. The laser will coterize(sp?) as they cut – less bleeding.
I don’t know if it is standard procedure or not but, It would be good to know whether they stitch the incision, or glue it. Mine glues because they say the animal will lick at it less.
My vet also will not do a surgery with out access to a vein. So if she is not able to get a catheter in, she reschedules. I like that about her…she is not willing to put the animal through an excess amount of stress.

Nugget do you know how much does a blood work cost on average?

The price really depends on where you live. I would die if I saw a $250 neuter around here! Otto’s was $400  But that’s what I get for living in one of the richest counties in the US (and not being rich myself )

Do you have a local shelter that can recommend a vet? I find that to be a good way to know which vets are good and reputable. Shelters have many many rabbits spayed and neutered (in addition to other care) so they won’t see a vet that isn’t good with bunnies.

In my experience, neutering is less spendy than a spay. At the place I went to get Chacha spayed, a neuter was 95 dollars. I paid 135 dollars for the spay and no extra addition since she had to stay for 2 nights.

Bloodwork usually runs around $100 or more in my experience.

I wish I could remember the exact breakdown of the costs….I remember when I was calling around (locally in central MN), alot of places were asking around $165 for the surgery and an additional $60 for the laser option. Now, I paid around $240 for Olivers neuter, and the bloodwork ran about $110 but was covered under the annual vet-care plan that i purchased.
those health plans are really good to ask about also. I’m sure they all vary, but the one I purchased will cover annual bloodwork, biannual fecal exams and any office visits, should Oliver get sick.
