Oh wow… that’s terrible. Flooding is so often underestimated. Have you been able to get in touch with your relatives?

Hope your rellies will be ok! Are they in the badly effected areas? So weird how we can have drought, so little for so long and then this deluge of rain.

Just a note Rabbitsarecool; be sure to mosquito proof your rabbits cages REALLY well. There’s a myxo epidemic in Melbourne at the moment. It’s actually getting bad everywhere because of this rain + heat combination.

Jersey and I are in SA, we have just had a warning that on Thursday a massive storm is coming in, expected to get over 1 months rainfall in just a few hours…. Happens every 10 years or so but have already had floods here a few weeks ago so now it’s looking pretty deathly serious. We are in a bad spot where our shop is, river on one side, beach on the other…
The farm is the big concern, last time this happened the hill behind our house flash flooded and the water broke all our back windows and drowned the back part of the house, and the river overflowed so we couldn’t leave the property… A lady got caught in flood waters at kanmantoo and was found wrapped around our front fence posts 5pm from where she was swept. I bogged 2 cars under the water in the front paddocks, and 2 tractors 3 weeks later trying to get them out. And when the mud dried it went like cement and we had to dig them out. And this time its meant to be worse.
And that’s a separate storm to the QLD one! The QLD one is meant to circle over us in a few days, and then settle over Melbourne. Melbourne flooding would be BAD!
It’s pretty serious considering they had to evacuate Brisbane CBD!

I wish both of you would take your families (animals) and evacuate to higher ground for the next week. There isn’t much you can do while trapped in it, but with advanced warning you can at least be safe, take your important papers and most precious belongings, and wait it out. We evacuate for hurricanes here all the time. It’s gotten so everyone has a hurricane bag packed. It’s just avoiding danger and being helpless. The rescue people become endangered too when people don’t get ready. (Don’t forget any insurance papers you might have to cover damages.) If we can all leave home for a vacation, we can for a pending natural disaster, right? And if the worst doesn’t happen, well, you’ve had a mini vacation. Please stay safe.

I just saw this video posted on another forum: http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2011/01/11/3110493.htm It’s crazy, I feel so bad for you guys. Kafrn, I really hope you and your family are safe!!! As horrible as losing/damaged property is, lives are so much more important. *hugs* It makes me thankful for living in the Pacific NW…as blah and dreary as so many of the days here are, at least we don’t have natural disasters to worry about the vast majority of the time.

My Prayers are with you all. How sad that people and animals have to deal with such things. I’ve seen a lot of pictures in the news and I truly feel for you all. Stay safe and help each other as best you can.

Yes, they’re expecting the Brisbane river to peak in about 4 hours. At least there’s time for people to prepare and evacuate. What’s happened in Toowomba and Grantham is so sad. Alot of areas on the east coast of Australia is experiencing flooding. In Western Australia it’s bushfires. Hopefully the rain expected in my state (SA) won’t be like the east is experiencing. We’ve already had some unseasonal flooding before Christmas.  There is talk this weather pattern (La Nina) could continue right up into our Autumn (Mar-Apr-May).

Yes, it’s been drought for ages. : (

Someone told me the flooded regions is an area about 227, 000 square kms. [ edited ]

Thought I’d bump this thread back as our eyes here are again turned to Queensland. Wiithin a few hours it will be hit by a Cat. 5 cyclone. They have been preparing for days and many regions have evacuated. This is the highest on our tropical cyclone scale and they haven’t see one this big hit land in over 100 years.  It is said there will be flooding to follow this cyclone…

I feel so bad for what Queenslanders have been enduring. Please keep them in your thoughts.

Oh no! Are most of the people evactuated? Have the flood waters eased up much? There hasn’t been anything in the newspaper of late and I don’t watch the news so I’m not really sure how things are going there now. I hope everyone and their animals stay safe.

I certainly hope that Queensland, Haiti and all the places devastated by extreme weather this past year will get some of the peace and tranquility predicted with the coming Year of the Rabbit.
