› FORUM › HABITATS AND TOYS › very highback litterbox?
I know we have tons of litterbox/litter threads …sorry to make a new one bleh
I’ve seen a lot of members using the very tall sided litterboxes with the lowered opening like the one here on leith petwerks
http://www.leithpetwerks.com/prodpage.cfm
unfortunetly sold out atm…I want to try one out.
I’m frustrated cleaning my boxes everyday, especially this past week since I am sick. I bend over and my head feels like it will explode. Right now I have … 6 ….6 litter boxes in my room. I ran out of woodstove pellets again and I am back to just newspaper.
Bee….she digs dig dig dig. I know I could try that metal thing to put over but I just spent 40$ on different types of boxes…

That is a semi high back one I bought…it is containing the hay much better but still poos are wandering about…. maybe it could still be poowars but I dunno I just want to make my room a lot cleaner.
So about litter…obviously I am saving money by using newspaper….but now the boys have turned it into a toy
They are making a huge mess and poo is all over the Indybun mansion like I showed in a different thread.

I saw a member with that huge highback litterbox filled full of carefresh. Carefresh is expensive…and I would probably go through a bag filling all 6 litterboxes….but could I use a cat sifter thing or …do you guys just spot clean the corner of their box they favor?
I need a new economic way so that I am not breaking the bank but I want my room to smell a bit nicer that newspaper isn’t doing for me, and to keep the boxes a bit tidier…aka bink bros = stinky bink super messy bros now. I bought a bag of aspen shavings. Bun will surely not use them because they are rough.
Bun is my little angel girl. She has her tiny pink litterbox and sure her poos are around but she’s so good and never messes anything up. Just begs for treats and nose rubs….unlike those stinky binks. !!
I think the scariest thing is that I can’t smell the rabbits anymore. Only if I shove a litterbox to my face can I smell it. Sometimes if I am gone for like 2 days I can smell them but yea….that’s bad right? So I do clean everyday but I get worried now that I have lost my bunny scent in my nose -.-
Have you tried litter boxes with a top to them before? That might solve your flying poo/hay problem at least, and possibly contain the smell issue.
That is an idea too!
I just need to feel better and do some shopping; I think my best bet with all those litter boxes are woodstove pellets and super high back or covered boxes.
Or with the new hay bale just use a ton of hay in the boxes. I’m just having nightmares trying to put the bale of hay or like 10 bags of stove pellets in my mustang….should have listened to my mom when we bought it “ohhh its trunk is SO small wah wah wah wah how will your cello fit and horn together” mom’s know best…gah. (notice the charlie brown adult noise that my mom makes too)
Lintini, why don’t you get the BB litterscreen? It REALLY stops the digging out of litter and you can just buy the screens by themselves.
Someone just posted that they put their litterbox inside of a cardboard box with a small hole cut out on the side. Who was that?
Thanks Petzy!!! I totally blanked out! So that wouldn’t solve ALL your issues Lintini, but might make hay a bit more manageable!
I definitely would try that screen. I gave one to a friend who has a digger and it stopped the digging – she was pleased because she had had enough as well.
I want to pick up one of those little kiddy pools and just fill it with some safe dirty and just let her go at it. I already have a tarp. Def won’t be the solution to any of the digging problems but it would keep her soooo busy until she was bored of it.
I will have to try the screen
I’m thinking same as Beka for Bee & Indy’s box. You could prob get something right size from your work. Does Bee kick it all backwards or out the front of the box? The pic Cheyann posted (copy below) has a sort of “foyer” area at the entry. You could just empty anything that collects there back into the litter box.

Would the Bink Brothers soil paper if you gave them some for play? Maybe you could just use wood pellets for them and stick with what you have for the others? Then give them phonebook or scrunched up paper elsewhere in their mansion.
If you do go with the litter screen and back to pellets, you may notice you use less of them. Just a layer and scoop out the wet stuff.
I hear you though Lindsey, it can get tiring, especially when you’re unwell. I go thru modes of wanting to change the litter set up to make it easier but it all ends up the same really.
Kisses for Bun. Good girl Bun ![]()
Hey I love your hutch, is there any other pictures of it on the forum anywhere? That is something that i would love to make for my guys
AV, Lintini’s friend made it. He’s on here as MikeBun. There’s pics in Habitats gallery and there was a thread they posted at the time when it was made. It’s pretty neat. You got plans AV? lol
Mikebun made it for me about a year ago now! It’s 6′ tall , 4′ wide and 2′ deep

Do you really want to clean up all that dirt from the kiddy pool? LOL – that would stress me out even more than the digging :~) What about a box filled with shredded paper?
I’ve done the kiddy pool, but outside. It was one mess, let me tell you, you wouldn’t want it indoors. Also, they will potty in it a lot and due to the large size of a kiddy pool it is a big job to clean.
Here’s the digging box I made. I put it in my room and not much sand gets out.

And putting the litter pan in the box kept most of the litter contained. I had to get the wire things because since Minnie dug up the litter there was not much left in the litter pan and Maddie would have a pee soaked butt.
That’s a gorgeous diggy box!!!!!!
(I love that green color!)
Oh that is a fantastic idea!
Genius! I never thought of having a diggy box with lid!
Great news! Went to the local feed store and bought a bale of hay AND they are carrying woodstove pellets now!!! 5$ for a 40lb bag. I shoved 6 in the back of my trunk! The owner even remembered me and asked if I wanted him to reorder my 50lbs of oxbow basicT !! How thoughtful!
I was clearing room for the new hay bale and saw we have 3 tupperware large bins so I can make one as soon as I find a sheet rock knife or something to cut some holes and smooth them! Should I use sand or some safe/organic dirt? It’s raining now tho 😐
So it’s been a bunny productive day, I don’t think I should have gone out though I can’t stop coughing now and it’s murder on my throat. Darn this strep. Going back to the doctors tomorrow
Lintini,
I tried a google search for that specific pan you linked above, and it looks like there’s a problem getting it, so maybe it’s discontinue?
However, I did spot this one at Petco if you’re still interested in something similar:
Oh yea that is pretty similar! Thank you!
I think the major difference now is just having the woodstove pellets again…I have been using only newspaper since last summer when I ran out and it doesn’t work that well. The one box that I showed that I have keeps a good amount of hay in from Bee’s digging, and my other box I have the hay in a rack –although I now use a xtra large box..it’s about 2 feet long since Bee and Indy both like to sit in it together, the smaller one wasn’t letting them.
So between having the hay up and getting litter back in …it’s been better the past few days. I do want to get the higher back boxes still, I will have to stop by petco and see what they have at the store — or just order online.
Yep, the wood stove pellets (untreated as you know) are a good, inexpensive solution. I had tried Feline Pine which was really cheap if you’re not finding them at a hay and feed store even cheaper. If you’re going to Petco, you might want to give their Aspen Shavings a try if the pellets weren’t soft enough. It’s where I buy the Aspen pellets (kind of expensive but my favorite for safety and odor control) that I top with a layer of aspen shavings. The shavings, unlike the pine, are safe, soft, and a big bag is compressed and goes pretty far. Just a thought.
The feed store just started carrying woodstove pellets…and they carried horse stall pellet bedding too and I just never asked. So durrrr to me. I just bought a brand new bag of aspen shavings too, I use them for my piggies and for Bun – her diva bun doesn’t like woodstove pellets too much. So now it’s awesome I can get my bale of hay, 50lbs of oxbow T AND woodstove pellets all from the same feed store! I’m Very very happy! (((I hate driving)))
