Is it safe? Some people say its not but some say it is. I use it in some of my rabbits litter pans so Im wondering if its safe? Do I need to switch litter?

Is it shavings or pellets? If pine pellets, they are fine. It’s the pine shavings you should stay away from.

They are shavings. I will go switch all of their litter pans to hardwood stove pellets.

Ditto that-I love the wood stove pellets. I also find they last a really long time (more then anything else) because they are so absorbant

The whole Pine Shavings is still a debate.
I use it in one pen, our Shelter uses it and so do many others without issue. The Kiln dried has gotten rid of most of the oils that are said to be harmful. I like to think if it has a strong oder that you find irritating your pet definetly will, and any strong smelling litter then should not be used, specially if in an enclosed space… and open litter box in a room though shouldn’t be to much of an issue.

Though I’m a fan of the pellet litter, less mess, better absorption then the shavings.

Im not going to trust the shavings anymore even though they didnt have much of a smell to them. I was useing them because I thought they were safe and they are super cheap but they smelled so fast and I had to clean litter pans every day or my room would smell like pee. I am now using stove pellets and I can actually go a few days without cleaning the litter pans and my room doesnt smell like pee. They are more expensive than shavings but I dont want to risk my rabbits health and have my room smell terrible to save few bucks.

I’m glad they’re working out for you! Any potential health concerns aside, they do absorb odor better, last longer, and are less messy. Even if they cost a little bit more than the shavings, if you don’t have to clean the box as frequently, you’ll probably break even. I’ve used shavings in the past (with my rabbit before these two) and they were always getting tangled in his fur or they’d be wet and stick to his toes. I didn’t like them.

What if your bunny did not have a problem with the strong scent of pine shavings, could you be able to use it in their litter box?
