Or another one of these readers? I’m extremely tempted by the Nook Color. I have so many paperback books to read that I haven’t read though so I’m on the fence about investing in one of these. I am beginning to like the look and idea more and more though now that the Nook comes in color.
I don’t, altho my phone came installed with Kindle. I’m old-fashioned. I like turning pages.
I kind of feel the same way Beka! I think I will go to Barnes and Noble and play with the Nook Color to see how I feel about it.

Me too. I don’t feel I’ve accomplished much reading by holding a machine ![]()
I don’t, but a volunteer where I work who is an avid reader has a Kindle, and she loves it. But then, she is always glued to her phone playing computer games, too.
But my Dad bought my mother a Kindle for her birthday this year because when her back hurts it can be hard to get to the library, and she CANNOT be without a book she hasn’t read in the house. (We both stocked up at the library this morning, and I just piled up the books I own that I haven’t read in plain sight so I will read those, too. I digress.)
Anyway, she was home yesterday and stuck inside, and Dad reminded her that she could buy a book on her Kindle. It was a lifesaver. So if you are an avid reader, it’s just one more way to get a book when you really need one. Also can read in the dark, since it lights up, so won’t wake up someone else with a bed lamp. I heard Kindle has a wider selection than the Nook.
I have a Nook and I LOVE IT! Not having to hold a book open (especially paperbacks) and up to read them is so great. Not have to worry about bunnies eating the books is great. Not having to FIND a place for books is great.
My main concern before I got one was my eyes. Cause my eyes get a bit bleary and wonky if I’m on my computer for a long time. I cannot explain the technology, but my eyes DO NOT get like this when I’m on the Nook. The only time my eyes start unfocusing is when I’m really sleepy. I find no difference in my eyes between reading a book versus the Nook except normal stuff.
The main problem I do have is that it is so unbelievably easy to buy books that I have to really watch myself.
I ended up getting the cheaper Nook for $149. It’s enough for me. Although I was so ticked off when the Color one came out. But it’s at the $249 price.
One thing though: If you read a lot of books but are only a read-once type, I don’t know that I’d invest in an e-reader. This is because the prices are pretty even in terms of ebooks vs real. New e-book releases are cheaper though. If you are the type to read once and then sell off or get rid of books, I’d stick with real books. Cause once you read an e-book it’s there unless you remove it but there’s nothing tangible you could possibly sell or lend to someone. NOOK does have the lend it feature but you have to know someone with a nook in order to do this. And from what I can see, you can only lend certain books. I could be wrong on that though. I re-read my books all the time and tend to equate my nook with my ipod – eventually it will have all my books on it and I won’t want to get rid of any of them.
But I have a coworker who got a kindle cause she has arthritis in her hands and she loves it because she doesn’t have to hold a book up to read.
My aunt got a kindle for her birthday, and I have to say I was pretty impressed with it.
As for buying books, check with your library. Ours has an e-library and you can borrow e-books from them.

An e-library? Interesting…
Yep, I think the books only stay active on your account for a few weeks and then you can’t access them anymore until you “take them out” again, so it’s perfect for those that only typically read a book once. Or for people who don’t like to handle used books.

Well I’m behind on the technological curve. Or rather, I didn’t think about libraries offering e-books cause I live in area that typically isn’t super advanced. lol
I prefer good old fashioned books. Also because I reread everything I have a billion times
I am a fast reader, so I have to or the world would run out of books for me to read lol.
I shall stick to real paper books ![]()
The e-library thing has me interested. I use libraries often because I could never purchase and store the number of books I read, and I really like being able to stroll the stacks, grab random books, read them, and then return for the next guy. I buy plenty too, but usually only after I’ve already read them.
I have a Kobo (the chapters one)
Dave kept telling me to get an ebook reader and I couldn’t understand it. I kept telling him I wasn’t spending money on something to read stuff on when paper works fine…
I had NO idea how awesome they were!!!! ![]()
First the screen is magnetic instead of backlit so it’s *nothing* like your computer monitor (doesn’t tire your eyes, and you can read it in direct sunlight)-I thought it would be like a mini useless computer!!! ![]()
And you can get so many classical books for free, as well as books for free by authors who aren’t published yet (they share their work for free) and that’s soo cool! I’ve read a number of unpublished books since getting my ereader and I’ve loved them.
The kobo came with 100 free books loaded on it so very cool-ready to go from the package.
The screens are all made from the same company so should all function the same length of time, so choose your ereader on price and the functions you want (some are touch screen, some you can shop directly on).
If your thinking about it, as a HUGE reader, I would say do it.
It’s comfy, it doesn’t hurt your eyes like a computer can…also if you go on vacation instead of bringing pounds of books you bring one little slim thing!! It’s awesome! And you don’t have to burn your books, you can still (and I do!) read normal books. ![]()
Another plus-they are cheaper in ebook version so you can usually get 2-3 for the price of one
I’m reading more then ever -and more comfortably
Got my dad to get one for my mom for Xmas…I called her last night …”Can’t talk, reading twilight”
hehe
Just got the kindle today and it was totally worth it!!!! It is super light and I have already downloaded a bunch of free books. If you are deciding between the nook or kindle I would say the nook is cool because it has internet and is more like a computer(my sister just got this) and is also cool because the new one has color. I chose the kindle because I really just wanted it for reading purposes and the screen technology is great and doesnt hurt my eyes at all![]()
a friend showed me her kindle and i was impressed too! the screen is really cool and easy to read.
i don’t have one (yet) but i have been really really impressed with my elibrary! i have a membership at my local library and so signing up for their elibrary was totally free. they have only so many copies of books to borrow out so you can place a hold on one you want if its out. and they have classics which are always available. when your borrowing time is up it just expires which is great for me since i seem to have a hard time getting books returned on time. you can download a free ereader for your computer which is what i’ve been using. great for studying / researching.
Scooter here. Yes, we were very impressed with Annette aunt’s Kindle. She loaned it out to us so we could check it out. I’d been thinking about buying the large one, which has a screen size of roughly a sheet of paper. This would be for work purposes to read papers and documents. I have a tablet computer for work (not an iPad), and although it’s much easier to read documents on that versus a computer screen, it’s not e-paper and hurts the eyes after a while.
Unfortunately the regular sized kindles have too small a screen for reading technical documents. Way too much scrolling. This doesn’t matter for reading for fun, but didn’t fit my needs.
The real deal-killer was that the Kindle’s built-in PDF reader’s features aren’t very good, and that was going to be on the big Kindle too. And there’s starting to be enough technical documents that use color that it was better to wait for the next generation to come out. Which is too bad–I could buy the thing as a work expense!
sounds neat not to have books all over the place. I don’t like buying books cuz I usually only read them once. Sometimes a good one I will read again later.
I didn’t know about the elibrary. I am going to have to check that out. Cuz putting a book in my purse takes up so much space. This would be so much easier. I always have a book when I go somewhere. You just never know when you will be sitting waiting for something and need something to do.
What worries me about Kindle is that you can only get certain things.
So Kindle , Kobo and what is the other one? Hey with elibrary that would be great.
I ended up buying the regular Nook and so far, I have no idea what I think since it’s so new. They have classes to help you navigate it as well so I”m going to go to one of those.
Myself I would definitely need a class. Or some darn good written directions.
