So my cat has brought in the same wild rabbit for four days in a row and now we have decided to keep the baby. We saw a dead rabbit down the street and we are assuming thats its mother.

So anyways she is around 4 weeks old, not weaned yet. She eats the KMR we gave her earlier today. But she doesnt do anything, she stays in one spot. I understand she is wild and not used to people but all she does is walk to a couple of different spots and than stop. She defineatly has bonded with me alittle, she always ends up by me no matter where we set her down. What do baby rabbits normally do? We cant take her to the vet since its Christmas so there is no one else I can ask but you guys.

          Hi,
I have alerted the other forum leaders who have more experience with abandoned, unweaned babies and wild rabbits then I do. In the meantime, keep her complete safe and away from your cat (obvious, I know, but a cage if you have one would be a good idea, or in a box in a room with the door closed.) Get a nice soft blanket or towel for a bed, and I would have a dish of water there, too, along with a bit of hay in a corner for litter. You will probably have to syringe feed the baby water and some food soon, but I need to wait for someone else to let you know iexactly what is best at this age. If you have a syringe, try to get a bit of lukewarm water into her – just a few drops to start. If you don’t, I’d run out to an open drugstore to get one.

Find where a local rescue is, preferably a wild life center, in your area. Your best help and advice will come from the local animal rescue in your city or town. Sometimes a lactating mother with a small litter has been rescued and can take on an orphan.

We are feeding her twice a day with KMR Kitten Milk Replacement. We are only giving her thirty ccs at a time. We plan on feeding her at 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. The cat had her last night at around 7 so we put her in the shrubbery last night for the third time. When he brought her in this morning she was bleeding. We put her in the box with a towel and looked up online about food. thats where we learned about overfeeding and the KMR.

We will have to wait until monday to call due to holidays so she needs to make it through the weekend with us. I cant get hay since no one is open.

She started making noises earlier when i was putting her back in her box. She is moving around alittle and has gone #2 twice but i am not sure about #1 because of the towel.

That all sounds very good. the hay is just a suggestion, as a soft litter like bed. If you have several towels, or even a phone book that you could shred, basically it’s just something soft to act as a gentle litter that’s safe until she is in a more settled arrangement. If her belly is staying round, she’s doing well.

Her belly is more flat than round not going in and not rounding out should we feed her more tonight? Does the rounding happen instantly or should we wait after feeding her and see if it starts to round out?

When we checked on her 10 minutes ago we found that she was dead. Thanks so much for all your help. I like to think she died comfertably with a full and warm belly.

I’m so sorry I had signed off last night before I saw your update. Yes, you gave her a warm, comfortable place to be when she passed. She was cared for and fed, not left out in the wild, so you did your best to save her.

OH noo.   You did your best    and you are right.    She had a warm safe place to be comfy and a belly of food.   She certainly didn’t starve to death out in the wild all alone.

Sometimes they  just don’t make it no matter how hard we try

Thanks everyone. We are keeping the KMR until it expires just in case the cats find the other rabbit. As cute as rabbits are I hope that they dont bring any more babies in.

I would recommend that you find a wildlife rehabber for the baby rabbits. They are extremely delicate little creatures…also cat bites and saliva are very fatal to baby rabbits because they contain alot of harmful bacteria.
