        [script removed]

So after many months, we have finally moved our little netherland dwarf, Carbun, with our two lionheads Keelie and Kylie in their half of the big bunny condo!  He’s been living by himself in our first bunny cage, and although he gets along well enough with the “twins” when they’re all outside, he panics when they get  near him.  We’ve tried introducing him into the twins’ condo and usually he’ll run and hide and the fur will fly.  Although it started out with the twins (mostly Keelie) picking on him, most of the time it’s him just running off.

We’ve been introducing Carbun to the twins’ condo by having him spend more and more time in there with the door closed, and moving his sleeping box, food dish, and water dish into the ground floor of the condo (4 floors tall).  After a while Carbun got used to the situation, and haviing his sleeping box gave Carbun a place where he could retreat as the twins are each too big to enter that.

Once Carbun started to look more relaxed we decided to leave him in overnight.  He’s taken to staying to the first two floors and won’t approach the top two where the twins tend to be, but he has his own separate food and water and hay on the ground floor, and we’re hoping that eventually we can consolidate all that in one place.  But now it’s one less cage to clean!

That all sounds like progress. My first impression is that he is a bit overwhelmed by twin, bonded bunnies. Have you tried bonding him with each of the twins separately? I think if he can get a relationship started with them one at a time, they won’t present such a scary front when they’re together. You would also see the dynamics, since one twin might take to him and protect him if the other doesn’t. I am concerned about their being together overnight unsupervised while you sleep in case of a fight, but it does sound like you’ve progressed past that stage.

Oh, sorry Scooter & Annette. I didn’t realize it was you. You are very experienced with bonding so you know what’s good timing. (I will want your advice if I ever bond my diva.)

Hoping for the best and this is a sign of a harmonious threesome!

Scooter, I am interested to know if you changed the condo at all before moving in Carbun. Were your twins territorial about it?

No we didn’t change the condo at all. The truth is that the twins are pretty grumpy and don’t really like other buns very much. I’m not even sure they really like each other as much as they’re just used to each other. They were part of a big batch of buns rescued from a hoarder, the humane society had to double up the buns in cages because they didn’t have enough and then ran a “me and my shadow” sale – adopt one and get the cagemate for free – which is how we ended up with both of them. Any time we’ve tried to bond them with other buns or introduce them to other buns (Bailey, Aeryn, Tegan or Reno) it hasn’t gone well. That’s how Reno’s ear ended up with a rip/hole in it, and that was in new/neutral territory.

We’ve tried drives in the car, in a crate on top of the dryer, the bathroom, all kinds of things. It doesn’t make any difference with them. So we figured we’d just go with the condo as-is since changing it was likely to make them even grumpier.

Tonight Keelie and Carbun were eating their carrot “together”. Okay he was in his sleeping box with his head poking out and she was right outside it, but they were only about 3 inches apart and they were both eating, so I think that’s definitely a good sign.
              – Annette

Awesome!!! Keep us posted on how they do! It’ll be great that they can all be together.
